The closest skiing area to me has a snocat trail that links 2 different areas. What they FAIL to reveal is the run to Central Summit from West Summit culminates in a freakin CLIFF. Yeah I hiked down it...

7 hours of skiing today though! I'm hooked!

It was awesome, but I badly badly sprained my right thumb on a gonzo crash trying to get down a steep section. I can barely use my trackball atm. Beyond that, for my 2nd time skiing EVER, I think I did awesome. I was nailing "intermediate" slopes by the end of the day and I could travel through easy terrain (non groomed) with some level of competence. I can ALMOST parallel turn too, I just keep forgetting to lift the inside leg. ><

Where are you skiing at?

One thing I have noticed is that a Black Diamond on the West Side is far different than a Black Diamond further east lol.

I was at Snoqualmie Pass, first time with a lift ticket today :P

I took that I90 cross trail to Central and it's a freakin straight down bomber slope at the end. I was like, "Really? YEAH RIGHT." Maybe in a few weeks of practice I'll CONSIDER it...

Lessons are for pansies!!!

I watched a lot of people, asked a lot of questions, and did a lot of bunny runs before I even went up a lift. Playing hockey helps me out a ton, the muscle movement is fairly similar - turning is the same, just add more force. Stopping is EXACTLY the same as it is on ice. And no, I wasn't doing black diamond runs today, I was laughing maniacally at the top of one wondering how the eff I was supposed to get down :P

So I hate to give you this news, but the blacks on Snoqualmie are pretty much blues elsewhere. Unless you're at Alpental.

I was doing double blacks at Crystal my first year of snowboarding because my buddy (who's a skier) was a dick and didn't want me to slow him down. It's a hell of a way to learn, but they're not too bad after awhile.

Oh I know this, but even an easy blue is intimidating if you've never done it before. Ever.

My very first day of skiing ever...I was with friends. I took the lessons for an hour or so, they went off and farted around while I was there.

Lessons finished, they came and found me...and proceeded to spend the rest of the day taking me down black diamond slopes.

I survived, with no injuries, and I even finished a couple without falling - but those things are a mess plain

There are a lot of things that will be intimidating on the slopes until you're comfortable with the basics. The big key is to always keep your speed to a point that you feel comfortable with and if something happens, you won't get hurt or can recover from. When I was doing double blacks for the first time, I went slow as sh** because if you mess up, you're probably going over rocks. Once you get more comfortable, pick it up a little faster. It's a fine line at times, but if you start getting freaked out, hit the breaks cause they're a hell of a lot softer than hitting the trail. :P

The mountain is a ton of fun, but you gotta respect it and understand your limitations. I worked as a lift operator on Summit East (used to be called Hyak) and can tell you, ski patrol usually brings down the cocky ones on a sled.

Just don't make the mistake of hitting a black slope in the Alps with the confidence gained from black slopes somewhere else. I've skid and/or snowboarded for 25 years and get a bit scared at times. Half-mile long 50 degree inclines are fun. tongue

Took me about 2 years to be able to tackle a black diamond without any issues/concerns whatsoever.

I started when I was 12 or 13. By 15, I was doing double black diamonds no problem.
