Subject: 4.3 Guild Leader MIA Feature
With the introduction of patch 4.3, guilds will have more control over their leadership in cases where the leader goes MIA. After 30 days have passed, guild leadership will be able to be passed to a high-ranking and active individual to help continue cultivating a guild’s progression.

With the introduction of this feature, customer support will no longer intervene in guild leadership disputes. The matters of leadership and guild organization are meant for the guild to discuss and arrange, and we want to stress that leadership decisions should be made after thoughtful contemplation for and by those involved.

--------------------

I have to say this feature has pretty much sealed the deal for me. I will probably never return to Azeroth for any reason. I had a small guild with a few random players in it. It served no real purpose accept storage, casual guild leveling and communication.

The patch kicks in and I received no warning, no message at all about someone being able to take over my guild. I checked my battle.net account and my email address is correct and current. I also checked my "All" and "Spam" email folders, nothing.

In short I have lost all the extra storage that I purchased, the items contained within and 15,000 in gold.

Dirty pool Blizzard.

Yeah, the guilds shouldn't be able to be passed if there was no progression that was lost. Gah!

If you're gone for 30+ days you don't deserve to be a guild leader.

I just had my five minute hissy fit on the support forums. Obviously they don't give two craps about my little casual bank guild.

Consider me the 1,500,001 sub they have lost this year.

You cared so much about the guild that you were gone for more than 30 days.

Got it.

Then he/she deserves to lose their guild. Sorry, I feel this is a good change.

I auto lost it to some nub that does not even play.

The feature says it will send you notification and it does not. I know how to check a spam folder and a all mail folder. I receieved no notification at all.

This was not a raiding guild. This was not an RP guild. This was not a PVP guild.

This was a guild with a few random people in it. That's only purpose was to serve as a casual means for those people to have a few guild lvls. It was also my alternate banking space.

I'm not sure how I don't deserve to be a leader of that. Retarded. rolling_eyes

Well the person got the GM position, so they obviously play more than you. Absentee guild leaders aren't leaders. They're burdens.

Maybe next time you'll respect your position and play your role the way you should have.

I'm with you Jyiiga.

1) There should have been some type of notification about this feature being released prior to them releasing it.
2) You should have been notified prior to losing your guild with all of it's contents.

What really sucks is they'll more then likely not give it back to you.

Well thanks.

It is already a done deal at this point. It turned into a nice little explosion. At this point the guild bank (not much to it, it was for these people to trade mats around) has been looted and everyone has been kicked. An active members has put in tickets to try and get control of it, since it went to a person that does not actually play.

In short the feature caused more drama and heart-ache than just leaving it alone. A few of them went and supported me on the official forums and at least one player, who was fairly active is extremely upset. Upset enough to want to quit.

Great feature huh Arc?

In the end all this did was implode my little fun guild and drive people away from the game.

So let me get this straight lol...

You're bitching about losing your guild, but you weren't anything more than an occasional customer to its bank.

Do you even read what you type?

You have nothing to stand on here, you lost what you didn't respect as yours.

BOOM ROASTED

You were not involved and do not know what you are talking about.

I am (was) a member of the guild and know completely what I am talking about. I speak as the person who had the most current XP, etc. in that guild.

Jyigga was one of several people who built and leveled that guild with time, effort and money.

The guild was taken over by a noob who contributed literally 0 XP for the sole reason that they were lucky enough to be the first to log in at a certain time. (In the 17 hours between my last log-ins.)

Blizzard's own stated policy in this "usurping" was not followed.

The outcome is inequitable and unjust. Blizzard does not care about keeping guilds alive. It cares about forcing people to pay to log in once a month as WoW dies. That is all this is about. That is why it, and its house slaves, are happy with the outcome. It will keep someone, anyone, subscribing, even though the guild would be better off dead and now essentially is anyway.

It was mine. Simple as that.

I took the time to find a few people to make it.

I set up fun little rank structure and allowed people to pick a title that fit them.

I spent the coin to purchase bank slots for myself. I even had bank slots set up for the casual members to trade crafting materials back and forth.

I had 15,000 coin in the bank that allowed those casual players to do repairs.

Then it was taken away since I do not stare at patch notes every time they come down the pipe. I received no warning about the transfer (and a blue confirmed that I should have).

The guild is now void of life, cleaned out and effectively dead.

I'm sorry you fail to see the problem with this system.

So the only "issue" here is somebody who you feel contributed nothing got the guild instead of you.

You sound as bad as Jyiiga. Does ANYBODY take responsibility for their actions (or lack thereof) anymore?

It wasn't a guild, it was your alternate bank.

Only thing I fail to see is how you can bitch about it. It was your fault.

My actions were keeping a guild alive by putting 19.5 million XP into it up through this very day, and maintaining it in various other ways.

Your actions are ranting ignorantly and pretending that debate is about "winning" rather than truth.

If you really believed in taking responsibility for your actions, you would be apologizing for speaking viciously and ignorantly.

Jyiiga don't listen to Arcilite I. He has to be trolling.
There is no reason why you should lose a guild unless there was progression going on and/or your being absent was slowing down the guild in some way. which it obviously wasn't. You are 100% in the right on this.

There is a larger issue here about companies failing to recognize that entities created by players are at the very least mostly ours, not solely theirs. I suspect there will be an intellectual property revolution over this in time.

As it is, Blizzard is, like all who lean towards the fascist, trumpeting rules over justice--and then not even following its own rules. The lack of notice was absurd.

My job involves intense engagement with "real life" (which includes corporate behavior, as well-informed adults are aware) and as part of it, I am paid for voicing my opinions on social and economic issues. I have saved people's homes, altered major government policies and had many other real-world effects. My life is quite full and satisfying, and I not only have clues, but answers for which I am rightly lauded for providing.

What is your contribution to planet Earth, aside from trolling ignorantly, proposing faux libertarianism, and being a "personal responsibility" hypocrite? By which I mean, the answer is obvious and you sadly wish to engage in combat not to reveal truth but merely to fill deficiencies in your existence.

My contributions to planet Earth consist of environmental work, social work, spiritual outreach, community outreach, addiction counseling and letting people on VN know when they're in the wrong.

Perhaps Blizzard doesn't like people making guilds just to use the guild bank feature, but I know tons of people that do, and to lose your stuff because you are gone for a break and didn't know about a new feature, kinda sucks.

Note to self: Boot out guildies who I don't want to steal my guild when I go play Star Wars in a few weeks. I spent the time to gather all the signatures way back in the day and named it the perfect name and have been guild leader for what... 6 years now? We only PVP in this guild but we aren't a PVP guild per se. and there is zero progression that goes on. There would be zero reason for anyone else to own my guild. If this happened to me I would quit so fast. I am so mad about it that I am about to quit just because it happened to you! lol

Holding the GL position in an absentee manner is nothing short of rude and inconsiderate.

The solution to this is:

Right after you cancel your sub, boot everyone from the guild, period.

I find it short-sighted, since almost everyone plays cyclically, and a lot of people returned to WoW after breaks over the years. To me, it smacks of desperation from a once dominant (and thus lazy) company now leaking subscribers: try to bully you into playing rather than letting you come back on your own terms. It is notable that they made guild usurping much easier in the latest patch, which also includes the "transmogrification" feature that users demanded for years, other games did, and Blizzard is only now offering as its subscriber base drops.

Incidentally, this guild was not just a bank, but a c. 250-member event with a lot of creativity going on. It was on the decline, but most things in WoW are.

Personally I find manual intervention better suited so someone is actually evaluating the facts instead of just putting a timer on all situations, but I suppose that costs money.

So was it a handful of people who barely play or a 250-member active guild?

It's almost like....the "facts" are changing as this story goes along.

That is on the inflated side. It had plenty of people in it that had not logged in in months. It was as I stated, a casual guild (and probably mostly alts). At the time of its untimely death it probably had around 10-15 semi active players.

Doesn't matter now. It is gone and everyone is kicked. -shrug-

EDIT - I was one of those, never kick anyone Guild Leaders. No reason to since it was not for progression.

I find it a little hard to have sympathy for someone who was GL and gone from the game for 30 days straight, especially when this feature was public knowledge. However I do think that it sucks that someone just ransacked the whole guild and bailed. 15k gold sucks, but honestly it can be regained fairly easily. Chalk up the lessons learned and move on.

Reminds me of when someone lost a villa in AC, back when they were in extremely high demand. As soon as it was available to be purchased inevitably someone else would come along, purchase it and 9/10 times keep most of the stuff. It always generated a lot of controversy about whether the stuff should be returned, who was wrong and who was right, yadda yadda yadda . .

But frankly, the best way to deal with most situations like this is to prevent it from occuring in the first place.

I still think that the good features of GL MIA outweight the bad, but that maybe some more safeguards should be in place (and working)

Years ago in my Shadowbane days our guild leader made off with a crapton of stuff and eBayed it for $2000 USD. I wouldn't sweat a little gold in WoW.

I'm gonna guess that Ghostcrawler had a hand in approving this "feature." I can't imagine anyone else would envision a system where GM could just randomly get handed to the next person to log in without a vote of active members or a petition of some sort. I can imagine lots of other ways to "leave it up to the players" without playing virtual pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey.

Rule #1: don't share your banking guild with ANYONE.
If I ever lose leadership of my own bank guild... the leadership will go to another of my toons tongue

I agree with you there's something wrong though: the delay should have started the day the feature was implemented.

Thirty days is way too short of a time, some people take 30 day vacations every year. I am sure that even with the human element the game used to have they wouldn't of transferred after just 30 days so their implementation was off the mark.

But for some perspective was a small crappy guild in a game which you weren't playing so who cares.

I feel worse for the others, the people that were still playing that have lost their guild. I think it is lame, but I can deal.

As much as I agree with this feature, the 30 days should have started when patch 4.3 went live and shouldnt have used prior absentee time to auto kick.

If they were still playing then likely they logged in sometime over the past month or so, though. Yes it sucks and probably could have been implemented better, but people who are actively playing should not be affected at all really.

I support the original poster for being upset and what was obviously a well-intended feature that got abused. Of course, the game seems to have a history of good ideas that are abused by that portion of the player-base that exists to cause mayhem and grief.

As already pointed out here, if it is primarily intended as a banking guild, then don't have anybody in it you don't know and trust. It's not uncommon to see someone selling a guild in trade, and it can be quite a bargain ... especially if the guild name is not repulsive. Storage in the game is a pain in the behind, especially if you have several "gathering" toons, along with bunches of old armor or other items you might hold onto for various reasons.
