Ok, so I recently got a new gaming rig. It died Monday night. Last night it was determined that one of the sticks of RAM went bad - the company I bought it from is sending me a new one.

However, it is crappy RAM so I am looking at upgrading to something more suitable (RAM is cheap right now).

It's a Gigabyte board with a single dual channel DDR3 1600 setup (one pair of memory slots).

I check the Manual included from the manufacturer and it states it holds 16GB of Memory. It also directs me to the website to check for memory compatibility.

I go to Gigabyte's website and the online documentation states it holds 8GB of system memory. The compatible memory listing does not list a single 8 gig stick of RAM.

If it were you, which one would you believe?

(Please note, I did send an email to Gigabyte, but will be really surprised if they answer.)

You made your mistake when you bought the rig.

To mitigate, buy 2x 4GB sticks of name brand, gaming RAM appropriate for your system.

It is paired. Note I said it has one Pair on memory slots. As in 2.

And yes, I'm looking at Corsair Vengence or the Ripper blades.

But 16 or 8?

here is the board btw:

Yeah, and?

I have 2. One went bad. They are sending me a new one to exchange with the bad one. Same make\model as the working one.

They're not socks. You don't throw away the good one when one goes bad...you replace the bad one.

I suppose when you get a flat on a new tire you believe the mechanic when he tells you it's time to replace all four of them, too?

Individual RAM sticks usually work just fine even if not "paired", espeicaly with normal timings.

I'd ask Gigabyte support, very strange that manual says one thing, webpage another.

peace

I sent Gigabyte an email RH. But mobo manufacturers are fracking TERRIBLE about support. I doubt they will ever answer my question.

At this point though I'm thinking about sticking with 8.

8 should be more than sufficient, unless you're planning on editing multiple hi def videos simultaneously or something. You work enough with games to know that the difference in performance between 8 and 16 gigs isn't really going to mean much.

You're kinda new to this whole DDR3 thing aren't you?

As to the discrepancy between the web site and the board's documentation - check your firmware revisions and make sure everyone is referencing the same version.

Yeah true, can take ages to answer. (Had an thing with an MSI mobo once that took weeks to sort out through formal channels.)

Maybe a user-to-user support forum or enthusiast site can give a better/faster answer, dunno what's recommended in the US these days!?

If you wanna play it safe, you'll get far w. 8MB though for general use, maybe can swap out the mobo and get more RAM a couple years down the line if you can be arsed. Or just replace the whole comp. =p
