1up.com posted:
World of Warcraft fans are some of the most rabid around, and the opportunity to own one of the original server blades that housed the game's many realms will be an exciting proposition for many of them. The opportunity to bid on one of these items should be good enough, but to make things even better, a worthy charity will be benefiting from the money they bring in.

About 2,000 original server blades will be auctioned off on eBay beginning on October 17. This will continue through November 14, with the net proceeds going to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

These servers are no longer in use; WoW's infrastructure has been upgraded since it first launched in 2004. They are HP ProLiant servers that were used to host hundreds of realms for North America and Europe. Each one comes inside a windowed case with the WoW logo and a plaque signed by the WoW development team.

"World of Warcraft realms are like the virtual neighborhoods of the game's community -- they contain the spaces where millions of players have made friendships, forged friendly rivalries, and created lasting memories," said Blizzard CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime. "Each winner in this auction will own a small monument to those collective experiences. The best part is that this auction benefits a great charity doing tremendous work in helping children from the U.S. and around the world."

More details are available on eBay, where you can sign up for an email reminder and see which weeks specific realms will be auctioned off.

Actually, if you are in anyway interested in memorabillia, it is a great idea... I wouldn't buy that kind of thing to line someone's pockets, but given the contribution goes to charity it would allow me to buy something I want and contribute to a 'cause' (regardless as to whether it is a particularly close to my own interests).

But it's like...........a hunk of metal with a WoW logo box around it.

I'm all for memorabilia, but I don't see a non-descriptive piece of metal very interesting. (just my opinion!)

Slam a badass figure in the box with the Dev signatures and now we're talking. tongue

I think the point was, all the money goes to charity, I know that is a hard concept for people, but that is where a you take your money and give it to someone less fortunate, you are getting in return an old server blade, in the world of charity you don't have to get ANYTHING back, except the feeling that you have done a good thing. However if you are the techie type this would be a really cool peice of art to hang in your mancave, gameroom, garage bar, server room type area and you would get that warm an fuzzy knowing that you helped someone. I am sure they are going to auction off at more than I can afford so I will have to stick to my $20.00 donations to local charities.

You need to seriously learn to read.

The net proceeds go to charity, not all.

Money is still going to a charity that otherwise would of had less money going to it if they had not decided to auction the server blades off.

1. I am not new here I have been on here for over 2 years, I just don't feel the need to post a reply to everything.

2. You are right is is just the net proceeds and not all, but that is still better than NONE going to charity and ALL of it going back into the coffers at Blizzard. I would like to see how much this does raise for charity. Not that is matters St. Judes is a very worthwhile cause so I am glad to see they are doing something even remotely "good" with any part of the proceeds.

Worthless piece of junk, worth nothing, they sell it for 1000 and donate $50.00 to charity, THEY STILL MAKE $950.

Don't kid yourself, they are doing this to make money, not to be world leader. If you believe otherwise you are a freaking idiot and are part of why the world sucks. I tell you what, I will come to your house, sell your senile grandmother a vintage pet rock for $800.00 and donate my net proceeds to charity. Does that make me a saint, no it makes me a shyster who takes advantage of dumb people.

Net proceeds is typically the selling value of the item minus transaction costs (in this case Ebay's fees and shipping). I'm not particularly fond of Blizzard, but even my tinfoil hat isn't big enough to believe that Blizzard keeps most of the money from the sale. Most will go to charity and they will get another line item to write off on their charitable givings for their corporate tax.

It's for a good cause even if it's for a good cause to make their book's look better.

I spend 5x what these are going for on a parking spot... because it goes to a charity I like. Charity results in people owning things they really couldn't care less about all the time.

That all said, someone will spend a ridiculous amount on one just because they are a fanboy and think it makes them special :P

Rage less, think more?

From a PR standpoint, it would be very bad if they profited themselves off of this deal. Why risk such over a rather paltry amount of money? Even "if" they did make money themeselves, at least St. Judes is getting SOMETHING that otherwise they would NOT of gotten. Plus some game enthusiasts gets to have a novelty item that they can chat over with their friends.

It is really win-win for everyone involved.
