So it looks like the LCD TV I got 3 years or so ago conked out last night, getting slow refresh and white bars so since it's not under warranty it's going to cost more to fix than a new TV these days. Anyone have any experience with LED TVs? I haven't gone into a store to look at any yet, but what's the big thing (that isn't 3D)?

Local dimming. Where the backlight is split into a grid of individual backlights (maybe around 80-240), so you can have areas of the screen super bright and other areas super-dark, thus enabling higher contrast ratios, and until they get affordable OLEDs (where each individualpixel lights up an its own and thus can be turned all the way on or off) that's pretty much the best you're going to get. That's the big thing IMO, although some manufacturers have moved away from that, focusing on super-thinness and 3D (like Samsung, their B8500 model was the best LED picture you could get a couple of years ago, now I don't know that they even make a locally-dimmed display).

To get thinness and an approximation of local dimming some manufacturers are using edge-lit LEDs with light channels to try to recreated the backlit LED grid, but it's not as good. But better than a single uniform backlight I think.

My TV is like...15 years old? And still works great. It's a hurking beast but at least the kids won't pull it over on top of themselves.

Oh yes, sorry your TV has died. I hope you find a nice new one. I would suggest trying to pick one up at the bar.
