Subject: New to DAoC ... anyone out there?
Hello DAoC'ers!

I was quite excited when I saw the 10th anniversary video Mythic put together and decided to give it another go .. I have been away for around 9 years so I am pretty much a new player at this point.

I loged into Gaheris and couldnt find anyone ... which was rather disheartening. I play on west coast time, it was around 7pm and couldnt find a soul.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to make it as a new player on Gaheris who is unwilling to run a second account to use a "buffbot" (I think thats what you guys are calling them)

Also what class arch-types are in demand ... I am assuming either tank or healer and am having a hard time deciding which one I will enjoy more ... help me tip the scales happy

Luckily, it is easier than ever for a non botted player to get going.

The tutorial will get you started, and even better the rewards as you quest from 1-35 will keep you very close to capped on the non toa stats and skills. You'll get a couple of mounts, a merchant summoning stone, and about a plat or so by the time you are 35 doing the questline. From there look into a guild (heck you could look sooner if you want honestly always nce to have someone to blah blah at while leveling) and also do tasks, or task dungeons, or other quests, or just grind till you hit 45. Then it is time to visit CV where you can get to 50 in quick measure. As you level from 35-50 the borderkeeps have merchants that sell gear to get you from 35-49.

A good starting class that is always welcome on almost every raid is the rejuve/enhance heretic. They have hefty dps and can toss a heal now and again.

Archers are also a good solo class to level, as are friars, vamps are good but some people hate them and they are not considered useful in raids (though they rarely have their claw damage resisted, which seems a useful dps skill to me)

Pent is right.. start with a tic (friar is good too but tic's are much more popular fer groups)

Then make one spec buffer (druid and cleric seem to be more popular than shammy due to ease of making endo pots), one tank and one pbaoe.. after that would recommend a thuergist (earth fer gaheris).

When exploring new areas I use my archer (any will do but ranger or scout are better fer pve imho than the hunter) with high enough stealth to sneak past higher level common mobs I don't feel like killing.

Have fun and hope to see ya out there happy

Pentegarn, thanks for the info!

So far I made a paladin (figured tanks might be needed at some point) and am just cruising through the levels (played about 3 hours so far and am almost level 20)

I tried to play a Heretic and kinda got stomped on (compared to the paladin anyhow). It seemed to me that the only decent damage skill they had was useless if you were soloing and had to take any kind of damage and loose concentration on the spell. Does this improve with level at all?

At what point do you think I will start seeing people? This place is totally devoid of people at the moment, which kinda concerns me sad

BTW is your avatar from that movie "The Last Dragon"?

I will answer the most important question first. Yes my avatar is Sho'Nuff

With a tic, you need to pull from max range, and make very sure you go full enhance and the rest rejuve. Without those spec buffs you are like paper. With them you have plate equivalent defense.

The people tend to all hang out in Labby and frontiers honestly, the trip to 50 is a lonely one these days. I really suggest you find a guild. You may not see bodies on your screen, but you will at least then see chatter, which does cut into the monotony of soloing.

This I found out the hard way .. after dying several times on noobie island (so embarising)I have been putting all my points into Rejuve for the Focus DPS spells .. so I will switch it around to Enhance as main, and rejuve as secondary. Any need for a weapon style? Looks like the flex weapon style has some nice life steal attacks.

The only guild invite i have gotten so far is from some weirdo named Commanderjobo or something like that .. and he just kept asking me if I was a girl ... very creepy!

If you need a guild LM can invite you, you seem OK, just do a /who LM and ask for me, likely it is me you will contact.

I advise going crush instead of flex, and as for melee styles your champ levels will cover those at 50 and just auto swing will finish off mobs other than that on the way to 50

Also, never listen to anything Password says, he is a creature devoted to chaos and misery. Just ignore anything he says in regards to the game as his advice is designed to mess your toon up.

To OT ... I am also PST, but I don't play until 9:30ish pm ... and I play until 2am.

So those times might not work for you, but if you are on, I would level with you. Most of my toon names start with "Mykk"

Generally speaking, the classes I would make for Gaheris, were I to start over:
Enchanter
Armsman
Druid
Warden
Theurgist

Probably all I would really need, at the end of the day. Almost everything beyond that is either situational, for fun, or not necessary. Then again, I'm not a big fan of solo'ing, I'd rather join a group than solo if I was playing a single character. That said, I'm known for botting, and have for years, so I'm the wrong person to ask.

I've always believed you need to play what you love first and foremost.

As a recent returnee after 4 years absence, I get more play time from my tic, valk and cleric/druids.

I have alts from 10-50 and play late hours most evenings. Do a /who Le Pacte...I never mind swapping alts if you need help or groupage. You will see more folks as you level up, too. Just keep the faith.

Kudos on all of you who support and extend understanding to him. Mental Health issues are a huge stigma to bare for anyone, and a little more compassion from anyone is a huge boon to the Mentally Ill.

I know there are other people in the community with problems as well, and making it public isn't always easy for everyone. Maybe we could all learn to pause and consider if someone is a little off before we just assume they are being obnoxious or rude, myself included.

i think job is actually robbie's alternate avatar in the gaheris community where he gets to enjoy himself acting as if he were on drugs.

i of course would commend this action

It is a shame that peeps don't recognize the value of a menty - I play one almost exclusively and with a level 54 Corrupted Deathpriest rock in laby land.

I can consistantly hold a lvl 54 pet, at 12L6 with no problem, hoping that if and when i get the 2000 million rps ( :} )needed to make RR13 I can hold a lvl 55 for a good length of time.

if you need any leveling help let me know I run 3 toons and can get you up fairly quick.

A side note a slam tic is really useless, slam time was reduced, just go 50 enhance and like 49 rejuv rest in crush, mainly for the blood stained hammer. I have a tic tic valk trio that is a lot of fun, but tic is one of my favorite solo toons. Thing is you really need to play it as a caster. Also depending on the mobs you are fighting if they like to cast or shoot at you, you have an uninteruptable spell does a little less damage but still ramps up and kills mobs well.

I run varied toons but just ask for Rehtul in Deadly Intentions guild.

Kiraniri(aka Rehtul and others)

Monday evenings (usually around 1830-1900 Central), there's at least a group if not a BG running around New Frontiers. Try giving a /region shout out in NF. And of course, ask politely. Friday evenings (again starting around 1830 Central) there's usually a public BG forming in NF. Usually led by Aquilonia (Warrior princess).

If you are still looking for a guild, there are several good guilds on Gaheris: Legendary Mercs are definitely one.

Now: What's this "slam tic" nonsense? happy
As mentioned elsewhere, max your Enhancement and Rejuv (50-50). My tic, Fraydon also has Flex (25) and rest in Shield (13). Add a range macro (/macro range /groundset 1400). When it's under the feet of your target, you should be Just Right. Then practice on blues with the various damage spells. There's shouldn't be much left of one by the time it gets to you. Some (Flex) melee to finish it off. Rinse and repeat. Fray has no problem with a moderate group of orange and yellow, or even a handful of reds.
And reading Rehtul(Kiraniri), reminds me, the tic's uninterruptible is unbelievable against a ranged mob (archer, caster). You'll kill them long before they can kill you. Once again, a tic is a caster that just happens to have fairly decent combat as well.

Regardless of realm and class, the armor you get doing the quests will do very nicely as you level up. Do them in the Tutorial up thru level 10, then let the quests lead you to the subsequent training towns. You will level very quickly. Quest weapons; not so great.
However: The new Pictish Invasion camps http://vnboards.ign.com/daoc_general_board/b5176/115964946/p1/?20 give good weapons. They can also be sold to merchants for good cash. If you have a blue weapon, find an appropriate camp, pull solo Picts from a distance -- be warned, given a chance, they will call for help. You want one far enough the camp won't hear them. Farm until you get the yellow weapon (and shield?) you want.

Welcome back.

Hey gang,

I - too am seeking a new guild that's PvE heavy. Moving to Gaheris.

Are Rangers or Nightshades viable in PvE? for raiding?

A lot of people will tell you which archer is better, but honestly all 3 are very good for solo'n. Archers also have a few raid encounters where they shine (like the named griffon in TG).

Gank classes like the nightshade are the most gimped in pve, mainly due to the restealth and poison reapply timer. The fact that mobs seem to have an overated sixth sense is very frustrating while trying to stealth in pve too. I'm not saying they are useless, but you definitely will have to fiddle with the spec and playstyle and still probably be lagging compared to other classes.

I have a shadowzerker that does well, but he becomes a headache fast when I'm spoiled by so many other classes that can kill so much faster. I still like him though.

Excellent. Maybe I'll try a bain.

Are there any specific classes that are needed in raids but aren't actively played?

To be honest, most of the player base here have all that is needed for raiding, experience means lots of time played and lots of time played breeds a ton of alts.

So the bad news is that in order to really have a good variety of toons for raiding, you will need about 3+ toons that are needed on raids (tanks, thugs, tics, heal/buff spec healy types, pbaoe, and so on)

The good news is a 50 these days takes about 8 hours of solid playing time. (Which is really not too much at all, 3-4 nights after work and you are there) Then the grind of farming scales, glass, and seals to get yourself ready (again much easier nowadays than it was once upon a time) so if you want to have a few toons that are good for filling in that needed roll, pick 3 you like and get them to 50.

In my opinion, Tics, bains, and thugs are the way to go for a starting out player who wants a decent stable of raid toons that are easy to solo to 50. They are all less reliant on the perfect template (tics and bains don't need dex or casting speed really, it is nice, but they can get away without templating either and still be quite effective, while thugs really just need power pool, dex, hits and casting speed and they are ready to spam their pets at everything they see) So you can make a functional starter template then slowly upgrade it as you raid.

I'm thinking of rolling a Friar today.
