Subject: Topic of the Week wants to know your thoughts on the alternative rule sets?

I've never rolled a character on Mordred. Something about being rolled at practically any place, by any one just didn't appeal to me. Although for a lot of players, it provided countless hours of entertainment and camaraderie. That server was home. Now sadly, it is all but dead, and because of the way the servers were set in the beginning, the characters can't be transferred to Ywain. Many of the players are frustrated and angry to say the very least.

Gaheris faces the same dilemma. On Gaheris, other than the occasional dual, there is no PVP. In the Frontiers, there are no towers, only the main keeps, and they are occupied by high end mobs. Those mobs have to be defeated and they drop seals that the players collect and turn in for realm points.

The other thing that makes these servers unique is that they lack the realm specificity that Ywain carries. On the alternative rulesets, you can have characters on all 3 realms and mix certain gear between them, you can roam each other's lands and capital cities, log off, switch realms, and log right back on with no timer restrictions. A cleric and a hero can run together and assist each other.

Right now, both of these servers are suffering from a severe lack of population and feel that the game developers aren't doing enough to keep their servers alive. So many have said they would gladly drop all their gear if they could transfer their characters to Ywain. For many, moving to Ywain meant a total restart to the game, and abandoning the characters that they often worked years on developing. It meant abandoning the houses they put up, the gear and items they collected over the years, and the plat they earned. None of it could be moved to Ywain. So there it sits on a dead server. Hard to trade for the Ywain equivalent so, you start again.

Topic of the Week asks: Have you played on the alternative rule sets? Do you think anything can be done to revive those servers?

Do you have any good topic ideas? If you have one you'd like to see posted, please drop me a line!

Add the proposed Molvik battleground to Gaheris. We (Gaheris players) get a PvP option, Mordred players can move to Gaheris and play their open-ended PvP, Ywain players can come to Gaheris to try out cross-realmed groups, etc. Everyone wins.

The code is too different for Ywain players to cross realm group. Molvik's intention on Gaheris was to let Ywain players vs. Gaheris players, not group with them. So they still wouldn't be able to cross realm.

Oh wait I'm not a programmer so there is no way I could possibly know that...

He's not saying Ywain toons would have access to the battleground, he's saying people would reroll from Ywain to try Gaheris out.

Mordred can't be saved because there are better games out there for free-for-all PvP. The strength of DAOC PvP lies in RvR, not strict PvP.

Gaheris can't be saved without a time machine. Put simply, someone would need to go back 8-10 years and pound into the heads of Mythic's decision makers that while RvR made them different from EQ, there's going to be more and more games, and they are all going to be better than EQ. Show them that the PvE market is larger than the PvP market, and that owning a healthy slice of the PvE market is more cash than owning the entire PvP market......especially when you will still own the PvP market because no one has done it better yet. Convince them not to make the short-sighted decisions that catered to the RvR crowd but pushed away the actual majority of their playerbase.

Other than not reversing those short-sighted mistakes and not putting out new content, EA/Mythic hasn't really done anything wrong in the last 2-3 years. They've done a lot right, actually.

one downfall of daoc was making toa mandatory for people who liked to rvr. they should have either made toa items not effect rvr or added a way to obtain equivalents to them through rvr.

the way nf was implemented was also a bad choice. it was far to vast and different of an area to thrust people into.

all in all massive changes to the way a game is played has always proven detrimental to the game. daoc and swg are perfect examples.

But they did learn their lessons from ToA and implemented a vastly superior system with Champ levels. Vastly superior in terms of choices of how to get the rewards and in balancing the rewards, not necessarily in terms of the power of the rewards.

What games? Ultima Online in its original oldschool days is the only FFA pvp MMO I can think of. WoW/Rift/Aion/SW:ToR are all faction vs faction. Also Gaheris is done as well. I log in on my 50 friar and /who is like 40-50 players and Im sure thats really only 15-20 people with multiple accounts. Just on any of the 3 sides in Molvik or CV gives you more than that on any given day.

Thanks for the topic! They were going to merge Mordred and Gaheris together and have a PvP battleground within the Coop ruleset which I suggested. The compromise was that Gaheris would also receive a new PvE Battlegroup as well. This was publicly announced and almost implemented (you are given the option to port to Molvik at keeps but it fails to send you there). Mythic had a reshuffling while the plan was being implemented and so it was tabled. What a shame.

I thought it was tabled not because of a reshuffling but because of the outcry from Gaheris? I think the outcry was to the magnitude of most of the server threatening to cancel their accounts if I recall correctly. I'm just going by the feelings I was getting from the discussions that went on here so maybe I got the wrong impression, but I seriously doubt it.

Quazi, you/we can't have it both ways. Gaheris players continually complain that Myhic ignores us, so if that is true, why would they suddenly listen in regards to this one issue (a server merge)? I'll go with Daamien's explanation. Partly because it makes sense, partly because he is after all 'in the know'.

I'm curious how you port to a bg from a keep full of mobs?

Oh never mind he meant port to a realm keep IN the bg.... well, maybe?

I dunno, companies tend to listen when a large portion of their income gets threatened and all the jokes about Gaheris being dead aside I think you guys generate a substantial enough amount of money to make them think twice about losing it all through something like a Gaheris/Mordred merger.

A large number of Gaheris players were against an actual merger between Mordred and Gaheris. Many were very against it. However, the idea of adding a BG that had Morded-esque PvP within it (but not clustered/merged with anybody else) seemed to be more palatable to most people. Obviously I can't speak for everyone, and since I was one of the most heavily pro-Molvik players on Gaheris, probably not the best person to get an accurate answer as to its popularity from, but from what I gathered back when this was announced, the general feeling among the pro-Molvik crowd was: "Give us the battleground, but if Mordred wants to use it, make them roll characters on Gaheris." The anti-Molvik crowd obviously didn't want Molvik at all, but most of them, or at least the ones I knew, seemed more tolerant of the Molvik idea if Mordred didn't tag along for the ride. If they decided to implement it today, it would likely be only adding Molvik to Gaheris, and not merging Mordred+Gaheris or allowing Mordred to actually access the battleground from Mordred.

That'd be a shame in my opinion, I think including Mordred in the Molvik BG would save Mordred from deletion and give some 'different' kinds of people to play against instead of just people you know.

I agree it would be a shame. I'd enjoy being able to play with Mordred characters and players in the BG, but I'd also prefer Mythic use the solution that alienates the smallest percentage of the Gaheris population.

It would have been a character copy from Mordred to Gaheris with the addition of battlegrounds: Molvik for PvP and Cathal Valley for new PvE. As you all know, half of that arrangement was introduced with the addition of Cathal Valley. They even set up the porting options to Molvik as well at border keeps but did not finished adding the zone before there was downsizing and reshuffling at Mythic.

Some people were opposed to this arrangement, but it was a compromise where every party involved would gain something and still be optional. I conceived the idea and worked hard with developers and Marrian (the former PvE TL/Knight) to draft the plan that was very publicly announced on the Herald.

It's a shame that it has been two years and Molvik has not been implemented as planned. I doubt it will ever happen but at least Gaheris gained Cathal Valley from the arrangement. Mythic has a bare-bones staff and is focusing on its Ywain population.

they did learn with subsequent expansions, but the damage of toa was done. they also didnt add a rvr solution to toa for way too long. id also argue that by gutting toa to make the pve easier was a bad move, it didnt solve their problem as they still had to add rvr solution but it meant the toa pve encounters were pointless for the most part. all in all toa was a big mess for a long time.

regarding the gaheris/mordred merger i was around and active back then and very much against the merge. there cant be pvp/rvr on gaheris without the gank squads coming over. the thought of dealing with gank squads while doing keeps, dragons, toa, whatever was very unappealing.

how about a different note for the original post.

Not exactly sure of who owns the game anymore, if Mythic still exists as a business or if its just a few employees that work for a parent company. Anyways here is the biggest issue, ADVERTISE, I mean seriously the game has been around for 10 years and there has not been a game in a box on a shelf OR any sort of advertising to get new people into the game. I am speaking for the game in general, but as for Gaheris, or alternate rule set servers specifically if they would advertise the game maybe showing some of the different server options somehow they could generate some interest from new people looking for a game or from some of the original players a decade ago.

Just my 2 cents,

Kiraniri

I think that might have made a difference a few years ago, but with such a massive influx of newer MMOs in the past few years I really don't think that what you suggest would do much to help DAoC at the moment. The money required to undertake what you suggest certainly wouldn't be worth it unfortunately.

I agree that a campaign would be out of the question, but heck just drop a teazer on some of the other advertisements that EA does. OR at least put some of the same free-ish DVDs for trials like WoW does, just something, heck a little flier inside of the box from their other games.

Now those are some low-budget ideas that could really work!
