After finding a working height map import tool [which I'm now maintaining], I've been spending some of my free time importing Dereth into Minecraft. Using a 3600x3600 height map, I have a pretty nicely working product. I'm not yet satisfied with the overall quality so won't be releasing it just yet. However, you can see my current product via this thread:

The above thumbnail link isn't working, it seems.

The thumbnails themselves are still visible on the Minecraft thread.

Larger versions of the images [though still less than full scale] may be found here: http://imgur.com/a/jR5sr

I'm estimating 4-6 weeks before I have a draft for release. It's not visible in those images, but the map is currently rather buggy. For example, the roads were paved with snow, rather than cobblestone, and the coastal areas are a mishmash of... a lot of materials. There's several hours of color map tweaking remaining. Beyond the draft release, there's further work to do: The colormap is only populating the uppermost visible layer for most regions. For example, Aerlinthe's obsidian areas in those images are in fact mostly exposed smooth stone in the game. Presently, I think the only option to remedy such will be to go through in creative mode and manually replace the inappropriate blocks.

Listos:

Draft should be ready in 4-6 weeks
Final: Unknown; it'll be quite a while.

I should also perhaps mention that I rebuilt Dryreach many months ago, and have most types of Aluvian buildings saved as MCEdit objects. The scale will be a bit off, though, between the map (1:10 scale vs AC) and the buildings (1.5:1 scale vs AC). The buildings are scaled that way so that they retain a similarity of appearance, within the constraints of vanilla Minecraft's cubic meter building blocks.

Just curious, why did you decide to scale it down? Wouldn't the sloping of terrain such as hills and whatnot be less intense with a scale closer to the original?

This is still [sporadically] being worked on. As stated, it will be finished. The ends of the term has been rougher than previously anticipated. Turned in a thesis draft yesterday, presented a minor project today, and have yet another project to finish over the coming week.

White Bunny:

The heightmaps are scaled down due to the extreme size a 1:1 recreation would result in. A single pixel in the heightmap import tool for Minecraft corresponds to a single Minecraft block - that is, 1 square meter.

The Asheron's Call height map is scaled far differently. To my recollection, the height map's 2041x2041 default dimensions correspond to approximately 255 square miles, or about 660 square kilometers. 2041 / 660 = ~0.3. Each pixel in the AC height map corresponds to roughly 300 square meters.

Scaling the heightmap such that each pixel is one square meter results in an image... which is quite unwieldy: 612,300x612,300 pixels. Even for a grey scale, that single image exceeds the file size typical image editing software can manage [it would be nearly a terrabyte].

Thus the used heightmap is scaled from 2041 to 3600, to better match the Minecraft scaling while remaining useable. To account for excessive "sharpness" in height or elevation changes, I performed a goodly bit of trial and error, adjusting image brightness and contrast until a reasonable approximation of the AC game world elevations was acquired.

One could split the map up into popular locations, as well as a full one later on if this is successful anyways.

Could relive the Yaraq starting Gharundim(or whatever) starting location, etc.

i specifically remember it taking me an hour and twenty minutes to run from the southern most tip to the northerm most tip of the landmass, with a 520 buffed run.  i might have been able to shave ~15 minutes off that with a better route

thats a big damn map

i wish current mmo's were that big

I have a draft at the 10% scale currently being finished. The roads I had set to import as cobblestone, but instead they came out as snow. I'm manually fixing this in Creative. I will not, however, be cleaning up other edges, nor will I be adding the buildings and such to towns - 10% scale is too small for faithful recreations.

I have, in the last few days, managed to get a 20% scale map that would not break the heightmapper. The heightmap I'm using did not scale up appropriately, however, so I will need to do a great deal of trial and error to have the terrain actually match up to Dereth. This will be quite time consuming: Each draft import of the 10% took roughly 1-2 hours. The single draft of the 20% took 11 hours to convert.

The 20% scale map appears to be large enough that cities could be rebuilt with acceptable accuracy.

Once I have finished fixing up the roads, I will update this post with a download link for the 10% scale map.
I will also attach my recreations of Dryreach [one is scaled to player height, the other such that the buildings are sized proportionately to one another].

I was going to be putting up a download link tonight, but that's not happening now. This is going to be delayed a bit.

12:42 AM - McIntire: As I was working on my Dereth in Minecraft map, finishing up the last of the roads
12:42 AM - McIntire: Minecraft decided, "This looks like a good spot for a snow biome!"
12:42 AM - McIntire: And thus my entire tropical coast became snow
12:43 AM - McIntire: I was able to reset the terrain generator so.. well, that area, at least, is not snow anymore. haven't visitied any others, but I'm hoping I reset the generator to no biomes.
12:43 AM - McIntire: aaand so i have a small continent worth of editing to do in MCEdit now, to clear off the existing snow fall, since it refuses to melt.
12:44 AM - McIntire: xD
