The sound card will sometimes play at a VERY high volume static pops and cracks that will not stop until the machine is shut down.

Adding / removing USB devices usually sets it off faster than anything else. But it's been known to just randomly do it.

Updated sound card drivers didn't fix it.

Original sound card drivers didn't fix it.

Reinstalling the OS from the recovery partition didn't fix it ( and it didn't install ½ of the pre-installed ASUS utilities that were on there before I did it )

I've thought about skipping the ASUS stuff altogether and just putting Windows 7 on it from a clean ISO.

ASUS thinks I am having a hardware issue and wants me to send it it for repair.

I am a little scared to do that since the last time I sent my laptop into ASUS for repair the damn thing got stolen on the return trip. It's how I ended up with the G73 I have now.

The good news is that I do have LoJack for Laptops enabled on it happy

Which works very well, I was in Wichita this weekend:

Sounds like you covered mostly everything I would of thought to try. Maybe try reinstalling DX?

Reinstall OS if it still does it, then has to be hardware.

I don't think you can re-install DirectX in Win 7

Googling g73jh loud sound gets a few hits and even a video. Some say uninstalling creative can help, but most seem to argue for hardware.

I have the same laptop and it works fine, so its not something thats unfixable for the model if thats any help.

Well thank god I am not the only one having the issue. I swear I googled this once and didn't come up with anything plain

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLiMwENbATg

That's EXACTLY what my laptop is doing.

The only way I've found to get to to not do it is to disable the onboard sound and use a USB dongle for audio.
