A deeper investigation reveals that this was a pathetic attempt by progressive edu-crats at something they have labeled "cross-curricular". That is, they took something the kids were supposed to be studying in social studies (slavery, etc.) and insert it into their math problems.

I think they could have made the questions more culturally relevent.
