I would pick it up and return it to him.

the only time I didn't return money when I knew who the owner was, was one time at home depot. I was waiting in line at the self checkout, and these two dude cut right in front of me, all in a hurry, the one rings his crap up and he does a debit withdrawal while he's there. They're talking to each other the whole time and when the cash comes out, he doesn't even look and just grabs a handful and leaves. But he missed 20 bucks so I grabbed it. I saw him in the parking lot and as I walked by, I waved and said "thanks for lunch today". He just looked at me kinda dumbfounded, but I'm sure he figured it out later.

Pick it up and return it to him, like I've actually done probably a half a dozen times in the past few years when I've seen people drop money, or phones or similar items of value that I could have picked up and taken with no repercussions whatsoever.

It depends on how much money. The greater the amount of money, the more I would have to deliberate. I have returned many things of value.

If he is using a money clip I would be doing him a favor by keeping it.

I almost think the inverse would be true for me.

99.999% of the time I prolly wouldn't even think twice and just return it. The greater the amount the more likely I wouldn't think twice about it... But if it's only 5 or ten bucks and I gotta run to catch up to the dude or walk across a store/street to give it back I'd prolly just say eff it and keep it or not even pick it up to begin with.

The last time I bought tennis shoes at a shoe store while I was paying for them a $100 bill dropped out of my pocket. I didn't even notice. I was just getting into my car when a shoe store customer ran out tapped on my car window and handed me back my money.

Thank you Outpost, but you cut it pretty close. hugs

Honestly, it completely depends on who dropped it and it would take a moment of hard scrutiny to make a decision.

Is the person old, not well dressed, any sign of someone struggling to get by? Then it doesn't matter what the amount is, I would return it.

Is the person well dressed? What are they driving? If their shoes are nicer than mine I am keeping the money.

Does their car have an Obama sticker? Then I am gonna come up behind and club them and take whatever else they didn't drop.

Yeah I've had a weird instances with this.

When I lived in Florida a neighbors package was delivered to my house by mistake. We get a lot of deliveries so I didn't look at the name or address and opened it, I couldn't figure out wtf I had transistors to fix some POS stereo equipment sent to my house. After looking like an A-hole and calling the company that delivered it I figured out that the numbers were switched and took it over to his house. Which led to a confrontation.

I knock politely. I hear his kid yell, "Dad it's some white guy at the door."
Great he's racist. This guy (who has introduced himself as a preacher to me previously) looks at me like I'm the police and I explain to him the mix-up. I expected him to say thank you yeah this happens, instead I could see his face light up with anger, he couldn't wait to lecture me on how illegal it was to open someone else's mail. I interrupted him midway through his talk down session letting him know we had to do an inventory for his stuff. I lied to him when I said I took photo's of the invoice and the items in case he felt the need to pursue this further.

Altra is right, don't touch their crap.

The reverse just happened to me actually. I ordered a receiver and UPS delivered it to my next door neighbor. I called up UPS and then NewEgg and got a call on Monday from the neighbor. I assumed UPS got in contact with him and he called me. Only when I got the package home did I realize my phone number was on it, and since the box was unopened I now assume he took it upon himself to get in contact with me. I think I'm going to leave him a thank you note, if nothing else, he restored a little bit of my faith in humanity.

I shout, POINT, and tell him he dropped it. I've done that a couple times.

In my city, I'm not gonna be seen in motion with someone else's wallet/clip in my hand and have someone get the wrong idea.

edit -- I just scrolled up and see Altra responded about the same way. Yeah, I'm not touching other peoples' stuff around here.

I'll pick it up and put as little effort in to returning it as possible before giving up. But I will at least attempt to return it.

Edit: I thought I should clarify. This response isn't because I'd want to keep the money. It's because I'm extremely lazy.

I'd catch him and offer it.

If he didn't start thanking me profusely and/or offer a reward, I'd follow his sorry ass home and set his car on fire.

I fished a wallet out of a public toilet once. Still had ID and pictures, but no cash. Clerk said a guy was just looking for one. I stepped outside, found the guy, who starts screaming and accusing me of stealing his "whole paycheck". I threw it down a storm drain and walked away.

In almost all circumstances, I'd return it. I can imagine circumstances where I wouldn't though. If I had a reason to think negatively of him I might not. I've given cash to people who've dropped it before, at least 1 wallet that I can remember as well.

This is easy. I've done it countless times when given too much change or whatever.

I was eating lunch in a place where there is like a "court" and a bunch of walk up kiosks, and when I sat down there was a purse on the ground in front of me. I started walking to the counter and the guido making pizza was like, "Oh it must have been that lady she just walked out you might catch her." So I ran it out to her, and she snatched it out of my hand without a thank you and looked through it all thoroughly right in front of me.

My buddy told me I should have thrown it away, and I was like "Why? I have to live with what I do, she will be a lousy person forever." I don't even regret giving that nasty bitch her purse back.

If I saw him drop it I'd get his attention, or pick it up and give it to him.

If I found a money clip and I couldn't readily identify who it belonged to I'd keep it.

In high school.. There was this dumbass kid that i didnt like and being the dumbass he is, he left his duffelbag with all of his stuff in it in the locker room.. I knew it was his, so my friend i went through his stuff and found his wallet. He had $16 in it, we took 14 and let him keep 2(we were nice guys) - then we walked across the street bought some pizza and used the rest to play street fighter. I have never felt remorse for doing that.

Subject: You see a lone man on the street unknowingly drop a clip of money from his pocket
as a side note, i would expect nothing less from anyone who sees me drop cash on the ground.
i would just assume i spent it in a bar anyway and not even think twice about missing money

If you see a person drop their money right in front of you then you just tell them about it.. Common sense. I wouldnt expect anyone to come search for me if i lost cash.

And you cant give it to an attendant or worker with the hope theyll give it to the rightful owner - the worker will pocket it.
