It has to be the last leg of a longer flight. The time was made up before they arrived at the Airport in NYC. /face word_problem

Then it was a red-eye flight on Daylight Savings Time. Are you hiring or something? This feels oddly like a job interview...

Well over 80% of the business flights I have taken have arrived early. Fewer than 5% have arrived more than 10 minutes late. My suspicion is that there is a large amount of buffer built into those times in order to continue to show "good" "on time" statistics. There is also some variability with respect to landing at an airport that is not limited to the weather.

They probably build the schedule around worst-case scenario, e.g., long tarmac waits, head winds, holding before landing clearance, waiting for a gate, etc. Catch them on a good day and your flight suddenly seems to be considerably early.

Predicted stack time in Atlanta didn't happen. Nice jetstream can bump airspeed by over 100mph (unlikely going S on east coast). Airline needed the plane for something else, so authorized the pilot to burn some extra fuel. First one is the most likely. Airlines also allocate a LOT more time for flights, since they get penalized more for delays now. Which means basically every flight lands "early". It's only about 750 miles at ~550mph. So 90minutes is plenty. Anything else is just airline schedule padding. Edit: Quick look shows 2:20 for a bunch of flights. Shaving a hour off that is easily possible.

Atlanta is 10º west of NYC. A time zone is only 15º, and the damn things don't go in straight lines. If you were from some non-US location, it's a reasonable question.

False. There are no reasonable questions of a non-US basis.

Could have caught a southbound jet stream way shorter taxi estimate for both take off and landing shorter time required to wait for runway to clear to land really conservative estimate I would say a mixture of all 4. I've landed 45 mins early a number of times. In fact I don't think I've ever landed on time or late before. Though a flight from NYC to Atlanta is like... 2 hour and 15 mins tops? or something? Some pilots will also have a faster cruise speed than the typical if the weather ahead of them is favorable for it
