Subject: Anyone ever donated a kidney (or any other organ)?
My Dad has kidney disease, and was told in 1969 that he wouldn't live another 10-12 years...he was 18 then. He will be 60 in February. A few months ago, his kidney doctor apparently told him his kidneys would fail within the next 2-3 years. If that does happen (and isn't another fluke like it was before), the best 2 options are myself or my brother donating (the only 2 children, and all of his siblings are too old or deceased).

My Mom just told me about this (I knew about the kidney disease, but not about the most recent news...he didn't even tell her until almost a month after seeing the doctor).

I think for me to be eligible, I would have to lose a fair amount of weight (50lbs at least, I could lose more), and my brother might have to do the same (although only 20lbs or so)...but he also has 2 kids and a wife, and he's 6 years older than me...so in the end, I'm the best candidate any way you look at it (which is why she told me first I think).

I was just reading a Q & A about kidney donors and one thing that popped up was insurance...That's a big deal for me. I already have epilepsy, and donating a kidney means seeing kidney doctors for most of my life as well, on top of the neurologists I'll see.

So just wondering if anyone here has any experience.

and there is no way my Dad will ever ask me to do it, it will have to be me or my brother that comes forward. I get that from him, we'd rather be lost and find our own way back and take twice as long than to ask for help and be home in half the time. He doesn't know that I know, and I plan to keep it that way until we get a definite answer from the doctor.

All joking aside it is very generous to donate to a loved one, they have experts doing this, it is very simple these days.

for my children or a sibling I would do it in a heart beat.

anybody else you better cough up some cash if you want me to give you one of my organs.

I am on the DoD's bone marrow transplant list, I just hope they never call or send me a letter.

There is no way in hell I would give either of my parents a kidney.

If you have epilepsy, I think that would make your brother the better candidate.

I haven't donated anything other than blood, and I can't even do that now. They won't take any of my organs when I die even though I'm an organ donor. The risk that there could still be lymphoma floating around in me is too great.

i don't think your epilepsy would rule you out. unless some of your drugs have injured your kidney. i assume that he has nephritis secondary to strep, but i would check that it isnt an inherited dz of some sort. that might mean more testing before you could donate. as to the 'nephrologist the rest of your life', it will be just a routine blood test every 6mth to a year depending. not a big deal, and the same tests you get from your neurologist. once you have a working relationship with your nephrologist, i bet your neurologist can handle it and call the nephrologist with any thing out of the ordinary.

donate, you wont regret it. and you will regret it forever the day after (if) your dad dies from his kidney dz.

my 2p.

I would for a family member in life, and to anyone in death.

EDIT: Also, why would anyone be on a marrow donor list and hope to hell they are never called? Just remove yourself from it already...

An acquaintance of mine (young and healthy) donated one to her father last year and she's doing fine now.

My father went for years with both kidneys failing and on the last round of issues they both failed completely and didn't recover. He goes to dialysis 3 times a week and is on a crazy strict diet. He's doing reasonably well considering that and his other issues. The issue of donation for him never even came up, he just turned 81 and set a longevity record for our family when he turned 60.

If my kid needs one he's welcome to it, but for my father it's a waste. (My kidneys are doing ok, I get tests twice a year. happy )

I donated a kidney for my nephew last year. It wasn't a direct donation, I wasn't a good match for him, but I gave a kidney to a guy, whose wife gave a kidney to another guy, whose brother was a good match for my nephew.

So in all, 3 people donated, and 3 people got a kidney which changed their lives.

I'm old, have a bad heart, have other chronic health problems. They still used my kidney. Didn't change my life a bit, took a couple of days to recover. Didn't cost me much (had to cover the cost of a hotel room for 5 days after the surgery).

Meaning Ptilk got really plastered in a bad neighborhood and woke up in a bathtub of ice missing a kidney, and they still charged him for the room.

when i was like 9 i remember asking the doctor if i could donated a kidney to my cousin who was 8, he had like 4 kidneys that were all bad(2 growing in the place of each one). the doctor told me i could if i was a match but that i would never be able to ride motorcycles again because i would risk damaging my one kidney. being 9 i promptly rescinded my offer to donate. its all good though he lived

my Dad's brother is the oldest male that's been on his side of the family in a long time (blood related of course), and he passed away at 69 with a bunch of problems (kidney failure being one..he was in ICU for 6 months before they pulled the plug on him after he kept getting worse). I think my Dad feels like he won't make it past the mid-60's naturally, which would explain why he didn't tell anyone about it.

Well, when the time comes I don't think either of us (brother or myself) would hesitate to do it if we were compatible. The only thing I'm worried about is if my Dad doesn't ever say anything to us about it. My Mom will probably bring it up and force him into it.
