We've secretly replaced the 15th ranked Clemson Tigers with a peewee team from Muncy, Indiana.  Let's see if anyone notices...

this and the crazy baylor win is just 2 reasons why there needs to be a play-off system.

while LSU and the Tide have awesome defenses they wouldnt be able to shutdown a team with a high powered offense when it starts clicking.

like they say in the nfl "any given Sunday"

Uh...that's exactly what awesome defenses do. They shut down high powered offenses. Have you just started watching football recently?

Someone at work said was telling me about one of the ESPN highlight reels. At one point they said something along the lines of..

"and I guess we have to move on to the 4th, since there is no mercy rule in college football"

I agree with sith. Bama and LSU wouldn't be able to stop them if they started clicking. But the way LSU and bama play defense, is to prevent any sort of rhythm or flow. lol, no offense will ever "click" against those two defenses.

That's my entire point. They would never get clicking. Isn't Oregon a high powered offense? LSU shut them down.

great offense vs great defense I will put the money on the offense any day.

look at it this way a great offense doesn't have to produce points every possession but a great defense has to prevent points being scored on every possession.

any given gameday.

That's pretty stupid Sith. It's not like a switch that's either on or off. You have to look at how great. And great at what? Maybe what they're great at doesn't match up well with the opponent. You always have to look at matchups, penalty prone teams, turnover teams. There's a lot that goes into who wins in a football game. IMHO football is the most complicated team sport and no idiot can simplify it.

any given gameday any team can beat another team.

all I said is there needs to be a play-off to give these teams a chance, and the posters here are so blinded by their hate towards me that they would rather defend the BCS, so they can insult me, not surprising.

want a example look at the Seahawks win over the Saints in the play-offs last year.

and its just not me, there might be a split #1 this season especially if the Tide beat LSU, because the AP poll voters arent obligated like the coaches poll to label the bcs championship winner #1.

I know any team can beat any team, but it's not as simple as saying a great offense will beat a great defense. In fact, that comment is diametrically opposed to what most in the industry generally believe....that you need a great defense to win a championship.

You could also look at the Seahawks beating the Giants and Ravens this year and the Bears last year.

whens the last time a great defense won a championship in the pro's? the 2000 ravens.

if you have a substandard offense then yes you need a great defense, but with a high powered offense you can get away with having a substandard defense. example the Packers, well they have the worst defense in the NFL atm.

What kind of babble is that? A great offense that doesn't produce points every possession isn't a great offense, and if their defense sucks, they are going to lose the game. Look at this way. Every coach in the NFL and NCAA agrees that playing great defense is crucial to winning games. So what you're saying is you are smarter than they are.

ok then explain the Packers, and Patriots.
you people are forgetting the the rules favor offensive players now not defensive players.

Well, let's test your theory. I'd say top 5 in points against in the NFL would be a great defense.

2010 season - Green Bay, 2nd in Points against:
2008 - Steelers, 1st in points against

Sheesh man, I'm not even down to 2000 yet and I've already seen 2 great defenses that won it all out of the last 3 super bowls.

and take a look at their offensive stats too?
the year the steelers won the where 2nd in the league in yards rushing and averaged 23.3 points per game
the packers where averaging 24.2 points per game and 5th in passing

the last team that had a crap offense and a dominating defense that won was the 2000 Ravens

every other team that has won the superbowl since then that had a top ranked defense also had a offense to match.

2005 season, Steelers 3rd best D.
2004 Patriots, 2nd best
2003 Patriots, #1 defense
2002 Bucaneers, #1 defense
2001, Patriots were #6 awwww....but look who they beat, the offensive juggernaut Rams.
2000 as you indicated, the Ravens.

Well.. FFS man, that's damn near every super bowl winner since the 2000 season has had the top 3 defenses in the NFL, plus one I had to highlight that was #6 because they beat the record-breaking offense of the St. Louis Rams.

and every single team had the offense to match except the Ravens and even then they had a dominating run game.

how hard is that not to understand?

I agree that they had great defenses. is it to hard for you to agree that they had great offenses too?

told me what that every super bowl winner except for the Ravens where a complete team balanced on defense and offense.

the last team that relied on its defense to win games was the Ravens all the other teams averaged 21+ points per game.

also the best defense's still give up 10-14 points per game on average.

In points scored/points allowed(the only stats that matter)...

2000 Ravens - 14th/1st
2001 Patriots - 6th/6th
2002 Bucs - 18th/1st
2003 Patriots - 12th/1st
2004 Patriots - 4th/2nd
2005 Steelers - 9th/3rd
2006 Colts - 2nd/23rd
2007 Giants - 14th/17th
2008 Steelers - 20th/1st
2009 Saints - 1st/20th
2010 Packers 10th/2nd

6 top 10 offenses
8 top 10 defenses

I'm not sure this helps anybody, but it was irritating me that you guys were leaving out teams just to help your own case.

Wtf? how did this go from College to pros?

PS. what is it, 7 straight years the SEC has won the title game? Defense wins championships.

no recruiting wins championships in college.

Well Florida State should have won a few by now, so should Notre Dame, OH, how could I forget OSU.

Or Texas, or Oklahoma. Can't forget Oregon. All have had solid recruiting classes in the last few years, but nothing to show for it.

Don't leave out Michigan.

Did I mention Miami? With the best class in 2008. How many championships did they win?

Now, the SEC does have some strong classes coming in, but OSU has been in the top 10 for maybe 5 straight years now? (maybe more, i'd have to look it up).

By your logic, they should have at least won one recently. It really escapes me though, when was the last time they won one?
