We went to AVS Forums and looked at the professional calibration numbers. We also discovered that we could enable THX by programming our harmony remote to the service remote settings happy

I used this, but I didn't pay $85 for it. Quite a few people say the Disney Disc is good too.

Just getting the numbers off AVS Forums may not be the best option, since each room is different and since most people don't have rooms set up properly for THX, using those settings isn't necessarily going to get you the best picture either.

I've had a disc for forever that has all the test images. Five minutes with that thing makes a world of difference. For audio my receiver has a test mic that you plugin and put where you sit then activate a test program and it calibrates itself. Loud and annoying but worth it once it finishes up, lol.

I did using this site.

I only have an older DLP, but if your model is listed there it is the cheapest way.

I have used movies that I already own that include THX optimization tools on the disc. However, on some TV's, the picture is slightly different on the different available inputs, so you may need slightly different calibration numbers for your STB versus your DVD/BR player vs. your game system.

I never understood why the cable providers don't have HD-calibration available on demand, so you can accurately calibrate your TV using the signals the box is putting out.

Oh yes, especially with the newer LEDs, they crank up the brightness at the factory so out of the box they pop across the store and catch your eye, ala bestbuy. You can get a lot more depth and better picture/color with proper adjustments and in some case conserve energy and the bulbs at the same time.

Plus not fine tuning them from the factory allows a whole new industry of overpriced tv tuners for bestbuy and such.

oh best buy loves to push their tuning service...

I think you can pretty much look this stuff up on the internet and do it yourself though. Different people prefer different settings so there's no such thing as one universal setting that will look good for everyone. But when I bought my TV I looked up recommended setting on the internet and just went into the menu and changed them myself.

Hehe, I love the test mic thing. So much better than my old one where I had to measure and key in the distances to each speaker.

I have a Laserdisc version of the video calibration thing. Not a DVD, the old LP sized laserdisc. Sadly my LD player popped something inside and I never bothered fixing it.

Quite a few of the newer TV's can do BTB (Blacker than Black) and the test discs are set up to allow you to calibrate for that. The best way to do it is use the disc in the player you will be using to watch movies.

Neat Calibration site, but they don't have my TV on their lists, of TV's that have been professionally calibrated. Even though it's a couple of years old
