Oh, sure, sometimes it can be fun and all. The pictures in particular  , but damn....can't anyone ever pick up a phone and call anymore?
I got 247 texts in the last 3 days, outside of a couple of very nice pictures...about the only thing all that texting said was, "Hi, whatcha doing" and "Yeah, me too".

Haha! Pictures aside, texting has saved me so much time and irritation over the past few years, it's hard to complain.
In its proper place, I think texting is outstanding. It has vastly simplified certain things like picking up milk on the way home from work or whatnot. It also provides a record for people who like to pretend that you or they said something that you or they did not.

maybe they don't have enough to say for a full conversation so it's pointless to call and talk
or maybe they hate talking on the phone as i do...it is hands down one of the worst communication methods ever IMO
or maybe its because cell phone companies charge ridiculous rates for phone calls and people don't want to use their limited minutes...while unlimited texts are still cheap

Nowadays people dictate the message to their phone which sends it as a text that is then read to the recipient by their phone. This is like the future.

Having a cell phone means you have a big cell phone bill. My niece has a $100 a month bill. It makes me shake my head every month. My kids wanted me to pay for their phone bills. I laughed at them. I already do pay for it. There is a phone in the house they can use at anytime.

FWIW Tych, my cell bill is $40/month and we don't have a land line, but I am just slightly less of a dinosaur than you are because I don't have a smart phone, just a regular old dumb phone.

Unlimited text/talk/web is 35 bucks a month. Cheaper than having a home phone. If people pay more than that, it's their problem.
I was just going thru deleting some of my texts, cause the in box was full, and a quick glance at each showed that the vast majority of them consisted of 5 words or less. I'm gonna write down the first 10 of them to show you.

Yeah, I had this conversation with a friend a few weeks ago actually. Her 13 year old son was bitching that he wanted a smart phone or a NEW smart phone or somesuch. I made some smartass remark to him about how he should figure out a way to come up with the $80/month to pay for it and then he could have it. His mother was quick to jump in and tell me how it wouldn't cost that much for his, but would be in the $40/month category. I then got into a conversation with her about it. Her and her husband's phones would go from like $90 to $120/month each if they got the expanded data plan they would need to cover their kid's phone, which would only cost $40 extra a month...

I bought my phone, a crappy "smartphone" LG Optimus for 30 bucks. 3 bucks for a new SIM card and I was good to go. As said above, I pay 35 bucks a month for service unlimited everything, no contract.
Seems to work fine to me.
Don't get me wrong on the text thing, I'm glad people actually want to get in touch with me, I just haven't had a phone call in weeks. It's all text all the time. Sometimes it's nice to hear the voice ya know?

I dont even know why I have a cell phone. I rarely turn it on and only use it for emergencies. Yet, my cell phone bill is quite high, because my youngest sons cell features are top of the line. I have unlimited texting. But , I get few texts because they know my phone is turned off.

If I was in a city of any size that would be true.
I live in bumfark nowhere however, and all the women over 40, let alone 50, are either married or so evil/ugly/stupid/crack addicted/whatever that no one...not even the drunk, unemployed losers that the good looking women have to settle for will go near them.
Closest I got was 38, plain as a nun but seemed nice enough, if a little stupid....and found out after 2 dates that she lost her kids to the state for being addicted to meth a few years ago. Pass.

I do not have texting on my phone. I text using Google Voice. It's basically just like really short email to me.
I don't like being interrupted during the day. I leave my phone on silent and I don't get texts until I'm ready to check them. I get a lot more done* that way.
(* on the days when I'm not wasting time on the outpost)
