I know at these times, nothing really helps except time.
Other than rainbow bridge, which is the only thing I have seen that at least makes a small dent in the pain, what has someone said to you or you said to someone that at least made a small dent?

There is nothing you can say. I lost my dog right around the time that one of my best friends lost her cat so we would tell each other they were up in heaven chasing each other, as they had done in real life. That helped a little but to most people losing an animal is akin to losing family and there really isnt anything you can say to ease that.

After my dog died my sister sent me a card with a picture of a night sky with a constellation outlining a dog shape and inside it said "Heaven is a little brighter"
I think the best thing you can do is acknowledge their loss in a manner that is congruent with their feelings. If they thought of their pet as a family member, then treat their loss accordingly. I know that putting my cat and dog down this year was one of the worst memories of life I have over 29 years. Some may say it is dramatic but they were both a huge part of my life. More so than any other human being to date.

Some very nice (surprisingly nice considering the ACF crowd) comments here.
Its tough, it's hard to say something that isn't the standard "He's in a better place", "He's not suffering anymore", "You did the right thing", ect.. While those may be true there's really nothing, save maybe time, that helps heal the kind of hole that's missing in your life.
Sometimes that hole stays open and never closes. You'll love a new pet but that won't take the place of your old pal. The new pet will rise in stature in your life to equal that of your lost one, but not the "same". There's just ONE of each pet you have.

I still get sad when I think too hard about my first dog dying 6 years ago. And the fact that I wasn't even in the country when it happened, I wasn't able to be with him when he was euthanized. (Enlarged heart, edema in his lungs, he wasn't coming back from it at 10 years of age.)
It feels empty giving condolences when a human dies, as well as a pet... I always wish there was something I could actually say that WOULD make someone feel better, but I know there really isn't.
