I went up to Universal City and saw this at noon. The actual girl with the dragon tatoo (GWDT) is a postmodern anti-hero. She is a data pirate genius, a misfit who, by the end of the film, I had every confidence she could solve any mystery. I liked her character and was into her as an interesting character. To be honest, I could not read the book. It was too slow and boring. The GWDT spends an afternoon pouring over financial records of a company. How they made this interesting is what makes the film work for me. The film is set in Sweden and I could not help but think how the author took Arthur Conan Doyle and tweaked a Sherlock Holmes plot and made it his own. The protaganist is an investigative journalist, who is invited to a remote part of Sweden, to the island of an the eccentric wealthy family. All types of horrors happen. He hires the GWDT as his assistant. I dont think they give you enough clues to solve the mystery yourself. I just kicked back and was entertained watching the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo kick ass.

In the original movie I have dinner once a month at "Blomqvists" favorite restaurant, one of the better Italian places here in the southern part of town. I also work on the same street where "Millennium" is located.

I just finished reading the book yesterday actually, it was far from boring. Maybe something got lost in translation! Looking forward to seeing the original film now, then maybe we'll give the ameritardized version a go.

There are three Swedish flicks (the so called "Millenium trilogy"), this is the remake of the first one.

Most "Americans" don't do subtitles, I don't mind them so much but at times it does take away from the movie you are watching I enjoyed all three movies, thanks to Netflix I never would have seen them. Oh and I think they are still available for streaming. From the trailer it looks like the same movie, the bits and pieces you are shown anyway.

I went to the movies with my mom and it is the film I wanted to see the most but I did not suggest it because I do not want to see a butt rape movie with my mother.

My son saw the originals when he was in Italy last summer and he enjoyed them. I discussed this version with him yesterday. I have not seen the originals. The butt rape scene and her payback is one of the memorable parts from the film. Maybe this film is not for everyone. But, it is good film making. I thought Steve Zaillian, the Screenwriter, who happens to be a high school classmate of mine and surfing friend from those years, did a masterful job translating this film to the US screen. He kept the film moving forward and tied together so many details in a fluid way. I would love to visit Sweden some day. The landscape seems a little bleak, but like Seattle, I imagine it is easy to adapt to. TGWDT is my type of woman. I could care less if it is bombing. I choose films i want to see, not the popular crap version 8.

I'm so jealous. We have far too many people living in Germany. Of course we tried to remedy that during the centuries, especially the last one, but it didn't really help.

i don't like movies where rape features heavily as a theme. it's just not why i go to the movies. i liked some aspects of the film, but on the whole it was too gratuitously violent for what it accomplished. also, the retribution was way too contrived. it felt more sci-fi or fantasy than drama. the writer would have done better to set it in the future. edit - last night around the dinner table i was put in the awkward position of having to explain to my grandmother why the film didn't appeal to me. she was saying that she liked it. a disturbing interchange, to say the least.

I don't understand why they remade it when the foreign film was modern and the actress in the original was freaking awesome and unique. Maybe I will watch this when it is on Netflix.

Americans are exposed to far less media (news, film, literature) from other countries/cultures than are citizens of most other developed nations (particularly Europe, but also most places where English isn't the main language). So it makes sense that we find subtitles unpalatable; we never have to deal with them.

I just started reading the book this week, before seeing the new movie. So far I'm pretty hooked, although it is a bit slow the first 50 pages of the book. There's a lot of background information right at the start that you have to plod a little way through to get to the meat.

Well the original title is "Men who hate women", according to some the author is driving some feminist agenda with the story (I'll let you be the judge of that), though there are other major themes. Imho, above all it's a crime story, that doesn't shy away from some more unpleasant sides of human nature. Yeah I agree it might not be the best flick to take your religious, conservative mom to.

That's part of it. Although really it goes beyond that. I have never met people as uninterested in the rest of the world as Americans. Although maybe that's the same basic thing at work: less need to care about the rest of the world.

When all of the movies everyone wants to see are made in the US of course people in the US will be focused inward. Until recently other countries didn't even have the means to make a modern, high budget film and they are still way behind in many places. I also think you folks are a little over the top with your condemnations. The few films that made it over here with subtitles (mostly asian films) that were actually good did fairly well. People will read subtitles if you give them something that is new and good. Also, the remake in question has absolutely nothing at all to do with catering to American unwillingness to read subtitles, it has to do with the studio seeing an opportunity to make money.

Not judging the whole country. But movie executives definitely judge whether or not a movie is going to be successful by looking at the lower end of the spectrum.
