a $200 sewing machine is a POS. Amateur machines can be thousands and thousands of dollars... more than I'd ever be able to justify spending, that's for sure... but point being, if you had to sell a sewing machine you had that was worth over $200, you'd pretty much be selling any machine you had that worked.

there has been an attack on homemaker type skills for many years. Many crafts have just started recovering from the abuse they suffered in the 70's and 80's.

There is nothing wrong with a sewing machine. It continuously jabs a needle down with thread on it. It's there to sew things.

That doesn't cost that much. I don't really get what jezza was arguing anyway, but regular person sewing machines are not thousands of dollars and are certainly under $200.

Just because you CAN get a machine for under $200 at Walmart, doesn't mean you should. I find it amazingly funny that someone who doesn't sew thinks they know about regular person sewing machines.

You can sew with your fingers ffs. This is saying you can keep something that costs a bit more than something that sews insanely fast compared to your fingers, if you file for bankruptcy.

2 swine! jesus. You get like a day of bacon out of that.

A lot of people start out with a $100 sewing machine from Wal-Mart. They're not the greatest machines on the planet but there's nothing wrong with that if that's what you can afford and/or you don't know if you will want to stick with the hobby.

I love to sew. Being only 5 feet tall it's nearly impossible to find clothes that fit me, so I have to either alter them or make my own. Even when I do rarely find stuff that fits it's usually a hideous color or pattern. I'd much rather choose and make my own. I have four machines. They were my present for graduating college.

1. An antique, refurbished Singer that weighs about a gazillion pounds and only does straight stitches and I think maybe zigzags too (haven't tried that so I can't remember for sure). I use it for sewing really heavy duty stuff like leathers and upholstery and things I don't want to run through my expensive, less heavy-duty machine. Cost me about $400, including the special table it sits in.

2. A computerized sewing machine that has about a gazillion stitches and other computerized options that, while not strictly necessary, make sewing MUCH MUCH easier. Cost $1000.

3. An embroidery machine that does only that. Cost $1000. Am currently using it to make a quilt.

4. A serger- not a coverstitch (would love one!) but will do 2-4 threads of various serger stitches. When you look at your ready-to-wear garments, the seams are usually sewn and/or finished with either a serger or a coverstitch machine. The machine has a knife to slice the fabric's edge to just the right point before it's encased in the thread stitches. (For ticky's benefit)

That list is funny though. When on earth was that written up? $200 of books? $3000 of furniture? Geez that's like- less than 2 dozen books and if we only got to keep that much furniture we would have exactly one bed and our dining table/chairs.

if you guys want sewing machines those japanese industrial ones in nyc used is about 500 bucks. but uses 220v converting it would cost another like 50 bucks. I mom brought one. there still a garment industry here in nyc tongue .

so when a small one goes under those juki industrial ones are 500 bucks. they are excellent machines.
