Subject: Big City VS Small Town... pros and cons:
I live in a small town.. out in the sticks

sometimes I wish I lived in a big city:

You can get any kind of food delivered to your home.
We have 1 pizza place that does.. it's decent, but only one

public transpo. I could justify buying a kindle and just sit back and enjoy the self time. I wouldn't have to worry about ahole drivers (especially up here in RI/Mass)

also, tied in with that... I could go get drunk at a bar if I wanted and just take a cab, or the bus home. Without a driver here, that is impossible. I have to drive my ass home.. so I always have to be careful if I am driving (which is most/all of the time if I’m not with the wife)

also, I would imagine you don't have a long commute if you live in a big city

oh, and a gallon of milk would be a short walk away, not a 20 minute ride

what else is great about living in a big city??

Why I love living in a small town:

I will actually own the house I live in

Everyone does know everyone. we are a community, and we look out for each other , and we like each other. I would imagine that is very hard in a big city

I can turn my music up as loud as I want if nobody is home. nobody to complain about it.

when there is a snow storm, I can park my car wherever I want.

On a nice summer night, you can go outside and hear the crickets, and the frogs and such.. so tranquil.. so peaceful. have a beer and relax and enjoy the silence.. I will do this for hours sometimes

My Mother is 2 doors down from me, and my brother is 3. My grandparents lived across the street, and my aunt lived next door.. my brother in law lives down the street about a 4 minute ride

I don't know.. I can see pros and cons to each

what do you prefer?? what do you have? do you like it, or would you like the other??

We are about ideal right now. about 30 miles outside of Minneapolis, and once you get out of the ring of burbs around the Cities you are either in farm country or the woods, town of about 4K and we dont actually live in town. Our town has a grocery store, hardware store and a couple places to eat. We pretty much are close enough to the big cities to not be too inconvenienced, and far enough away to not have any of the downside of the big cities.

Pros of a small town:
- same-day service at the vet (provided it was for the dog and not the bird).
- same with oil changes and seasonal tire changes
- can walk to and from work

I'm afraid my list of pros for big city is much longer and I am too lazy to type it all out. Suffice to say, I miss living in the city.

I rather enjoy living where I do. About 20 miles out of two large cities, we're far enough out that we have forested areas, close enough to have most amenities of a large city.

we have fair public transport, but it's rather expensive.

Thats another nice thing about here, we have really good public transit and it costs me nothing. Have to drive like 20 minutes to get to it but still.

This is why I moved to Lemon Grove, just outside San Diego, got horses right up the street from me, roads with no curbs and few street lights, quiet neighborhoods, etc. It is still really more city than town though. I'd love to live somewhere truly rural with a decent chunk of land but not sure if I could live without the amenities I am so used to having always lived around a decent sized city.

I have the best of both. I'm in a city, but in a closed neighbourhood. I know most of my neighbours (60 houses) and have a public transit hub two blocks away. Grocery, pizza, and a crappy Walmart are quicker to get to on foot than by car. I'm 15 minutes from the downtown core by public transit as I'm on the main line (our version of the subway essentially, though it is buses.) and 20 mins from downtown by car.

This was the biggest change for me moving from the city to out here. We have zero street lights. When its dark, its dark. It was also a tad spooky how quiet it is at first, it will be dead quiet and you will hear a owl hoot or something and it sounds like its right on top of you.

Big city. I grew up in Minneapolis and have missed living in a city that size since. London, Ontario was pretty nice because it had a decent public transit system. Where I live now leaves a lot to be desired.

I looooooooooove Toronto. It glitters and always makes me giddy and excited to walk downtown.

I lived in big cities most of my life. NYC and Chicago for the most part.

Now I live in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere.

It's fricken scary at times. Nothing to do, no where to go do it, inbred, drug addicted, idiots for neighbors, all the kids (I mean ALL) are addicted to Rx drugs, all their parents are addicted to meth and Rx drugs, the cops are fatter, the dogs smell worse, everyone drives like me, it's the worst of both worlds. None of the amenities of a city, none of the seclusion and nature of living on a farm.

It's like a few thousand idiots got together and said, "Let's make a tiny, boring, more stupid version of a city with all the hassle and none of the fun".

It is cheap as hell to live here however, and if you can afford to buy milk and bread on the same day....you are in the top 1% of income in the region which means I'm sorta like a weird assed, scary, rock star of sorts. Which has it's benefits.

I was born and raised in a suburb of New Orleans, moved about an hour away 10 years ago and haven't looked back. We have a mid size city 20 mins away so they big town comforts are close enough. We sold the our house on our tiny yard and bought a bigger house on alot more property for not much more here. Now I can ride my 4- wheeler to my woods and hunt squirrels, rabbits and hogs. Even seen a few deer in there. Oh and the fishing is great here too.

ROFL.

When I lived in Chicago I was 26 miles from work.

Here in Iowa that means a 24 minute drive to work from my garage to my parking spot.

In chicago that meant a 1 hour and 15 minute drive that entailed 28 minutes of sitting in red lights and crossing 17 railroad tracks hoping to christ a train wasn't running that morning.

I've lived in a big city for most of my life and wouldn't trade it for anything.

However, if society ever breaks down (nuclear war, plague, zombies), I am screwed.

burbs is where it's at.

I'm outside Memphis...so even if I were in the city, it's still not such a huge city that I'd feel cramped...although I would never want to live in downtown Memphis.

I have some family that live in the burbs of Chicago, and I could do that...They live in a neighborhood not much different than mine, and are a 5-10 minute drive from the train and about a 20-25 minute train ride to Chicago. I would really like that, and I may have to find something like that eventually given my epilepsy (1 seizure and I'm not supposed to drive for 6 months...hard to do stuff when you live 30 minutes + from work).

I'm pretty introverted though out in public if I am alone, so big cities aren't a lot of fun for me if I'm walking around by myself.

I can see the attractiveness of city living. If I didn't have a child, I'd consider it. That said, I live in a small town that's got a nice historic downtown area full of non-chain shops and restaurants, and I'm only about 30 minutes north of Boston. Another 30 minutes north gets me real rural living in the empty parts of NH, so it's not a bad place to be.

never lived in a small town, for most my life i would of had to drive at least hour just to get out of the city. always thought it might be nice to live in a small city in montana or something, but i think i would get tired of seeing the same people all the time. i couldn't handle everyone knowing my business

we have fair public transport, but it's rather expensive.

Thats another nice thing about here, we have really good public transit and it costs me nothing. Have to drive like 20 minutes to get to it but still.

There are lots of jobs downtown that pay people's passes to use public transit instead of parking in the city. If I worked downtown I certainly would use the train, its only about a 10 minute drive for me to get to. The big temp agencies give you bus/train passes as well, regardless of where you work, but often the route from home to work means 2-3 bus routes and 2-3 times the time.

i love the dart here in dallas

fast, clean, not too many fights or killings ;P

stops right by one courthouse so if you have jury duty, you can ride it in to downtown. takes you to the zoo, and the fair.

wish it would take you to cowboy stadium and ranger stadium. that would be nice.

I live in a town of a little over 3k people and work 50 miles away in a town of 100k people. I enjoy country life and only live 1/2 mile out of 'town' where there's a Wal-Mart, A&W, Long John Silver's, McD's and KFC so it's not that little. The interstate runs through town and there's an Army base 9 miles from town so there are plenty of transient people around as well to keep all the stores subsidized.

I enjoy the quiet and being able to take walks around my house and see deer and sand hill cranes out in the fields. The dog occasionally gets too involved with a skunk or porcupine but that's only a small downside to living here.

I was born and raised 40 miles south of Chicago and I don't miss it at all. Before I moved to Wisconsin, I had an 11 mile commute to work which took me 45 minutes to an hour. Now I drive 50 miles in 50 minutes to get to work and the 'rush hour' is laughingly called the 'rush minute' here.

I'll take small town/boonies any day.

When my wife first moved to my last house in NH, the first thing she commented on how loud the night noises were. Then the next day she was looking for me and found me outside at the mailbox, in just my boxers shaving. She was horrified being a city girl. She said "what are you doing outside in your underwear"?

I told her to look around, who's gonna see me? The beaver that lives 15 feet behind my house?

I live in the suburbs now, back in Mass, and I feel cramped only having 1/2 acre. But with me working in Boston and having twins, the move was inevitable. I do want to move back at some point. I find MA completely retarded. You can't order online and have shipped to your house any kind of legal knife, axe, ammo etc.. all of these things are legal to be shipped to your house in NH. It just makes no sense.

About 75k here and I really like it.
5 minute (or less) drive to work
The bar that I mainly go to is a 30 second walk from my place
The grocery store is about a 10 minute drive (or less)
Unless it's a holiday I usually wait a max of 10 minutes for a cab
It has a bit of a small town feel since a lot of people know each other but I don't know everyone in the city
About an hour drive to a city with over 350k (aka bigger and better bars)
Multiple other big cities within a few hours drive
15 minute drive to get to the bridge (going to Michigan)
It's a drinkers town...

con: It's an industrial city so if you're not from here you would smell it.

Heh...

Lived in a small town for the first 18 years of my life. The minute I turned 18, I tucked tail and high-tailed it out for the big city.

I LOVE big cities. My brother & his wife, and mother prefer the small town. I can't stand small towns, too little to do.

When I went back for my first visit after I left... 8 years later or so... it had transformed from a small town to a whatever-the-next-notch-up-is town having chain stores like Best Buy, Costco, Wal-Mart, and etc... I was surprised at the change...

Brandun - I'm sorry for you having your family next to you. I cannot have my mother living next to me. I would rather commit suicide than letting her. I applaud you for having the cajones.
