I could use some tips for slipping my brain into neutral, as it were. Trying to clear my mind is proving to be one of the hardest things i've ever had to do. Basically im trying to learn to be more centered, to stay in the present instead of worrying about the past or the future. And there are a couple of other areas of my life that could benefit from my being a little more balanced and centered. So, any tips?

I think breathing has a lot to do with it. Breath through nose out mouth and concentrate on that but honestly I dont know.

Try yoga. I had an instructor back in NY that would occasionally lead meditation after the poses, though in truth you get the same centering and quieting of your mind as you focus on your body and breathing. I've been practicing fairly regularly for the last 4-5 years, and it's the best way for me to relax and shut my brain off.

I always have to meditate after talking to you. putting yourself into a sub-trance state is pretty easy. while laying or sitting relaxed, reclined is best for me, just start relaxing your muscles starting in your toes, and slowly working your way up your body, while breathing slowly and deeply in through the nose, out through the mouth. Enya or Tangerine Dream will help, I especially like the Optical Race album.

Fourth Method: Meditation on the Void "All substances are part of my own consciousness. This consciousness is vacuous, unborn, and unceasing." Thus meditating, Allow the mind to rest in the uncreated state. Like the pouring of water into water, The mind should be allowed its own easy mental posture In its natural, unmodified condition, clear and vibrant. By maintaining this relaxed, uncreated state of mind Rebirth into routine game-reality is sure to be prevented. Meditate on this until you are certainly free. http://deoxy.org/psyexp.htm

I would think that would be better... no local cops going to be busting ya on a military base and since you're not in the military the MPs couldn't bother ya either, I'd think... and as for the mental issues, it might help

My husband gets in trouble if it's in the house, basically because he knew about it (and even if he didnt, they're not likely to believe that) and didnt turn it (and me) over to the police. Theoretically, if i wanted to i could go to a friend's house and smoke there, as long as i didnt bring any back with me. I've often wondered if it would help my mental issues, i smoked a couple of times and ate a funny brownie (actually it was a funny scoop of Ben 'n' Jerrys, but the outcome is the same) once and i found that although it was great when i was high, the paranoia when i came down was awful, given that one of my major symptoms is paranoia. It just made it that much worse. EDIT: Cheers Kanga, i'll take a look at that

I've always been taught to start at your head and work down with progressive muscle relaxation techniques. It also helps to tighten each muscle first, then relax to feel the difference between any " baseline" tension you may be carrying.

it probably doesn't matter where you start, as long as you pick a spot and go with it, and get fully relaxed.

I practice holistic breathing exercises. Like suntzukali said, I breathe in through the nose, and out through the mouth. I concentrate on using different muscles in different areas to control my breathing, like upper chest, middle abdomen (mostly diaphragm), and lower abdomen (way down right about the pelvis). It's really hard to isolate the muscles, but it can be done with practice and the results are like a natural high.

Honestly, don't listen to anyone.
All it really takes is trial and error. Nothing anyone tells you to try will work until you discover it for yourself.
Focus on simplicity and keep trying until you find something that works for yourself.
You will find it if you look within yourself.
Have patience. It won't come just because you want it to.
