Yesterday, they closed down Ventura Blvd because of a suspicious back pack left unattended at a big retail pharmacy?

Have we become too paranoid? Suppose you lose your cell phone; is this a suspicious cell phone?

What are the elements of suspicion?

Yes. Hopefully this just runs its course and the collective American psyche moves on in the not too distant future. This seems unlikely, but I can still hope....

I think we're just being responsible now. When a backpack can blow up 25 people and a crater in the street, I think its wise to take precautions in crowded areas. I know New York shuts down a street corner every once in a while, but its no big deal because you can just go around.

Who leaves their backpack laying around unattended anyway? Never mind concerned citizens reporting it as suspicious, its going to get stolen.

Can is the key word. Lots of stuff can happen if we imagine hard enough. How much do we interrupt our daily lives to protect ourselves from our imagination?

How many backpack bombs have we had in the US?

Responsible really isnt the correct word.

I can imagine a car bomb being snuck into your car last night (Ive seen it on TV a million times). Did you fully investigate your car this morning before you turned the key? Did you call the bomb squad? Did you evacuate the area before hand to reduce injuries? Were you being irresponsible if you did none of those things this morning?

I don't know how often your daily life is interrupted by this, but I've never seen an unintended backpack just lying in the middle of the street or sidewalk.

Even walking through Grand Central on a daily basis, backpacks and all other belongings are kept nearby. I think theres a pretty obvious distinction between a neglected package and whatever mumbo jumbo you're talking about... Then again we inspect all cars that come into my building. It isn't a big deal.
