Does your sleep suffer when you lose weight? If I am maintaining my weight or gaining my head might hit the pillow 5 seconds before I fall asleep. If I am losing weight I can't sleep well at all. I lay in bed a long time before I drop off. I did this 30 years ago too but just really made the connection this past year.

I know. I'm sure my metabolism changes, but they say to lose weight you should sleep more. I work hard to get 5 hours sleep. I already have a bad back and both shoulders are bad. I know that's against me too. I would love to sleep more. My mind will not allow the alarm clock to go off. My subconscious is afraid my wife's sleep will suffer with her health conditions.

I also notice I am sleepy after I eat. A good friend of mine will only eat once a day because it makes him sleepy too. He eats right before he goes to bed. He's also my age and is a perfect weight. Maybe he's on to something.

So 34 years ago I stopped smoking, joined the gym, and started serious weight loss. Three pounds a week. And I got stronger, massively stronger. I was working out hard 4 days a week on advanced bodybuilding routines and occasionally a power lifting routine. I went from benching 135 for 3 sets of 8 to benching 305 for 3 sets of 8. And my sleep suffered. I attributed it to the gym.

Now, and last spring, my sleep is suffering from weight loss. Last spring I just figured it was the stroke. Then in the summer and fall I just maintained my weight and slept better again. I figured I was just recovering more from the stroke and sleeping like normal again. Now I'm losing weight again and not working out at all and my sleep once again is suffering. Last year it was pretty common for me to lay in bed an hour then get up for an hour then go back to bed and fall asleep.

So since the Christmas break is over I am once again eating to lose weight, which I am, and I notice my sleep is exactly the same. So I'm made the connection that my weight loss is what's making my sleep suffer. And I know they say to lose weight you need more sleep. And I don't want to use chemical sleep aids. I'll see my doc again next month and let him know what's up. I do have a CPAP machine and he knows it. He may just shrug it off and say get what sleep I can.

And as for the sporadic dieting. It seems I can only stay focused for 3 or 4 months then I need a break from the dieting before I launch my self back into it. I don't think that's bad though as long as I don't regain weight. And my BP is down in the safe zone. I think it's more healthy for my mental state to do this. When I worked out hard I had one cheat day a week and still lost 3 pounds a week. I don't think I can do that with not going to the gym for 16 hours a week now. And I don't want too lose 3 pounds a week if I'm not working out hard. I want to lose more fat than muscle.

I also can't do the 5 or 6 small meals a day. I've talked to my doc about that and he says you can throw all that crap out the window. At the end of the day (a perfect place for this saying) your body doesn't care what you ate when. You just need to do whatever works for you. If you can do several small meals fine. If you can't, don't eat as often. I fit into the last category. Once I start eating I want to continue. In my youth I never at before noon. Now that I'm not a severe diabetic I can do this again.

Sexy!

I will throw my amateur opinion in, I would never recommend or do the eat once a day and it is usually always bad to eat right before bed, it goes straight to fat. Your friend, and many others, may be blessed with genetic high metabolisms and can get away with that. It does not sound like you have that gift. I know I don't.

Have you tried melatonin(sp?) or other mild sleep aids. The walmart equate sleep aids work great for me.

Eating before you go to bed is usually considered a no-no.

Perhaps you are eating too many carbs for dinner? You end up carb crashing later.

Yay, im not the only one who does this!! I've been accused of being "weak willed" and "not committed to weight loss" because sometimes i just need a damn BREAK. Im not saying i go out and start stuffing my face with cheeseburgers and cake, i just dont watch every calorie. And i maintain the weight at whatever level it was until im ready to get going again.

Right now im taking a new approach. Some crap happened last year that really upset me, and when i get upset my appetite goes to pot. I was literally forcing down (and i do mean forcing, i'd be fighting the urge to puke with every mouthful) 2 small meals a day, and that was only because i have to eat twice a day for my meds. Anyway, it's shrunk my stomach considerably so that where before i was eating less and still feeling hungry, now im full after half a sandwich. So now that's what im doing. Eating healthy foods, but eating really slow and stopping the instant i feel full, and saving the rest for another time. Since all this started at the end of last year, i've lost about 7lbs (i maintained for a bit over christmas and didnt really lose much because of all the party food flying about), and if i keep this up i think i stand in good stead to lose more.

I'm the same sooz. Most people eat more when depressed. When I'm down I won't eat anything. If I was a truck driver I would also be skinny. I don't get hungry when I am driving for some reason. Over the break I probably picked 5 or so pounds up, but I've lost that already and actually feel good again. Now I want to push on down below 250. I do need to get back to the gym though, but my back needs to feel better and bowl week needs to be over.

Actually, people who are clinically depressed tend to eat less than normal. Anxiety/panic issues cause weight gain.

In general your body tries to not lose weight, so it could indicate your body is more stressed, or ill. Maybe you are losing weight too fast, and need to eat more.

If you can't sleep because of exercise, perhaps it's because the exercise made your mind/body more alert, so you are more aware of aches or other stressful stimuli. Idk... generally exercise helps people relax.

You say your sleep is suffering but what exactly do you mean by that?

Just that you have a hard time falling asleep?
When you do fall asleep, are you just sleeping less but with no ill effects during the day? Or is it affecting your daytime patterns/etc as well? Are you more irritable, etc.
Is your sleep itself less effective/lower quality?- i.e. you sleep but you toss and turn and/or don't feel well rested when you wake.

If it's just that you're sleeping less hours and taking longer to get to sleep, but nothing else- frankly I wouldn't worry about it. That's just me though.

I've always been one that has to lay in bed for a good half hour or so at least before being able to fall asleep. Always been that way. I have to be really tired- like falling asleep on my feet- in order for me to fall asleep within minutes of laying down. That happens maybe twice a year. My husband's head hits the pillow and he's snoring within 5 minutes. I envy the bastard!

My sleep became easier as I lost weight. It was better quality sleep and I snored somewhat less.

Anymore, being down to 222lbs, I'm finding myself having a hard time falling asleep. Mostly because I'm too damn hyperactive and energetic. Seems the less I weigh, the higher my metabolism. =/

Start at a low dose (i think 1mg is the lowest you can get) and work up. Dont do what i did and accidentally start at 10mg, because your body will get used to it and make the lower doses not work for you.

When I was working out regularly, my sleep was great. It seemed much easier to maintain circadian rhythm for some reason. I got tired around 10pm and woke up feeling great in the morning.

Why the hell did I stop anyway?

I have a fullproof weight loss plan that I implement regularly. I go a week without drinking beer.

Bam.. instant 5-10lbs gone.

Mangler had an accident on the way home from the liquor store. He was run off the road and crashed into a woman's clinic. It was one giant Pabst smear.

are you cutting out carbs to lose weight?

this would be explained by the lack of seratonin being produced as a result. try melatonin, man up, or something.

edit: i looked and you haven't really posted any insight into your diet, schedule, etc. can't tell anything about a problem without some knowledge of it.

if im tired, i usually had something high carb. the carb/protein ratio is off on that meal.

I lost 40 lbs last year, but that was from some toxic meds I was on that made me sick all the time. And I didn't sleep well either.

I sleep significantly better when I am working out regularly. Everyone is different I guess.
