Welcome to the Vault Network forum archive.

This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least 20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per page).

Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50 topics per page, while others deemed of historical signifigance may be archived in their entirety.

We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in lieu of that.

	Slashdot posted: but unlike its previous rapid release forebears where not a lot changed, a huge feature has landed with the new version: the JavaScript engine now has type inference enabled. Personally I've never understood chasing the performance carrot as being a big deal. Sure I want them to keep on working on making things more efficient, but at the end of the day does Slashdot, Reddit, or even VN load noticeably faster or react more responsively because of it? In other words, is there a test outside of vague cherry picked benchmarks that demonstrates a real world impact? For me this just registers as /shrug, a script that took .002 seconds to run now takes .0014 seconds to run. Every time they shave another 10% off of execution time, the harder it is to do and the less impact it actually has. -----signature----- (none)

The development and interest is still there, but with all the companies jumping on the appstore bandwagon the plain old application is becoming popular again as well. I don't think it was ever all about web integration anyway, I think it was about ease of access for the common user and the appstore concept solves that quite nicely. -----signature----- (none)

I think the increasing popularity of cloud computing is going to also increase the interest in powerful web apps too (as browsers performance increases). Apps run on the device, have to be installed on the device and don't do much good when you are not on that device the app is installed on. Web apps like Google Docs, Office 365, even simpler ones like Gmail and Outlook Web Access, are available everywhere all the time. Apps are popular, but I think web apps will become more popular as well once browser performance gets reasonable. -----signature----- (none)
