We've replaced the subfloor. The walls are studs at the moment with drywall going up next week. We're at the decision time for floor coverings.

Living room, guest bedroom, office, and study.

Hardwood if you can afford it for sure in the living areas except bedrooms! Laminate is nice if you get the 12 mm thickness or the thickest one you can get, otherwise it is bouncy and cheap feeling/looking..

Area rugs in bedrooms/living areas.. complete carpeting is gross..

I like hardwood myself. However, you live in cold country. Does carpet help with energy efficiency?

I have hardwoods throughout the house. We eventually carpeted over it in most rooms.
The hardwoods look very nice but there is a high maintenance to them to keep them looking sharp and shiny.

If you entertain often and want to impress maybe leave hardwoods in the single room that you do taht the most in, otherwise go with carpet.

Right now real hardwood adds the most value to your home but is expensive.

There are some good laminate products but if you get the wrong one, you will regret it.

Hardwood never seems to go out of style and and will last much longer than carpet.

Carpet is cheaper to install but more expensive to maintain.

I personally prefer hardwood.

Hardwood is by far the nicest to look at but you have kids don't you? They will fuck it up right and good. Pets will do the same.

Ive got bamboo floors and a dog - its pretty scratched up. But a rug helps with that. (although i dont have any rugs)

The worst woukd be a pet with carpeted floors, theyd track dirt in and stain it.

I'd go with a mix actually. Guest bedroom should definitely be carpet. Living room should definitely be hardwood.

For the study I'd be leaning towards hardwood, possibly with an area rug.

For the office, it would depend on how you use it. Do you have clients in there ever? If so, go with hardwood. Otherwise probably a low hard carpet.

I disagree. We just moved from a place with carpet to one with hardwood and we're constantly fighting with paw prints on the hardwood. I thought it was much less hassle with carpet. On the carpet we would vacuum every 2 weeks and steam once a year. With the hardwood I'm wiping up paw prints every day or two. Though our hardwood is walnut stained even darker. It might not be so bad on a lighter colored wood with a lighter colored stain.

You have to deal with paw prints but sweeping it is easy and buy a shark steam mop.. Itll make it nice and shiny. You can mop it once a week.

Paul elaborated nicely on my point of too much work.
Carpet in areas that you want to be lazy in, bedrooms and such.
Hardwoods in any areas that you entertain or do business.

I have a living room, hallway and a family room ( 1400 sq ft ) that is in the process of getting laminate in it now. I bought 12mm thick stuff and the best underlayment possible ( like $60 100 sq/ft a roll stuff ).

Left carpet in the bedrooms.

I had to make sure the installers staggered the planks so it wouldn't look all uniform and it looks awesome.

There are some really good wood laminates out there right now. No one can tell the difference between it and real hardwood unless you tell them.

If you are a couple yuppie lawyers who stand in one place get hardwood. If you are a family that actually lives in a home, get carpet. Carpet is easier to maintain, quieter, warmer, and cheaper. Hardwood is for show.

Engineered stone is made of dust and rock chips bonded together with glue or some shit.

It's a lot cheaper than real stone and you can get it put down with no cracks or grout like you would have with real stone. They can make it look like whatever stone you want. Lasts forever, easy to take care of, and did I mention a LOT cheaper than real stone?

Unless you have a maid cleaning your floor everyday, and kudos if you do, then carpet allows you to skip a day or two.
Carpet grabs the dirt and holds it.
Hardwood and laminate just get your feet/socks dirty.

A vote for hardwoods is a vote for toe funk.

I'm guessing the people having problems with hardwood scratching easily were probably finished with the cheap crappy water based product.

that stuff may dry quicker, and not smell, but it sucks for durability.

Moe is right. I purchased a home with hardwood throughout and, though it looks fantastic, they are a bitch to keep clean. I have pets and a fireplace and be prepared to clean them every day for the most part (at least with a dust mop) if you want to keep them dust free. Having had both carpet and hardwoods there is no question that hardwoods are MUCH higher maintenance to keep clean and shining than carpet. Next house I get will have carpet throughout. Hardwood looks nice but is just too high maintenance. And yes, I'm lazy in that I don't want to dust mop every goddamn day.

We've got an older style middle-dark oak with dark veins in it, stained a light-moderate oak stain so dust doesn't show too easily. It's got 3 layers of poly on it.

One important trick... go with a rougher or satin style finish, not a 'clear sheen' finish. That makes the floor look more naturally rustic, and doesn't broadcast every f'ing bit of dirt or dust or scuff.

We don't have too many problems with scrapes, and none at all with 'imprint' dents. You have to drop something pretty heavy on it to get a dent, and that's not too noticeable.

We wear slippers or socks most of the time, so that means we only have to run a mop or duster of some kind over it maybe every 4-6 days.

I am a little crazy about having the wood get scraped up, though. It bothers me when I detect any new scratch.

I'm pretty sure someone cleans my floors on some kind of regular basis. I know I saw a woman with a mop a couple of times and I don't notice dust that often.

The same service that handles my medical stuff takes care of a cleaning service. They do the windows, floors, and bathrooms. I'm not up to it anymore. I still do my own laundry and cooking for the most part though. That gets expensive and I like to cook. Laundry not so much tongue

Carpet isn't cleaner with my friends kids! even that stain resistance carpet. (hardwood is better imho.) I would rather have wood then carpet I told him to get wood instead of carpet, he didn't listen, he now tells me he should have gotten wood instead of carpet.

Carpet soaks up stuff.... I'm just saying..

grin

it's all a matter of taste and what kind of carpet you get.

I'm guessing the people having problems with hardwood scratching easily were probably finished with the cheap crappy water based product.

that stuff may dry quicker, and not smell, but it sucks for durability.

Use a good Polyurethane.

the type of wood/material is the most important factor. bamboo is very soft and will dent.

Hardwood is cleaner than carpet because you clean it more. It just looks dirtier faster.

I all depends, are you selling? If you're selling is the prospective buyers Mexicans? If so go with rugs it's a better selling point.

If it's a white neighbor go with laminate/wood.

I have animals so I would go with laminate. Dog pee can soak into wood if you don't catch it in time. Laminate the pee won't soak in and will wait till you get home from work.

it's also easier to clean, just sweep for the most part and mop when something spills.

No.
