I abhor workplaces that require clocking in and out.

We have a finger print ID system to get access to where we work. It sucks in winter because it doesn't read prints for crap when your hands are frozen.

if you are looking for ways to fool it...find out what type of scanner it uses...

if it's optical...a simple picture of a fingerprint should fool it

if its capacitance....it will require a finger mold of some sort...whether rubber or plastic...or something similar that can hold a form

most commercial fingerprint readers are not the sophisticated ones you see in movies

i don't think anyone would be trying to fool it , it would be right in front of my office and i come in before anyone and leave after everyone...

all i care is to have a device able to send break time warnings to my shops floor through speakers and to clock in people coming in late or leaving late for overtime pay. right now we have it on an honor system where they have to fill out their times on a time sheet and the younger crowd sometimes show up 10 mins late but they put the actual start time or go back to work 10 min late while the older crowd is working and its creating a bad atmosphere. most of them are good kids but you get 3-4 of them together and their IQ drops quickly, i don't want to hire a baby sitter...

it use to be fine when i had less than 10 employee but after i crossed 20 guys on the floor and 5-6 always on sites, its getting out of hand. and almost a full time job for somebody.

They aren't bad. I have a client that uses one for parents to clock their kids in and out at a day care center. It scans well has very few misfires, and is robust enough to stand up to daily workplace use. In terms of complete dependability of clock in clock out, some card swipe systems are more solid. But then you run into the do they have the card or id. If you store it in the rack like an old style time card someone is clocking them in and out etc. For a 20-30 person workplace the fingerprint swipe device will work well... so long as it is not an overly greasy or dirty work environment. If your employees work with grease that will be smeared all over the thing when they clock out.

The actual fingerprint scanners are dirt cheap. I think my client pays $80 for them. Just a little USB device. It's the software timekeeping program that is a little more involved and expensive.

You're going to create an even worse atmosphere when you stop trusting everyone because of 3 or 4 kids.

Call the kids on it, most just need a warning that you noticed what they're doing, and they need to knock it off or you're going to have to take action.

There are other time clock devices other than finger prints. Just use those. You don't need anything beyond that besides a little discipline.

not really an issue if trust was a factor in all this i would keep most of the expensive hardware we use behind closed doors. and besides most of the guys that are here to stay really liked the idea, they hate filling in time cards... also my accountant would love me for it.

anyways back on topic , facefrost any idea what the software is called?

the one i am looking at can also read RFID cards or use pin/password. it can also send alarms to a loud speaker for breaks and such which is something id love to automate. the shop floor is noisy so a 5 min warning would be great before breaks, right now there is always one guy that starts a process that goes a bit long and makes noise in the middle of break time and that's a no no.

So you have some reliable employees and some not, and you are able to notice when people show up late, but don't confront them if its consistent, and also let them fill in their timecards as though they worked that time.

Also apparently your employees have trouble telling what time it is so they don't know when to take a break.

And so a $1,300 machine is less to fix the problem and more to degrade trust and morale amongst employees?

May I suggest a clock?

Wouldn't one that uses a card or number do the exact same thing at a fraction of the price?

The company I work for uses the honor system, but since we have to badge in at security if they suspect somebody of cheating they just
pull that one persons security punches from corporate and see if they've been cheating.

I worked in a factory that had them for access not for time keeping, they abandoned using them and went back to magnetic swipe cards.

Scanners became unreliable and when you have a 1000+ workers using them multiple times a day, well you get the picture.

Why does "how well does this product work" always translate into "please use your complete lack of insight and experience to give me advice on how to do my job"?

I though the retina Eye check was the new rave.

retinal scan is a biometric technique that uses the unique patterns on a person's retina to identify them. It is not to be confused with another ocular-based technology, iris recognition. .
