Many California people I've met here are either really awesome nice or just total jerks. The area, at least where I am, is incredibly polished and clean. This place is a complete contrast in many ways to where I once was, which was ghetto city, NC.

Most people are well dressed and well groomed, which is kind of intimidating as I am normally not. I drive probably the worst car not only at work but one of the worst I've seen so far. Never seen so many Mercedes!

After moving from a city where most of the populace is below the poverty line to OC, California I feel like I am in an entirely different country. It is astounding the difference in quality of life there is between both towns, with relatively the same latitude, population, and distance from ocean. It's like bizarro world.

peace

Welcome to Cali!

IMO NorCal is a little less pretentious in the looks/fashion. The whole LA area seems to be caught up in the presentation and kinda Jersey Shore-ish to me. But it's still Cali and still awesome!

Interesting. I just moved to your town's main competition on the opposite coast.

Here, the car competition does not even exist. That is because most people do not even own cars, let alone require them to get around daily. The proles and the patricians live far closer to each other than LA or any other city I've lived in. It's not that the differences don't exist - you will get a different ratio of rich-to-poor in the Bronx as opposed to, say. Tribeca. But you still get lowly street vendors and laundromats in Tribeca.

Anyway, good luck in your strange land. Also, be sure and put the word "the" before the number of any highway.

It's called economic inequality a country does not benefit from having extremes, extreme wealth or extreme poverty.. the less of a income gap there is the better, a country should have a huge middle class, little or no poverty and few really rich people.

What the us is doing is basically enriching it's wealthiest at the expense of the middle class.

lol. that doesn't even happen once a decade, compared to tornado alley getting rofflestomped every year and hurricanes on the gulf and east coast. i'll take the infrequent quakes that do nothing and the every century disaster over the yearly disasters other areas get to contend with. besides now that he's out here, he gets to spend xmas with me. batting

Depends on where you are in california. Lived here my whole life and trust me, every city has a little ghetto. Down south again depends on where you are. I lived in the fremont, hayward, lathrop, manteca, lodi, sacramento, san diego and many family members in LA, Newark, San Francisco, Livermore, Daly City, Vacaville and other cities and every single one of those have nice areas and ghettos. It is what it is. Some of the people are nice, some are weirdos, some quiet, some rich and some poor. I'd say each city has a little of everything. Dont let the good side of town fool you, there is a bad side not too far away. Thats california and thats the way it is.

Orange county is a suburban paradise -think Agrestic in Weeds. Dont let the hoity-toity people (Pretentiously self-important, haughty or pompous) get you down. There is Orange county and then there is Los Angeles, a study in contrasts. Orange county has great beaches and uniform communities. You are not what you drive, fuggidabout it. You are as good as anyone else. Learn the local subculture and enjoy your life. You get to decide whether it is right for you or not.

You are not kidding about wealth. he lives close to Newport Beach. Here is a yacht from their festival of lights parade.

I used to hang with the Shark Island club people. I had a tax practice in this area. It is a different type of fun. First you must have a yacht. Myself, i was never a commodore, a sailing man, a Thurston Howell the III. But it is fun to party with the wealthy.

I used to pay taxes on my stored wealth every year until the damn conservatives won.. I have no problems paying a 50% income tax if I get a high paying salary after school.

and no we actually don't have any real poverty in Sweden, and what little we have are either refugees, drug addicts or insane. Our middle class grows each year and so does our economy.

I have no problem whatsoever with paying high taxes, taxes has always been a way to redistribute wealth and as long as I'm sacrificing for the good of my nation and my people I'm fine with it.

That is called patriotism, something the conservatives on this board could learn a thing or two about as they blather on about their love for their nation.

Germany, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Austria and Holland are basically running the same system as us and the difference is slight. Size has nothing to do with it.

Orange county is the Republican stronghold of California. Gotcha Grymlo!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_County,_California

Politics

Orange County has long been known as a Republican stronghold and has consistently sent Republican representatives to the state and federal legislatures. Republican majorities in Orange County helped deliver California's electoral votes to Republican presidential candidates Richard Nixon (1960, 1968 and 1972), Gerald Ford (1976), Ronald Reagan (1980, 1984), and George H. W. Bush (1988). Orange County has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1936 landslide re-election for a second term.

Pasadena is definitely a Los Angeles city. I used to live in this area. Old town Pasadena is filled with revelry the night (week) before of the Rose Parade. I used to go to the parade as a teenager. It is crowded. As a local I know where to park and not get scalped. However, if were you, I would park at a metro rail station and take it to Memorial Park station. The Gold line runs through some dodgy parts of LA. Although it would require riding two lines, I can recommend the Universal City metro parking lot as a safer spot to start. Plus you can park your car and walk up to Universal City walk before you go to the parade.

The station you get off at is

Memorial Park Station This will let you off about 3 blocks from the heart of Old Town.

If you are not familiar with Los Angeles freeways you will get frustrated. It can be hard to get over in the right lane and one wrong lane will futz you up, especially if you are new to the area.

People camp out the night before. If you are going to do this then bring warm gear get there early and stake your spot out or buy a bleacher seat. Enjoy. I can answer many questions about Old Town and Pasadena.

we have poverty, real poverty to. Poverty is usually measured as those living on less than half the average income we also have aborigines living in pretty much 3rd world conditions. We still beat Sweden and europe in everything!

SoCal has many different areas, and walks of life, to be sure. If you want the best taste that LA has to offer visitors, do this:

Visit Universal Studios for one solid day. It has tours of all the sites of famous movie filmings, amusement park rides, chances to meet actors, etc, and is not pretentious about who can come in and enjoy the sights. Do all the activities, and enjoy the Citywalk. You can have a fantastic time there enjoying Mummy Returns roller coaster ride, Jurassic park water ride, Terminator 2 in 3D, Waterworld live presentation, and did indoor skydiving in a wind tunnel. Not to mention other live shows and seasonal events.

If you don't like Universal Studios, the traffic getting there, and associated impressions about Angelinos in general, then LA is definitely not for you.

Subject: So after being in Southern California now for a straight week my impression is...
I was thinking about creating a little war between Little Saigon and Little Tokyo at some point happy

I was really considering going to that Rose Parade but I really don't want to camp out overnight or anything =\ Plus I am not a huge fan of parades. If I had kids I would but I think I'll just watch it on TV. This weekend I will probably do a bit more restaurant adventures and probably see if I can catch anything off of the pier in Newport Beach right next to the Harbor. I hope I packed my fishing pole else I'll just buy one

The guys who I work with now have been incredibly helpful and they all really want to show me around. Very inviting. I am defiantly going to see Universal Studios at some point as well as do some Whale Watching and also the San Diego Zoo. I got a huge list of things to do. So big I actually procrastinate a lot about it, haha

whale watching and the san diego zoo are pwn. make sure you go to the san diego .. fk whatever they call it now. it used to be the wild animal park. now it's some bs about a safari. it's a hell of a lot more interesting than the zoo if you can pay an assload of money to go into the enclosures. otherwise it's not that worth it. that's where i got molested by a giraffe.

A coked up fisherman would be interesting to see. I saw lots of homeless but they never asked for any change or anything they just laid around on the beach

That is the single dumbest thing I have seen in my entire life. I've lived in L.A./Socal for 30 years, went to USC in the heart of L.A. and lived in at least 5 different parts of the L.A. basin. The idea that Universal represents L.A. is so hopelessly stupid that I wouldn't know where to begin. Universal is for tourists, real Angelenos ignore it entirely.

Go to Venice Beach. THAT is L.A. Go to Rodeo Drive. THAT is L.A. Go to the Santa Monica Pier. That is L.A. Go to Hollywood. That is L.A.

Universal my ass. I had a girlfriend who worked there once. As a VP no less. You couldn't get us/me in there for free. raised_brow

Go to the places I mentioned. If the traffic is even an issue you're in the wrong city country boy.
