I started to lose the desire to play hard core after Burning Crusade.

What really killed it was the constant skill point wipes in conjunction with having to relearn how to play my character every 2-3 months.

What killed WoW for you?

I'm still waiting for something to kill WoW for me, but it hasn't happened yet.

It might be SW:ToR as many of my guildies are talking about moving to it. Not sure I'd continue playing WoW if I had nobody left to play with.

The lack of adding new innovative game feature for people to see advancement in their characters once Cata came out. With them deciding to go back to a more hardcore model without introducing something else for players to at end game besides 5 mans/raids and PVP.

WoW could benefit greatly if it had a Skirmish like system in play similar to the one found in LOTRO. I also the biggest mistake for Cata was the removal of the Path of the Titans system. This then made archeology a completely useless secondary profession because the other two at least served the purpose for your character, healing and crafting good buff foods.

There is nothing right now, unless the next expansion brings some serious changes, that will see me return to WoW. I will be playing TOR for a bit and then move onto GW2.

This for the most part. It's gotten better a little bit since 4.0 but not much, although if they can implement the new raid with a casual version the right way then my desire to play will probably increase. Regardless of everything though, as soon as GW2 is released I'm gone.

Cat expansion was the final nail.

Didn't have a problem with how hard things had gotten, just how "stupid". (see: railcart questing, cut scenes, talent trees, etcetera.)

That's 2 games now that have been killed for us by the devs releasing an expansion starting with those 3 letters. (see: DAoC Catacombs which also changed their persistent world/gameplay.)

Currently playing Rift and enjoying the community there as well as devs that seem to be responsive in a measured way. I'll admit the game isn't as compelling as WoW was many years ago. The devs there at least seem (A) in touch (B) intelligent (C) concerned about their customer's experience.

Sadly, I cannot say the same about the current crew at Blizzard.

Actually, yes I did. However, I was extremely vocal both on the VN board and elsewhere (VCs,etc), about the debacle it created and concerns about the future of the game (which were obvious).

WoW still has several years left. Only question is, what will the quality be like? I honestly think they should add live events and do something more with the pvp side.

But for me, Cata ruined WoW, though I may resub just to play the DW raid.

They need to break from the expansion same ol' same ol' cycle. It might take more than a million lost players to make that happen, though, especially with an unnamed MMO in the works.

"What killed WoW for you?"

Age mainly, just like EQ1 it eventually lost the thrill after several years. Longer and longer breaks until I just didn't feel like going back ever.

The direction changes in CATA certainly contributed to the burn out, especially the instanced questing for me. Not being able to quest together with someone in the area just because they were in a different phase resulting in I couldn't even see them as we crossed in/out of different land blocks or whatever. It was tolerable in the starting areas for Worgen/DK but I found it far too annoying past that.

But still looking forward to trying their next MMORPG unless it turns out to have too much of the stuff I don't like such as instancing, micro-transactions, etc which may well be the case.

Age is hurting WoW more than anything else. Games are meant to be enjoyed, played until they are mastered, then you move on. I think the expectation for the same game to remain compelling and exciting for 10 years is unrealistic.

WoW is still a great game. One of the greatest and most fun I have ever played. Naysayers that are honest with themselves will agree that was true for them at one point as well.

Just smile sadly and move on when you are done... or you can stay on this forum and bitch about how the game isn't fun for you anymore, but even those bitter folks seem to be gone now.

As for WoW's future, it will be around for a long time to come. People are still playing EQ and Asheron's Call for gods sake. How can you even imagine that WoW is going anywhere with so many paying customers left?

This board is dying a slow and painful death though. I blame the aforementioned naysayers personally. Most people who want to discuss matters regarding WoW have moved on to a less negative venue. I'm only here kicking around tumbleweeds because I'm bored today. I don't play WoW or follow this board much anymore.

I will be back to Blizzard for Diablo 3 though. grin

Age of the game and Cata.

I initially liked Cata and the content it provided. But it grew old fast and just didn't provide enough content(if any really) that was different from the norm. It was disheartening to see them remove potential side-advancement for characters outside of the gear treadmill. Then taking the easy route and proceeding to dumb down a lot of the important game mechanics (Hello Talent Trees), instead of fixing the the flaws.

If they ever show that they care about freshening up the game (reworking landscapes for re-rolls doesn't count). Trying some actual innovation for once that many other new MMO's are doing. ( I don't mean copy what the new companies are doing) I wouldn't hesitate to give the game a second chance.

I don't see them doing anything worth a mention before more interesting games come out. I'm sure the next expansion will tout some new and nifty things (provided ANYONE has a brain left on the WoW team). But I won't hold my breath that they won't just remove it before the expansion (Titan advancement), due to time constraints or whatever the excuse will be.

peace

Just got bored with MMORPG game play and the community in general, probably because I just got too old for the genre. Really had nothing to do with WoW itself.

Pretty much this for me, except I'm not playing again, but still. I'm not going to buy Diablo 3, have never played other MMOs...I guess I'll just say that WoW is a diversion for me, and a time-killer. Not much more than that though.

Nothing killed WoW for me. I've been playing this game longer than anyone you know and still continue to play it and have fun with it. More people play this than every mmo combined (yes i'm pulling this out of my ass... but im pretty sure its true! grin ). It is still the most successful MMO ever. Sure a percentage of people have left. Those people that left are helping those of us that stayed. IE tons of awesome features coming soon. I encourage more of you to leave happy

The one thing I don't completely understand is why are "you people" still here on these forums when you aren't playing the game? It is impossible for you to stay on this forum for the "community"... so why then?

They can't be so intellectually bankrupt to not have come up with anything by now... At this point I honestly believe they are intentionally withholding innovation and neat/cool stuff for their new secret project game--and they're going to milk wow for as long as they can. The biggest recent thing I've seen announced is Transmogrification -- GG catching up to LOTRO.

The one thing I don't completely understand is why are "you people" still here on these forums when you aren't playing the game? It is impossible for you to stay on this forum for the "community"... so why then?

Because most of us are fans or x fans hypnotized
The thing I miss most about WoW is posting on the forums and its not worth paying a subscription for that is it ?

Wish I knew how to get the quote right as well ! cry

For me the problem is simpler.
Age is the primary reason.
However The indifference to balancing faction populations was another major problem that created all kinds of ripple effects.

They could have easily not let faction transfers occur to a faction with a higher population unless populations on any server was a 55-45% ratio or better.

How about putting in some RvR Lake type BGs and a New Frontier for sieges and such? Something new, damn.

Yeah.. then they could capitalize on how popular DAOC is!!!

And that's a bad thing?

Dont worry I will give my opinion anyways.
The PvP MMO is NOT a "niche" market, Mythic is just a "niche" company.

If you think they are losing subs now, just wait until GW2 and SWTOR come out. The numbers have only just started to drop on subs. Wait till people start getting the first wiff of dead servers and nobody to group with on off peak times. This kills a game exponentially.

Blizz just hasn't come up with anything new. Cata was the same old crap people DIDN'T ask for. A small amount of people complained it was too easy so they screwed the large % of the people who enjoyed being able to get gear semi-casually.

I would say try and steer the ship in the direction of PvP, but Blizz has shown us they have no clue whatsoever what good PvP truly is.

DAOC did PvP (more specifically RvR right with a 3rd realm) GW2 is attempting to do the same (we will see how well it goes, and I have my hopes) with no sub fee. In the end it's Blizz that is making all the money of course, because we all know how great of a run they have had, and there will always be WoW fans no matter how bad it gets just like any other game. I just question the quality of the game from here on out. I know I'm not paying a sub anymore.

My hope for Blizz is the next exp. to WoW is something fresh and exciting. If they release another Cata. lookalike it will likely be the nail in the actual money making coffin from what they are used to at nearly 11m subs or whatever it was up to.

I played WoW from vanilla to WotLK and loved the game even though it's PvP was still terribad. Tried Cata for a month and it was awful. I won't go back to the game until the next exp (might not even go back at that point), and if that fails it's pretty much a done deal for me and 3/4 of their subs more than likely. Lol even 1/4 of their subs will still bring in loads of cash I bet.
