+1 vote for the iPad. It's just the nature of the industry. The iPad is going to have accessibility to most products/apps and will probably be the easiest to use.

an e-reader would be decent on your eyes. otherwise you might as well just read it on your monitor as it will be the same experience.

if you want a tablet tablet, the samsung galaxy tab 10.1 is pretty sick. and the asus transformer prime is supposedly coming out soon.

I'm pretty happy with my Nook Tablet. There are apps that let you take care of email and create documents and spreadsheets compatible with Windows applications. Reading is good and I love watching video on it. The picture is super crisp.

The Prime has been on a limited release so far and all reviews have been pretty impressive.
But Asus is horrible at launching them, as they are no longer for sale anywhere after being on sale everywhere (online only) just over a week ago lol.

 really? gg asus. my sister brought her ipad down this weekend and i wasn't impressed with it. that has nothing to do with my dislike of apple either. i think because i'm so used to android that it's more natural for me and thus, i prefer it.

I actually don't like the size of the ipad, I like the smaller screen of the nook for ease of use while holding it for game play and navigating.

So, for schoolwork the Asus Transformer Prime would be severe overkill.
The Asus Transformer would do you just as well for school related stuff. If you get the WINDOWS version of the Asus Transformer, you can actually run Starcraft II on it. I personally have the Android version 16gb and it is great.
The Acer Iconia tab is also very good. For expandable memory, the Icona wins over the Transformer. To maximize the Transformer you have to buy the keyboard dock and whatnot.. the Iconia you do not. Tech specs wise, the Iconia and Transformer are identical I believe - and the Iconia runs around 50$ cheaper for the same size (i.e. 16gb or 32gb).
I personally wanted the Iconia, but my local Best Buy was sold out of them (go figure.. that should say something).. I have not been disappointed with the Transformer.
The Toshiba one that is out I hear is also good, I don't recall the name of it though.
Samsung Galaxy Tab is probably the "best" one you COULD buy, but you're going to pay a premium for it. It is either one of, or THE only fully open Android kernel tablet on the market currently. Which basically means you can customize it however you want if you have the savvy to do so. the Acer and Asus tablets you can do with what you please also, but you have to root it first, whereas the Galaxy tab I believe is technically already rooted because of it's completely open source kernel.
If I was you, go with the Iconia or Transformer (not the prime).
** EDIT **
The Toshiba I was talking about is called the Thrive. I believe it is the same price as the Iconia. One of the pluses to the Thrive is that if I remember correctly, the battery is removable which is not the case on the Iconia or the Transformer.
Also, if you DID decide to go with the Transformer, I would recommend buying it from Best Buy or somewhere that has a good Black Tie type warranty. Apparently the something about the charger that Asus supplies is proprietary and if you lose it, or it gets stolen it will void the manufacturer warranty to have them give you a new one. The Black Tie warranty will cover it no matter what.

First you need to find out what format is used for your textbooks and then see if they can be read on an iPad or an Android tablet. The cafescribe format is one of the most popular and those e-books seem to have a ridiculous number of DRM restrictions to read them.

it probably won't cost more than $200 and is better than an ipad with the exception of app availability....which isn't all that important to you if you are using it as an ereader
hp also announced it will be making webOs openware

I thought that way too until I picked up the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it was half the weight of my nook and the larger screen is better for doing surfing and doing work related stuff.

The tablets are basically identical in every way (specwise). Except the fact that the Galaxy Tab has a "true" or complete open Android Kernel out of the box. Basically, for lack of a better description, that means it is rooted from the manufacturer. Archos 80g9. The best price to perfomance out thee, uless you can score a nice deal on a touchpad. Dual core, currently has honeycomb, ice cream sandwich coming this quarter, micro Sd and usb key expansion support ( though the 250gb hard disk version has plenty of internal storage).
Got the 16gb turbo for my son for xmas and it rocks.

Plus it is thinner and lighter, which are pretty important for mobile devices that put thin and light as one of the main design goals.

I dunno, playing with the 10.1 it just felt really cheap and plastic. Which I find with almost all Samsung devices.
No HDMI or expandable memory also is a huge turnoff for me. The Transformer manages to pack those in and it is still a fairly thin device.
Maybe I will go in to Best Buy and play with it again.

I'll be the first to say it...the BB Playbook.
It's on sale for cheap, and with OS 2.0 will do Android Apps with BB native Apps/Security.
Sure there's no BBM...but that doesn't sound like an issue to you.
