I've never done this before so just scream things out at me if you think I've done something terribly wrong.

Kingston HyperX 12gb RAM http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0037TO5C0

I plan to install windows on the SSD and everything else on the Caviar Green HDD. I plan to SLI two GTX560 Twin Frozr II cards together. The only old components I intend to keep from my old rig are the NZXT Zero case, an Antec 650w power supply, a CD/DVD drive and a 250 gb hard drive.

looks good

about the case, I didn't read the review, but after building many computers, the most important factors for me are, room to work, and edges that are milled so you don't get scratched and cut when you inevitably bash your knuckles in the case. (This is why I always use Antec cases now, they're always reliable construction.)

i'm no expert but are you sure that's enough power supply to run two of those 560s?

You may run into trouble with a 650 running an i7 SLI rig, would give it a try though, if you start having problems you'll know what it is happy

this

650w isn't enough to run that video card x2 under stress IMO. I'm sure it WILL run it, but do you want to risk it every time you're stressing the computer?

another thing, make sure you've got enough 12v rails on it...

I didn't look at the case much (other than to think it is ugly...but that's your choice, not mine)...but you might want to look into getting one that has a door on either side. Mine opens up on each side, so I was able to install the mobo and all the parts outside of the case, and just stick the door back on and lock it in. makes cleaning it easier too (look for metal handles or sturdy ones anyways...mine messed up and the handle popped off, so I have to use a screwdriver to open than side up in place of the handle lol).

I think your PSU is going to be a bit too small for the load.

Most of the games I bought would not run in sli, wound up turning one card off most of the time.

Make sure the games you really want to play work with sli, otherwise, you're just wasting money.

I'd consider not getting a Caviar Green.

They run at 5600, not 7200. So you will experience a bit more lag time in loading, especially if you're only putting Windows on the SSD.

They must have changed them then.

I've got some of the 500g ones around in machines, and they're only 5600.

7200 rpm 64 mb. I specifically chose the Green over the Black because reviews say it's much quieter.

i wouldn't buy 2 560's ...especially the 2 you have selected

if you are going to buy 560's go with the 560 TI's or the 448 core 560's

but if you are going to spend $400+ on video cards...it's better to just get 1 good card and avoid SLI

a 570 will be overall cheaper and will outperform 2 normal 560's in sli

a 560 448 core will be even cheaper and depending on the brand are equal or better than a 570

for $500 you can buy a 580 which will be better than 2 560 ti's

for clarification there are 3 different 560 gtx cards
here they are from low end to high end

560 gtx <---you have these selected
560 ti <---$25 more expensive but much better
560 ti 448 core <---a month old and equal or better than stock 570's and about $80 more expensive

Don't cheap out on the power supply. Someday you will upgrade those video cards and blow it up, this has happened to me. I got a 1200w supply to run one gtx590 (btw that card sucks).

You'll be better served getting one big ass video card than two, less awesome cards in SLI. Much better bang for the buck. SLI doesn't double performance, it essentially gives an additional 20-25%.

In 3 or 4 years when your video card is no longer cutting it then you can add another one in SLI for crazy cheap as it'll be 4 year old hardware.

I agree with the statements that your power supply is potentially under powered.

I wouldn't recommend the i7 over the i5 processor, unless you're going to be running a lot of applications that support multi-threading.

If you don't know what that means, I reckon that means no.

http://www.brighthub.com/computing/hardware/articles/48391.aspx

Read up on it at least, then decide ^^

ok I'll forget SLI'ing then.

As for the processor, don't any games make use of the multi threading that the i7 offers?

That motherboard you're looking at is about 50 bucks cheaper @ newegg, just FYI.. Between Newegg and Tigerdirect, those are probably the only 2 sites you should shop for computer components.. I've rarely seen Amazon beat them..

Not really, I haven't given it much thought. I do plan to eventually replace my old NZXT Zero case with a Silverstone Aluminum case, it has an unusual structure that lets heat rise and escape through the top. http://www.amazon.com/SilverStone-Aluminum-Uni-Body-Computer-CS-FT02B-W/dp/B0030MHEKY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325441331&sr=8-1

but since I've posted this thread I've changed my mind on a lot of these components. I'm going for an ASRock z68 Extreme4 mobo instead, a i5-2500k instead of the i7, a Samsung 830 64gb SSD and a Caviar Black 1tb HDD. And I've decided not to SLI.

good choice on the SLI, it's a gimmick; one card is plenty. here's some food for thought though, if you plan to go middle price range it be cheaper to buy it already made then to put it together yourself... manufactures get good deals on buying components en mass and pass the savings onto you, just be picky about performance specs, and make sure the graphics card isn't the built into the mobo. this way you can also keep your old rig for a bot computer, and save time and a little green in the process. SSD disk for the OS really seems a waste to me, i would understand if it was for the games though.

if you're really insistent about gutting your old machine and putting the old hard drive in... i would recommend getting a cheap external enclosure for it instead of placing it in your tower.

Why would it be better to make my old HDD exteral instead of keeping it internal?

And I want to buy a SSD for the OS and games but to buy one big enough for all my steam games would be too expensive. The technology is still too new unfortunately.

It's pretty old but its SATA. It was bought back when 250 gb cost as much as over 1 tb costs today so that might give you some idea of its age.

well my main concern was the new mobo, not having IDEs, but my second concern was drive speed/space. wouldn't it be better to save the space for a better drive? its old and keeping it external would mean easy to remove once it dies, or you get a larger external drive... you will hardly be using it at all anyways, just storage or pulling old files that you haven't transferred over from the old system. a $10 enclosure would work fine for that.

I have plenty of space in my case but yeah, maybe I'll just wipe the drive and give it to someone in the family after I transfer all my files.

I don't do any video editing, graphics rendering or anything that would make use of the hyper threading in an i7 so I was told that there's no point in buying one, an i5 would serve me just fine for gaming.

LOL i5

You can tell this guy buys whatever is the most expensive and thinks he's pro.

I'm just giving him crap because he did the exact same thing on my thread where I stated I got the i5-2500k instead of i7.

Nope, I don't have all the money yet. Family members like to use me as a short term loan option :/ Besides, I'm probably gonna change my mind about these components 36 more times before I pull the trigger.
