Found out about a week before that my aunt has stage 4 bone cancer and some in her lung. So we all rallied and tried to get her spirits up thought we did a good job.

Then she started her first radiation treatment the week after christmas before new years and can't handle the pain. Well she couldn't handle the pain anyway is why she even went to the doctor in the first place but now she's in ICU. She was in CCU because her heart couldn't handle the strain but she's doing better now.

My point is that she still has to go back to work... They'll lose their insurance if she doesn't and she'll most certainly die a horrible painful death.

Does this seem right to anybody?

Footnote: Trolls you have been warned this is not a made up story or an attempt for me to do the same.

That is a horrible cancer. My mom died of lung cancer that spread to her bones and liver. She was in tremendous pain the last few weeks. She died one week before Christmas this year. She was 73 and had great insurance. I can't image the added stress of having to work because you'll lose your insurance.

I feel for you loon. It's not going to be easy. I hope things turn out better for her than my mom. sad

Nice list of side effects, but not as bad as the one for chemo I guess plain

They expect you to work with that in the US? Talk about a backwards barbaric country

I don't know if they can hold her job with FMLA nor do I know if it's something that even kicks in with something not child birth related.

I would hope it is though. I just feel horrible for her and I know you know how this goes Tych... Just bullshit all the way around.

I'm of the opinion that if someone is suffering from stage 4 bone cancer, the state should provide any amount of morphine the patient wants regardless of ability to pay.

I'm opposed to the state paying for expensive experimental treatments that are almost certainly not going to work.

I'm sorry to hear about your aunt. My condolences.

FMLA has some stipulations. It doesn't affect employers with fewer than 10 employees. FMLA states that you cannot be terminated from your job; it does not say you cannot be terminated from your insurance.

Now, that said...FMLA may read that an employee has to be returned with similar benefits as well...it's been 10 years since I've worked in the HR field and I don't really recall the specifics of the law.

Also most states have supplemental legislation to FMLA, as it is an incredibly weak piece of legislation (basically your employer can't fire you for being out on medical leave). Check with your state's employment website or office to see what they have. If it's also Idaho, all I can say is good luck.

I hope this works out for the best, Loon.

Between "providing morphine" and "experimental treatments" there is a huge gap. I'm all for National Heath care if it treats people in this condition with standard care. I'm more than willing to shell out extra bucks to try and save the life of other peoples loved ones with standard care. For me, it would be the Christian thing to do.

I'm aware of a lot of treatment options that are very very unlikely to cure someone with stage 4 bone cancer plus lung cancer.

Can you list some of the treatments that will have a better cost/benefit ratio than morphine?

confused

If there is a standard care option then we should provide it. Pain patches are cheap and should be given too.. I think all those drugs are in generic territory.

I dont think FMLA covers this since your Aunt is the one who is sick. The American with Disabilities Act would be the relevent federal legislation.

The first link is a pretty good rundown at a high level.

Good luck.

First - I wish you and your family all the best. My Uncle passed away from something similar. It was not easy on any of us.

Second - No. In my opinion, it's not right.

The opinion gap for National Health Care seems to be between those that think they should not have to pay for the "have-nots or 'lazy people' who think they are entitled to health care" and those that think it's the "Christian or right thing to do as a civilized society". I am one of the latter.

I don't think that everyone who has a 'need' is 'lazy'. I think some people are in circumstances just like your Aunt's. I also think it's the right thing to do. I am 100% for some sort of National Health Care plan.

I had very expensive insurance, $2k a month. I paid for a sons kidney transplant, another sons lost leg, my wifes cancer and hypoxia. This system is broken. These bills will take away a life savings in a heart beat. It is the one social quality of life problem we need to focus on in our generation.

We all die, it is easy to be empathic when you have come so close.

There is much wisdom to discover in these adversities. I hope her suffering is limited.

I have a feeling the only people that feel there shouldnt be social healthcare are people who get socialzed healthcare via their job.
