I would like a gaming laptop...I have a gift card to amazon that I would like to put toward it...budget is $1000 but 800 would be preferable.

Are ASUS good laptops? Any recomendations for a brand within that price range?

800 won't get you a very good gaming laptop. Last time when I bought in that range I went with the Dell Vostro (business laptop) as it was the only one in that budget with a decent video card.

So check out Dell maybe. Though perhaps by now a company has actually started designing budget gaming on laptops.

Read this thread, whenever I want any computer purchasing advice this forum is the best to go to

http://forum.notebookreview.com/what-notebook-should-i-buy/613687-laptop-games-budget.html

Not sure if you can purchase all the laptops listed there in the US...

well, you might be able to buy a gaming laptop for $1,000, if you cap your expectations of what "gaming" entails and stick to older games... If you want to play Skyrim on your laptop then those expectations might not be realistic

I mean, I can buy a laptop for $275 that runs Rome: Total War fine and I'd be happy, but I like old games.

Looked at the main page in the "what nb should I buy forum" and someone in the US was asking for the same price range. Seems this was the best choice

HP Pavilion dv6t Quad Edition series

http://forum.notebookreview.com/what-notebook-should-i-buy/634392-looking-gaming-work-laptop-reasonable-price.html

"Configure it with a 1080p screen and, at checkout, use the coupon code NBT3886. It will save you a lot of $ and get it down to your budget. These coupon codes change every few days, but never buy an HP without a coupon code. You can save up to $500 in some cases."

Lets compare the HP Pavilion dv6t to a same price laptop at Ibuypower...

Coupon Code for -375.00 is NBT2867

$849.99

2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM (2.2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
2GB Discrete GDDR5 Graphics AMD Radeon(TM)
8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
15.6" High Definition

Battalion 101 W251HPQ

919$

i7-2670QM Mobile Processor (Identical)
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (4 less GB)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M 1GB GDDR3 Video (1 GB less, less DDR)
500 GB 5400rpm (500 less GB)

I don't know exactly how some of these parts compare beyond the base stats, but it looks like the HP is better by a LOT for a cheaper price.

Nah the i7-2670QM is a quad-core processor.

It seems there is some hoopla over what exactly the video cards are in the dv6tqe. Lots of ppl are talking to customer service. It seems the 2 GB option is the AMD Radeon HD 7690M, which seems decent.

I got an ASUS laptop, it is sweet. It isn't a gaming one really, it has a midrange graphics card and is sort of geared to watching movies, business apps and surfing/porning out though. It can play SC2 though at "High" graphics

I have a Toshiba Qosmio, it's a heck of a gaming laptop for not an unreasonable amount. Will be a bit over 1000 though.

asus is good stuff.

but 800-1000 wont buy you a "real" gaming laptop.

laptops werent really meant for games.

many of them will do it, but..meh..

if all i had was a laptop..i wouldnt even play games other than maybe solitaire....

I realize laptops aren't preferable, but it's not very practical to bring a big desktop and all the components to Afghanistan.

There are good laptops out there for gaming (I own one), so they can be found. They're big heavy F'ers, but they can handle most games easily. For example, mine can run Skyrim, SC2, BF3, etc with no problems whatsoever.

ASUS G74 is pretty uber, yeah... battery life blows chunks, tho. 1 hour or so on a good run.

Qosmio would be better for the battery life.

I have an ASUS gaming laptop (G73JW) and it cost roughly $1500 new. I can play Skyrim on it no problem, but it can't do max settings. It could do max settings on everything else I had prior to that, though.
