Subject: What's in your bag?
I carry around a big Dell XPS gaming laptop backpack to work on other places and have it crammed with all my computer crap and gadgets. Started thinking about all the gadgets I carry around with me and how the backpack has been getting heavier these days. Figured I'd share and curious if others have their bags or backpacks of stuff.

* Dell Latitude E6420
* Apple iPad 1
* Nook Color
* Samsung P2 media player
* 14 thumb drives
* 8 SD and micro SD cards
* 2 2.5" hard drives
* USB and USB extension cables
* SATA and eSATA cables
* computer tools bag
* tablet stand
* laptop stand
* LCD cleaner
* micro fiber cloths
* LED flashlight
* wireless USB keyboard and mouse
* spare phone battery
* CD binder (Windows, Linux, utility discs)

Depends on which bag, lol. I used to haul around tons of crap in a laptop bag but have since specialized somewhat to save the mess.

1) Black tactical messenger bag loaded with my hardware/networking stuff
- punch down tool
- spool of 1 pair
- butt set
- wiring tester (internal wiring, patch cables, performance, shorts, pairing, etc)
- wire tone/trace set
- crimp and candy tins (small and easier to sort out than bags) of rj45/rj14 connectors
- wire snips
- fold away box cutter
- mag light
- headlamp (led lamp with headband)
- electrical tape
- wiring sticker book (those are life savers, lol)
- some rolled up para cord (million and one uses)
- multimeter
- misc other tools and bits (adapters, jumper cables with gator clips, carpenters pencil, pens, small notebook, etc)

2) A generic tool bag with a misc collection of stuff collected over the ages, adapters, fittings, specialized tools, jewelers tools, etc

3) laptop bag
- laptop
- blue tooth mouse
- external drive
- 3-4 thumb drives
- spiral notepads labeled for each client/project
- pens, pencils, sharpies, etc
- small calculator
- instant wap for travel
- nook loaded with pubs mostly but some books for down time

I do a lot of work from home then go on site for the physical stuff or for meetings. Usually I am hauling around a canvas grocery sack full of something, lol. Pubs or demo materials or some custom wire dojober I put together and need to install or parts or whatever. Those things are really handy.

I have a Fossil canvas messenger bag that I bought to hold a 17" HP laptop a while back. Two front pockets and one wide back pocket on the outside. Typical office slots on the front slot of the inside and then just open space for the rest. Best bag I've ever had and I've had several dozen over the years.

In it:

laptop
nook (original, see no reason to upgrade it)
iPad (when I have it, it's the wife's)
1TB external
small maglight
flash drive (several)
notebook (actual paper)
Mouse (either a generic Microsoft wireless laptop mouse or a wired Logitech G700 depending on where I'm going)
crap ton of pens
several chords

I used to keep a chill pad in there as well, but ever since I've switched to a Toshiba I haven't needed it.

*edit* I tried to find a link the the bag I have, but apparently they don't make it anymore. Which is a shame.

I used to carry a bag with my laptop, sec tokens, USB hard drive, and several types of cables and connectors (cross over, patch, DB9, split USB for HP blades), a multi-tool with several connectors, and I think a spare 120v power cable. But now that I have my own office within a single data center, I just take my iPad to work. Everything else I need is at work where I need it. happy

Same here, plus my house/car keys of course.

As for the phone, you'll have to indulge my whims. I use it to make phone calls. Shocking I know, but true!

Certainly in my case (no pun intended) it's a generational thing. I'm really not interested in getting into apps and social networking etc, those are the directions in which the kids are taking the computer age and that's fine for them but it isn't for me. However, I suspect the real difference is that those of you carting around great bags filled to the brim with techie gear are either professional techies or amateur geeks happy !

Consultant... my clients prefer 'pet geek' over 'professional geek' though, lol. It helps to love the work enough and be doing it long enough to know a little bit about everything and what you don't you can get up to speed on quickly. grin

A relatively ancient Dell Latitude with various cables. The only travel I do is for pleasure and it is good for killing time in airports, email, surfing and the best part it plays Civilization 3 quite well and cost quite a bit less than a netbook.

Locally? My iPad and iPhone. TeamViewer and Dropbox solve so many problems it is beyond crazy.

On the road? Throw in my MacBook Pro (runs Lion and Win7) and my small collection of cables and adapters. I have an AV cable that lets me give PowerPoint presentations on a lightbox straight from my iPad as well as let me watch movies from my iPad on the hotel tv. I also have an adaptor or two in the event I get some good photos or video I want to spruce up on my MBP.
