"adding Twitter as a search bar option, tab loading tweaks, and the default disabling of addons installed by third-parties."

I'm overwhelmed! Its been a long time since we saw this big an update. Good thing they upgraded the major version.

They moved to a different release schedule so more "major" releases (aka N+1.0). Really does not change much, just means we will be on firefox version 20 much faster then previous old schedules.

They basically realized that fractional point releases don't get a lot of press so they are going with lots of little "big" releases that push the main number forward but don't offer anything new.

Hopefully 8.0 fixes the intermittent freezing issue experienced by some (including me) with 6.x and 7.x.

7 was causing weird load issues on some of the sites I frequent. I did the tweaks to kill the html5 and whatnot but it was still choking up on some things. I always have multiple browsers up for testing and whatnot but I like to do all my browsing (besides the testing or special purpose stuff) in one.

I had problems with Firefox 7 intermittently freezing up. And during that time Sync was messed up. I went back to Firefox 6 and all was fine again (even with Sync on). I never went back to version 7, so don't know if Sync getting fixed would have resolved the freezing issue for me with version 7.

I figured version 6 was still working great and with the 6 week release schedule, I wouldn't need to wait long for version 8, so I did wait.

Running 8 now. So far after a few hours, I haven't had any weird issues or freezing.

IIRC in 7 they messed up the Sync feature that allowed them to ask browsers to stop slamming their servers. So sync was messed up in 7, just not the way you might think. 6 just said "Oh, you don't want me to bother you? Okay.. ;("

If you get the freezing up issue this fixes it.

Need to do both of these.

Type about:config into your address bar, accept the warning, type in the Filter box network.http.max-connections

Then double click on the network.http.max-connections setting and
change the value to 32 (default was set to 256 from FF version 6.0
upwards).

follow the instructions here

^

Depends on what is causing it. I was able to reproduce a bug to push the amount of memory Firefox uses to almost 2GB. I stopped at that point but doubtless could have gone further. Not sure if it was something wrong on Amazons end, or FF but its suspect happy

I had tried those, and it didn't work. My freezing wasn't at 'regular' intervals, though. There didn't seem to be a pattern to it. Moot point though, since there was a change in 8 which removes or alters the cause of the freezing entirely. Working fine so far.

That feature was broken in 6 too. Which is why I was puzzled why Firefox 7 seemed to have freeze up issues and not Firefox 6. Even when I turned off Sync I still had Firefox 7 freezing up, which is probably why I never reinstalled it even after they fixed Sync.

Which is as it should be but rarely is. You shouldn't have to relearn a piece of software just because it has been updated.

I think you are missing his point. If nothing has changed, does it really merit a major version change? Answer: only until its "higher" than chrome or ie!

Meaningless if you do not use Twitter.
