My personal favorite part.

"Look, we tried the talent tree model for seven years. We think it’s fundamentally flawed and unfixable. We know some of you have faith in us that someday we’ll eventually replace all of the boring +5% crit talents with interesting talents and give you 80 talent points that you can spend wherever, and that the game will still remain relatively balanced and fun. We greatly appreciate your faith, but we fear it is misplaced. It’s not a matter of coming up with enough fun mechanics, which is challenging but ultimately doable. The problem is the extreme number of combinations. When you have such a gigantic matrix, the chances of having unbeatable synergies, or combinations of talents that just don’t work together is really high. That’s not lazy design. That is recognizing how math works."

In other words

"We can't do what Trion has done with Rift, because we're bad"

Trions design philosophy consists of throwing a billion choices at you, and if something is overpowered, throw in a counter somewhere and watch people take advantage of it, and if that doesn't work, just Nerf it, you have a Billion other things to choose from.

Blizzard designs philosophy consists of "It's to hard... lets do something else"

This is why I can't stand GC, and why I think bliz upper managment is failing (because they let him continue to be employed).

WoW has lost ONLY 10% of subs after 7 years. That's insane. That is ridiculous growth and retention. It means you're doing something right.

So instead of sticking with what works, they mutilate core systems (10% loss there) and when that fails, they decide to go even further with it (I hope they lose another 10-20% over kung fu panda with coloring book talents).

WOTLK was good. Cata is a rehash of WOTLK - same exact content setup, same rep grinds, same emblem revamp garbage. They massacred the talents and tanking with cata for lack of anything new or interesting. They're doing the same thing with kung fu panda - same repetitive content, massacre talents even more for lack of adding anything new or fresh.

I'm glad I bailed WoW when I did and can't see myself ever returning. Cata ruined WoW for me and the Firelands patch sealed it. I said then the only way I'd even consider returng was if they did something extraordinary in the next xpac. Instead it'll be cata part 2 with pandas. MMORPG playing children, rejoice, you can play WoW as your stuffed animal now.

Personally I find that the old system with +1% crit and such choices works better when you have more levels. I don't want my only choice in an entire week's worth of gameplay to be +1 crit, but if I get to make 10 choices in a week, I'll gladly blow some on stat boosts.

I can't figure out where the disconnect is. Since when did people stop liking the talent spec meta-game? What I heard was, "We can't balance talents so we're not even gonna try anymore." You'd think they could just stick with what worked and fix any unintended exploits. Elemental shammies like their class and spec? Then leave it alone. Melee shammies feeling generally gimped? Then figure something out for that one spec. Why they felt like they had to take a perfectly happy class and spec (ret/prot paladins) and make them into holy rogues is an example of something that makes no damn sense to me.

I guess iterative development isn't something they're capable of when it comes to class design.

Makes you wonder, though: how many people would character transfer to a new server type that had 3.3 talents/mechanics/1-80 content but the new Cata 80-85 zones and 81-85 talent additions.

We see this response from players who say “I don’t care about PvP,” or “raid bosses can’t be snared,” or even “I am a solo player, so I don’t need a defensive cooldown.”

First, a lot of players do care about PvP, and almost every choice in the new talent model will be interesting for them. We are also taking some steps with Mists to encourage more crossover between PvP and PvE as the game once had, so even if you don’t care for PvP now, maybe we can get you interested in the future.

What this really says is that since we are still trying to make WOW into a super huge E-Sport. It hasnt caught on for years but this time dammit we will get it!

It's probably largely due to the fact that they continue to raise the level cap, giving players more and more talent points to spend.

They either have to keep extending the talent trees or players are going to have nearly 2 full trees.

I have no idea why they decided to revamp every tree for every class so much, though. It was fine in Vanilla, BC, WotLK, and would still be fine if they would just leave the level cap alone and think up better content.

+5 levels isn't content. It is a pretty good illusion of content, though.

They literally could have left the level cap at 60, balanced out the trees the way they were with tweaks here and there, and still released all the expansions with little to no complaints about a level cap increase.

This is the same thing that ruined SWG. SWG had no levels, but you had 250 skill points to spend across many 4x4 skill boxes. There were many XP pools, one for each skill so while there was overlap, it wasn't across everything. Then there was a Combat XP pool that was tagged on the end that did overlap, but was capped.

There were many overpowered combos that could be put together, stacking defense from putting all of the points into the defense columns or going all offense by doing a similar thing.

Anyway, they couldn't balance it and then did a combat revamp, then they just decided to scrap the whole thing and make it level and class based, "The NGE". It has tanked since then and is closing next week.

I don't like GC or agree with his statement, but can you really say Rift is balanced? I saw some of the problems GC is talking about in Rift. Many useless filler talents or +5 to crit 3/3 or 5/5 type talents. That's what happens in these open talent type systems, people find a way to maximize on certain builds. Then it gets nerfed and then everyone gets pissed.

AC2 had the same problem. They weakened you if you started spending points in other trees. This crap has been going on for years.

The problem is the dev teams frequently put out builds with new/differing talents under the assumption that it looks good, without even bothering to number crunch the numbers that THEY THEMSELVES created.

Dev 1: I'm drawing a blank on this one, so let's just do +1% to damage here.
Dev 2: Ok that looks good.
Dev 1: Now on this one, let's tie it to the previous one and add a new ability that does X amount of damage.
Dev 2: Now wait, isn't X too much damage considering it's going to have another 5% added to it from the previous tier?
Dev 1: Shh, I'm concentrating here. Besides, math hurts my head. Now on the next tier...

He really needs to have a talk with Reed Hastings, the Netflix CEO, and ask him how well it worked out when you take this kind of attitude. We know better than you and we dont care if your unhappy cause we are untouchable.

Then he can show him how he lost 2/3 of his company's value when the stock dropped from 300+ down to 80.

I think the GC quote from the OP is an attempt at humility. Somehow the guy just always seems to come across as a giant douche though. If they insist on keeping GC around they really ought to hire a PR person to communicate on his behalf. All GC seems to do is antagonize the playerbase every time he makes a public statement.

Honestly, what kind of douche says "You're wrong. Next!" in business correspondence? That kind of rudeness and arrogance just isn't socially acceptable and certainly isn't professional. Reading this kind of nonsense makes me think that Blizzard is keeping GC around as part of the most elaborate display of trolling in history. Otherwise, I can't think of a single reason why they haven't canned this guy yet.

Rift isn't balanced, but pretty every game with more then 1 class, will never be balanced.

Hell, you don't even need classes to have unbalanced "classes", UO proved that.

Point is Trion knows this, and Blizzard seems to think there won't be a cookie cutter or overpowered spec... with an even more dumbed down system.

As for Boone, notice I didn't use Warhammer Online as a comparison, because Rift is closer to WoW in terms of Talent systems. Instead of going to wussy route and dumbing down their game, they went full all out and let you have even more choices.

If your class doesn't have a counter in that game, you're either overpowered and will be nerfed, or people just haven't found the counter to you yet.

You must have been talking to my husband as well, because he's been saying that since Cata came out.

Yes, that's sad. Not surprising though. Blizzard apparently has a company culture of arrogance, a habit of telling their customers how to play, and unwise published statements containing both. I started saying that during Vanilla.

Bottom line on this is that it's just a further dumbing down and simplification of the game for casuals who want to spend 10 minutes a night during commercials of Jersey Shore and American Idol and have access to everything the game offers any player at all.

Unfortunately, the casuals that are even more casual than this place, outnumber you, and outnumber especially the hard core players, so Blizzard is listening to them and their dollars.

Someone who doesnt have any formal business training. I see "Peter Principle" all over this guy for some reason.

Like Ive said before, regardless of how HE wants to come across, its how hes perceived by the CUSTOMERS that is the most important thing. People think hes a douche. He should really start giving a shit about that and changing the way he communicates instead of continuing the way he does. Maybe hes not, but he sure as Hell reminds me of a nerd who got the crap kicked out of him in school, became a cop and now revels in the power the position appears to grant him.

Haha! This is hilarious to me because I pretty much said the same thing to a moderator here on VN not long ago. Something like 'Intent is meaningless in the face of perception' or close to that. When you are representing a company in any fashion you can't just spew out whatever crap you want to since you aren't speaking for just yourself.

I wonder how many subscribers would return to WoW if Blizzard fired Ghostcrawler? I betcha it would be measurable.

The person who doesn't get it is somewhere up the management chain from Ghostcrawler.

This whole PR campaign to humanize the devs smacks of someone further up trying to solve the wrong problem, and not having a clue.

Just like Cataclysm did so much damage to the game (which Blizzard spent an incredible amount of time and money doing) because whoever set the basic objectives for Ghostcrawler's team to meet didn't have a clue who his (won't be a her) customers are, and what they want. Or were and wanted, anyhow.

The rumor when I showed up to work in Silicon valley 30+ years ago was that when something like this happened Dave Packard would fire 3 layers of managers just to be sure the one who really didn't get it was gone. (Activision Board of Directors, are you listening?)

With all the PR around Netflix the last 6 months...think about it...Netflix is doing great compared to Blizzard.

You really think the actual fixes would have to come out first? I dunno, maybe, but I think a sizable portion of people would return just to support the removal of GC. I have a feeling that that prick is gonna be sticking around though, so this is all just hopeful dreaming on my part. tongue

I don't think he's being sexist. I think he's being fairly savvy to what could be Blizzard's good-old-boy culture. Good gawd, Quazi, you KNOW females don't play MMO's, what makes you think a female could MANAGE one?

-Ouch, I poked my cheek too hard with my tongue.

Seriously, I know he's saying a female wouldn't be that stupid. I understand the level of management we are talking about here.

Well, if they turn the clock back, scrap Cat and return to LK and go forward from there, I think his replacement might have a chance.

And yes, the minute you put on your "corporate badge", you are not speaking for yourself, you are speaking for your company. And Blizzard, overall, has never been particularly professional in any of its "published" comments.

Hate to say this, but in the real world, especially in male dominated environments, females are held to a higher standard. Not supposed to be that way but it is. "Glass ceiling" and all.

A female able to survive in the chain of command above Ghostcrawler, in the male dominated Blizzard environment, wouldn't be this stupid.

Come back and talk to me when you've been in the work world for decades, and paid attention. Until then, perhaps the condescension is misplaced.

happy

I think we'd all agree with that. Mistakes happen. And sometimes it's a just a one-time judgement error. Bad data. Internal politics. Happens for a variety of reasons.

When they happen repeatedly in an almost predictable pattern, then you can start thinking about the root cause, which in the case of Mr. Street and his management, seems to be quite obvious. wink

edit: I've always told my kids, if you're not making mistakes, you're not learning.

Do you think Blizzard has demonstrated learning from GC's mistakes?

Actually, Quazi is spot on. Your posts are sexist. You are attributing qualities to a person or persons based on their gender, not their actual intelligence, competence or qualifications.

That is, by definition, sexist. But then, many woman complain about a man's superior attitude out of one side of their mouths, while extolling their own virtues out of the other. It is called double standard, and your posts are textbook double standard.

So in other words GC is saying that there are a lot of variables in the game (which there have bee since it was release) but instead of doing his job dealing with them, which he can, he is instead going to take them away( which he has been systematically doing since BC)to make it easier on himself.

Greg Street is by definition a product of the "ME" generation of that there is no doubt.

I'm actually glad to see that this is the prevailing attitude now. Hopefully that means that the current corporate biases will eventually disappear one day and take the glass ceiling with it.

Until then, unfortuately, even at CEO levels, as the phrase goes: women have to work twice as hard to get half as far still exists, even at some of "the best" companies world wide. (And Blizzard doesn't even make that list.)

And as far as You are attributing qualities to a person or persons based on their gender, not their actual intelligence, competence or qualifications, no we are not. We are saying a female can't be seen as even remotely incompetent and continue to maintain her position. It's a lot less obvious than it was 35 years ago; unfortunately, that culture is still there.

-Understands all too well what that means getting in the door, staying there, and promoting AA hiring in a hostile environment.

First, sorry I brought gender up. That was a mistake, one of many I made this week, and detracted from this thread, which is about Ghostcrawler lacking the skills needed to be lead game developer of a game I would want to play.

Second: In the early 1980s, straight out of school, in a progressive work environment that was roughly hiring and promoting a 50/50 mix of men and women in a gender blind way, I was as idealistic as you are today. I really thought we had a gender blind meritocracy. Took several years before my mentor pulled me aside and said look what's happening here, and here, and here. The capable women are leaving this part of the organization, they're not advancing there, and when it comes to the subjective measurements of leadership skill equal results aren't as valued in this third place. Despite the fact that the % of women entering the engineering work force is lower now than it was 30 years ago, I truly hope that the idealism of people entering the workforce today is the reality that generation experiences between now and 2050.

First, get over yourself. You assume, incorrectly, that everyone is foolish, young and idealistic. We are not. You were fresh out of school in the 80's? Good for you, class of 87 here. I understand the way the world works just fine. My beef is with the double standard presented by woman. You do not get to demand to be treated like equals then get cutsie, bat eyelashes and simper about being feminine.

I have nothing but respect for people (not gender specific) that maintain their integrity and are true to themselves. Honestly, though I am fairly certain you aren't trying to, you are coming across as holier than thou and hypocritical.

Second, your perception and conclusions are not the end all be all of reality. The reality of the situation is, there are times when woman have a legitimate beef. There are also times when they play the victim card. I am sad about the former, but I abhor the latter.

But it is useless to argue the point. Since you are obviously going to spin it the way you want to maintain your stance.

edit: underlined "seen" for clarity

I don't understand what part of that is a either "spin" or a "stance".

I got black-balled at work during the early 80's by 2 other women managers when I point blank refused to agree to hire only women because they were women. I hire based on competence, integrity, qualifications, intelligence, etcetera, whether someone was male, female or an android from another planet. To do otherwise would have been, there's that word again, stupid. I could go on and talk about my experiences in over 30+ years and other cases where real problems existed. There's no point; playing a 'victim' turns my stomach. With the exception of those two other women, luckily, most of the other women I have ever worked with, and admired, have never felt the need to "be cutsie". Maybe because I neither cultivate relationships with anyone of any gender that rely on manipulation, etcetera, nor do I tolerate it. Maybe because my mother raised me that way.

If you don't believe that situations still exist in companies in America where women have to work harder to be seen as equal, all the way up through the boardroom, then nothing anyone says here matters. It's sad those still exist. Most of the women in those positions, are there by choice, understanding the trade-offs and demands. Just like the men.

This post is not directed at you, Peo, although it is based on your quote. It is there for clarification. Period.

And I'm sorry to have derailed the thread as well.

Let's get back to talking about how GC and/or his manager leaving could improve things with the game.....

Good point. I don't have a lot of experience (at least in the work world) with people who use feminine wiles to manipulate the men around them. I'm sorry you do.

The *only* point I'm trying to make is that in senior management, where life isn't fair and there are always half a dozen people competing to take your job from you, and whether you get to keep your job or lose it depends on subjective judgments of those above you about whether someone from the bench can do better than you're doing, lots of people lose, never understand why, and play the race/gender/religion/old-boys-club card. Nonsense. You just got cut from the team, or never made the cut to get into the majors. Deal with it.

Note however that women are historically and statistically at a disadvantage in those subjective judgments. Ghostcrawler and his next 3 levels of management all deserve a lot of scrutiny of their performance, and probably have to spend a lot of their time selling themselves upward, just to stay in their jobs. A female has far less chance of surviving that scrutiny than a male. So a female who survived long enough to have one of those jobs is extremely unlikely to have acted as stupidly as Ghostcrawler and his bosses over the last 3 years.

This is about cold, brutal reality. You raise another part of cold, brutal reality, that there are females who (unethically in my opinion) manipulate the males above them in various ways. Nothing holy about any of it.
