I'm partial to HTC so I'd get the Incredible. Pretty sure that all three run Android though and I don't think you'll be unhappy with any of them. No real reason to get the Droid X when the Droid X2 is an option.

If it's available you might look into the HTC Thunderbolt as well to get 4G as well.

There really is only one option on that list, and thats the Droid X2. Its the only somewhat future-proof superphone on that list due to the Tegra 2 Dual Core Processor. I love mine to death. Get around 2 days of battery life on it but be warned, it takes a few days for the battery to calibrate itself and its life will suck at first.

Just how bad do you need a smart phone right now?

Apple iPhone 5 with iOS 5 will be out early October.
Google Nexus Prime with Android 4.0 will also probably be coming sometime in October.

If you are gonna get locked into a 2 year contract with that phone, I might wait a couple months for the latest and greatest if you can. happy

To me the choice should be between Android or iOS and between buttonized keyboard or screen touch keyboard.

I will echo Speak, do you really really need a cell phone? If you income changes with the contracts and the early termination fees that cell phone can become a very expensive luxury.

It's so much fun though. happy

I imagine he's aware of the data plans required. Going from a feature phone to smart phone will raise your cell bill by $30 to $40 a month.

If you decide against a smart phone for some reason. There is always an Apple iPod Touch, you can run iOS applications. Similarly Samsung makes a Galaxy Player which let you run Android apps. Both small phone sized devices, pretty much running the same OS, but without calling or mobile internet abilities.

http://www.amazon.com/Apple-touch-Generation-NEWEST-MODEL/dp/B001FA1O18

Haaa... was going to post a link the the Galaxy Player but nobody seems to be selling it. Though I'm pretty sure the device launched months ago. Weird. It might be a Best Buy exclusive, their website is down (TouchPad is gone folks, stop hammering their site!).

Queue record heat wave for San Diego.

I have the droid X, and it's been great. The most recent system update seems a bit chunkier though. They did fix the photo time stamp issue though (it was recording in zulu with no option to change it).

The phones I listed I can get for free with a contract.. Even if new ones are on the way wouldnt it be months after that before you could get one for free? I know the Thunderbolt is 70$ with a contract right now.

The reason I am looking for a phone now is that I am out and about more than I was previously. And I realize that its going to be 80-130$ ( 130 if I get a 2 phone plan ) and yes that is a chunk of change. Another option is just a prepaid phone but I cant really find one that I fancy.

I have the HTC incredible. When I first got it after a few weeks I started having some major issues with it Auto rebooting while playing games. I did everything under the sun that was mentioned on different forums to get it to stop but nothing worked, app killers, anti virus, in fact when I took it in they said that the anti virus actually does more harm than good. I did a factory reset and still the same problem. I finally got verizon to replace it and I have had the new one for a few months now and it has worked great and I love it.

As someone has said before, just take the Droid X off the list if the X2 is an option, the X2 has a duel core processor and is a lot faster from what I hear. Its what I am going after when I get my next upgrade. So between the incredible 2 and Droid X2 thats a tough one. If you are into games and vid watching I would say go for the X2 just for the bigger screen. But if your looking for data speed over such things as games and vids I would say go for the incredible. 2, because I believe it is 4G but I could be wrong, where the X is not

Try typing on them if you plan to a lot. As much as I want the Droid X I cant stand using screen keyboard so I'm getting a Droid 2 with the real keys.

Rumor is Verizon isn't getting the Samsung Galaxy S II because they'll be getting exclusive launch of the the Samsung Nexus Prime, which arrives soon after the SGS2.

I have a hard time believing that Verizon would go for that, purely because of their policy of keeping bootloaders locked down so damn hard.

I picked up a droid 3. I converted over from a storm 2 9550 and have been an avid blackberry user since 2007. I miss RIM's messenger but I digress!

It is only 3G but I'm not a big downloader so it suits me. I have WiFi at home and I'm on a desktop at work so 4g is not a big deal to me. I'm of the mindset that 4g is a marketing ploy BUT I don't knock people for getting a phone with 4g either. I also prefer a physical keyboard with the option of on screen typing also. Plus seeing droid 1 phones kicking about, I figured the build was tried and true.

I love the slide out keyboard because you preserve the display when interacting with webpages when you are typing.

--Dual Core 1 gig.
--only 512 internal storage but again, that is not a deal breaker for me personally. (Micro SD card NOT inluded)
--1080p recording and 8mp camera. It is not the greatest optics but the HD makes up for it. Another issue I seem to find is that images seem to come out cold as if there is a little too much blue getting in.
--Front facing cam that you can face chat with through a 'fixed' version of skype.
--Front facing cam actually takes nice pictures of your mug if you're into that.
--Rooting now available for the phone.
--Dedicated number row so no more ALT button to type out numbers when using the full keyboard.
--qHD display.
--It is not too big but not too small either. I think it is a tad smaller than the droidx.

Accessories are catching up to the phone so don't expect anything out there besides Otterbox and Qmadix. I'm using the Qmadix and I like the feel of the case. Especially if you want a holster. Otterbox does not and is not planning to release a holstered version for the Droid 3. I work outside and I loved the defender case for my original 8830 blackberry.

Sorry for all the tangents thrown about. There are some decent reviews on the phone on youtube. If you come across a review that bashed the iPhone just turn it off and find another one.

It's 4 months late, but the Galaxy S II has finally been announced in the United States (pretty much everyone else has it already). Supposedly the carriers were not too interested in the phone and dragged their feet.

Really nothing surprising from the announcement today. AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile are getting the phone. Verizon is passing for something better coming about a month later.

The AT&T version is identical to the international version with a 4.27 inch screen. Sprint and T-Mobile however are getting a larger 4.52 inch version. And the T-Mobile version has more rounded corners than the Sprint one.

Sprint and AT&T announced their phones will be available September 16th and 18th. T-Mobile has not given an availability date yet (they aren't even trying to keep customers anymore).

http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/30/galaxy-s-ii-finally-lands-on-american-shores-for-sprint-t-mobil/

Verizon is skipping this silly late device though for something better. They somehow snagged an exclusive deal to launch the first Android 4.0 phone. It had been called the Samsung Nexus Prime for a while, but now we are being told the name is the Droid Prime. It's a little weird hearing "Samsung Droid", but Verizon owns that Droid name and now they are giving Samsung a chance with the name. But I'm a little confused now if this is still a "Nexus" phone, meaning it's Google development phone and gets updates first. Or it just happens to be the first Android 4.0 phone, but some other "Nexus" Android 4.0 phone comes later.

After being abandoned by Samsung with my Vibrant, I'm not too excited about buying another Samsung phone unless it's "Nexus" version.

Anyway the Droid Prime is coming in October, hopefully there will be more Android 4.0 phones launched soon too (especially if this isn't really a Nexus). So why anyone is buying an Android 2.3 phone in September is beyond me (unless it's free or really cheap).

It's not confirmed, but there is an educated guess that the T-Mobile version of the SGS2 may have a lesser Qualcomm processor inside rather than Samsung's Exynos. Conspicuously it was the only phone locked behind glass that could not be handled. And T-Mobile wanted a 42Mbps HSPA+ modem in their version, it seems only Qualcomm processor can provide this feature. The Exynos is bundled with an Intel 21Mbps HSPA+ modem.

So faster network speed versus faster processor. I might go with the faster processor if I were buying.

But it's still unconfirmed right now.
