Let some air out of your tyres, you'll get more grip
Relax the hands and arms, and keep your weight back
Make directional changes progressively and with your whole mass on the bike
Brake early and as much as possible in a straight line

I like this one best. It's already not enjoyable passing people in the snow in their cars, then you add a bike doing 10 km/h that you have to pass, all while convinced that at any second they will slide out in front of you and under your tires...

i never found snow to be a problem.
ICE on the other hand...that sucked even with studs.

OH...and a couple other useful tips...
take everything off your bike...pump, packs etc.
be prepared to open your wallet/purse.
things WILL break when you wipe out...especially plastic brackets!

Brother did that...

First time he did that... 10 minutes later, ambulance showed up and took him to the hospital. He broke his arm. So now, he doesn't bike in the winter. He sure learned his lesson tongue

Pussies, I motorcycled year round in Washington DC, thru ice storms and blizzards, on street bikes no less.

Here is the secret, manilla rope.

Get yourself some manilla rope as big (thick) as will clear your swingarm on the rear and front fender on the front.

Wrap it around the tire thru the spokes and then tie it off, kind of like the stripes on a candy cane for all you sissy lala's.

Drive with both boots on the snow or ice, apply pressure as needed to keep you upright and make the turns.

Remember you can get up a good head of speed, but turning is a bitch and stopping is problematic at best, I never tried it with studded boots, too concerned that my foot might catch something and throw me.

I commuted for three years like that, till the 12 point ticker for doing 93mph in a 30mph zone went off my record as far as jacking me for car insurance, (bike insurance was only dependent on the cc size of the bike).

It will look kind of like this, though I recommend closer rope grouping.

that's great if you have disc brakes...buuut, i dont think that is even close to being standard on bicycles yet.

PLUS, IMO disc breaks are overkill.

I cycled through two winters here.

For snow and ice I used the bike with mud tires, they did great in the snow and ok on icy patches.
Layers and vented clothing so you can manage your overheating.
If you do get sweaty you can't stop for more than a traffic light.
Warm clothing for your legs too, keep the knees warm.
Learn to enjoy icicles in your beard. Prepare to be mocked when they're all on an angle from the wind.
The car drivers don't see you in the summer, why the **** would they see you in blowing snow, assume they can't. The drivers that do see you hate your guts, even if you're obeying the laws.

In those two years I got clipped by a mirror on a pickup truck on a snowy day, he sped off. And I got swiped by an asshole in a car on a bright sunny summer day, he took off and I followed him home. (Closed subdivision and the moron lived just a few blocks away. All I did was give him a piece of my mind and laughed at the scratches all down the side of his car.)

For the record, I stop at lights and stop signs and signal just as I would in a car, I've never been one of 'those' cyclists.

One more, your bike is going to be a rusty piece of crap if you don't keep cleaning and oiling the chain and other bits. The salt and road grime will destroy all that fast.

50' is more than enough to do both tires. Don't need huge rope but you want rough rope, that is why you want manilla.

Also you got to take them off quick once you hit dry pavement.
