Subject: Topic of the Week: Do you remember your first guild?

A few hours into the game, I was still running around outside of Mag Mel doing quests and killing mobs. I had no game currency, and the only gear I had was what I got at the start. It wasn't much. I didn't care though because I was enjoying the exploration of the game. I remember being attacked by some purple orb looking thing, and I was in trouble, when another player jumped in and rescued me. Not only did Downarend save me from impending doom, he invited me to join his group which had 4 or 5 other players of varying levels in it. We ran all over the area doing quests and exploring areas together, just killing mobs and having fun. We chatted amongst ourselves about general information like where we were from, our real names, game mechanics and tactics. Being a part of a group made killing mobs much easier, and we could go further into areas you couldn't go solo. It wasn't long before they all handed me items to dress and equip my blademaster. We had a great time together, and by the end of the night I was invited to join their guild Blades of Glory.

Playing DAOC just became a whole lot more enjoyable. I knew when I logged into the game, I'd have a group of people to join, a player base I'd get to know better. A community of sorts. We had a lot of fun in the upcoming days, helping each other develop game characters and bringing up alts. We did harder quests together that we couldn't do alone like the epic quests. We went on Master Level raids, Artifact raids, and helped each other with gear and advice. We became friends of sorts. Although we never met in real life, we developed a kinship. We learned things about each other, joked around and had a good time together.

Unfortunately Blades of Glory went the way of so many other guilds. As people grew other interests in the game, they moved to more established guilds suited to their play styles and needs, or they left the game altogether. When the servers clustered and moved to Ywain, it vanished completely.

This week,Topic of the Week wants to know about your first guild. Did you create your own or join an established guild, and is it still around?

If you have an idea for a topic you'd like to see, please drop me a line.

I remember the name of my first guild, I remember they PL'd us in the Barrows once. I remember little else about them. But I will tell you a story about why my friend and I are now shy about what guilds we joined because it all relates to the first guild he, his wife, and myself joined.

The guild was called Remnants. They consisted of a crapton of armsmen, and the three of us. Guild events were almost always centered around exploring the new SI zones. But as time passed it became quickly apparent that the GM wanted nothing to do with running his guild and saw my friend was willing to help out and took rather unfair advantage of him. The first few weeks, there were guild events every Friday and Saturday. The GM ran them, and basically he would have my friend heal while him and his 2 armsmen buddies chain pulled whatever place we were exploring. Soon though less and less of them showed up and more and more new peeps showed up expecting a Cleric to PL the guild. My friend was clever and could make do, but eventually he felt as the GM showed up less and less that being asked to GM a guild that he was not actually the GM of so the actual GM could have his cake (keeping remnants alive) and eat it too (GM joining other guilds with alts) was neither nice or fair. So within a few short months the three of us and a few others left Remnants and formed the guild Fides et Victus. If I am asked what my first guild technically is, I say Remnants, when I ask what my first good guild is I say Fides et Victus

I guess my first guild was a rather sore subject to me, sorry sad

Our first guild was Guardians of Valhalla on Bors. Hubby had a shammy and I had a healer. The guild was small but the people were great. Most members no longer play the game, but we all still keep in touch. We've "raised" each others kids, cried at funerals, rejoiced at weddings and had great fun together both in and out of the game. The friends I've made along the way is the best part about playing DAoC.
