More interesting stats for you this week! With all the talk about the death of WoW, we decided to take a look at the percentage of characters that made it from being level 80 during Wrath of the Lich King to level 85 today. These stats compare a sample of 1M+ characters from early 2010 and checks which players reached level 85. Keep in mind a few things before interpreting these stats:

Death Knight is the least leveled class because everyone leveled one to 80 during WotLK to be one of the cool kids. Including a fair amount of people who ended up not liking it.
People didn't hit the "Nothing left to do on my main character, better reroll!" wall that they encountered in WotLK, raids were properly balanced and people didn't spend their first months steamrolling Naxxramas.

Mage 37.82%
Druid 36.84%
Hunter 36.47%
Priest 36.30%
Warrior 35.83%
Shaman 34.77%
Warlock 34.17%
Paladin 33.45%
Rogue 29.56%
Death Knight 25.58%

That would be me. I got my main to 85th, tried some alts, and just couldn't do it anymore... and decided it was time to call it.

3 of the 4 characters I had at lvl 80 by the end of WoLK are now 85.

My 4th 85 is a shaman I leveled after Cata was released.

^^^^

This.

So it looks like about 1 out of 3 level 80s were leveled to 85. Now add in all those who hit 85 then quit shortly after, that's an even more dismal number comparatively.

The saddest part of all is that it only takes two to three weeks casually playing to go from 80 to 85, yet people still don't want to do it more than once, because the content is just that bad.

I got all 10 of my 80's to 85 - that's no problem at all. Grinding long and miserable heroics, grinding long and miserable rep grinds, and the pug unfriendliness of the first set or raids made doing anything for all of them beyond that a grim prospect.

Enter firelands daily grind from hell that makes all other rep grinds look trivial and my desire to log in went away.

I'm also not a big fan of of how the firelands raid is setup, where you have to clear tons of trash just to do anything (similar to but far worse than ICC) and also don't care for the BOE bonanza (that's also somewhat similar to ICC but far worse).

Let's see here before I left in Jan. I had 3 toons at 85, Pally, Hunter, DK. My Shaman is sitting at 83 or 84 at the moment, leveled him up before Cata Release, my Warrior was either at level 82 or 83, my mage was there as well. My other hunter was still sitting at 80.

Once I saw that I couldn't craft top gear due to the fact that orbs were BOP, I said screw it, I'm not running all my crafters through dungeons so I can make gear.

i am not sure about the validity of this list but i am happy to see rogues near the bottom. i am of the mind that any stealth class should have significant dps reduction just for getting an ability as useful as stealth...but with druids being so overpowered blizzard must have gutted rogues for some other reason

Sadly, I tried. I think I have a a whole rift .. er.. pack of characters in the 80-84 range (priests, mages, couple of pallies, another DK, druid, rogue, warlock, I think there was a SP in there somewhere.)

Just couldn't take it.

I got my Hunter, Paladin, Druid and DK to 85 then quit. I then came back for Firelands, brought all 4 through the intro quest and started the dailies on my Hunter.

After getting 150 after 150, only to open more dailies and not really getting much, I bagged it. What a f*cking waste. Unsubbed...

WotLK was so much better than this, I actually enjoyed the Argent Tournament stuff. Pfft.

It's just as well as I got into the SWTOR beta, so I'm busy with that. shhh

I want to make sure I am reading this right, take the Rogue 29.56% for example, does that mean that 70.44 percent of the level 80 Rogue population in Wrath never bothered to progress to 85?

If this is true those stats are abysmal and should be a slap in the face for Blizzard, I would think heads should be rolling over it.

There is certainly an epic amount of fail in Cata but this isn't the way to measure it. At the end of LK, I had 6 80's. I leveled one to 85 and then took a break. I recently came back and leveled a second. That still leaves 4 sitting at lvl 80 that contribute to the numbers above. I would imagine this same trend occurs in the life of each expac at varying rates. There are so many other easy targets of Cata fail that this does nothing to support.

I think these numbers show a few things about Cataclysm

1. Cataclysm has much less replay value than WotLK. Once you've leveled a toon from 80-85 once you've pretty much seen it all, regardless of faction.

2. Cataclysm is much less alt friendly than WotLK once you reach endgame. Pretty much everything at endgame is a chore and trying to do it on more than one character is nuts. Cat's endgame is just too damn time consuming.

3. Characters are so incredibly homogeneous that there's no reason to roll alts. Why go to all the effort of leveling another character if they're basically the same as the ones you already have?

Well they did add a lot of new low level content, so I imagine a lot of altoholics are rerolling, not leveling to 85.

yeah i am not denying that populations are down but these stats are not a good indicator to me. most of the alt people are making alts from level 1 since the zones are changed with cataclysm. i am not even a big alt person yet i rolled a new toon to experience those zones rather than doing 80-85 a second time on my only other 80 toon. its kind of impressive that at least 1/4 of characters of each class made it to 85.

Exactly.

Would you rather play the same 5 levels you just played (80 to 85) or start a new character at 1. I know I made a warrior, got him to 45, then quit, lol.

Rolled both goblin and a ... oh lol... I've already forgotten what they were called... a werewolf...

2 of my guildmates got their doggies to 40ish.

I don't remember what level I dropped mine. Probably early 20s.

And all of our goblins made it out of their starter zone and disappeared permanently.

As an altaholic, yeah, that kept me occupied for about a week (I'm being very generous.)

Glad I got to see it. There were parts that were really fun. Unfortunately, most of that fun didn't make it past the newly revamped cart-on-rails-feeling Westfall zone, even counting the twist in Deadmines.

You are right Korrigan, but the pacing was different. It didn't feel like a grind when you were busting out max-45 minute heroics when everyone was appropriately geared for them and getting almost 2k rep per instance.

Back when I was just starting out in Cata, it took hours (plural) to finish a normal and I think I was wearing a tabard and I got less than 500 rep the whole run for whatever faction I was sporting. WOTLK just had better pacing in my opinion.

2. Cataclysm is much less alt friendly than WotLK once you reach endgame. Pretty much everything at endgame is a chore and trying to do it on more than one character is nuts. Cat's endgame is just too damn time consuming.
I guess you don't remember how bad the reputation grinds were in WotLK... and the "tournament" grinds too.
The reputations raise MUCH faster in Cataclyms than they have anytime before, including WotLK.

Not to mention that there were far more daily quests around for many of the reputation grinds. Even the hated Zul Drak Argent Crusade series of quests rewarded you with better rep than smacking pygmies with a hammer. Not to mention that there were two daily quests for Argent Crusade before the tourney, which added a third.

For Cata, I think the only places that had an abundance of Daily quests at launch, not sure if this has changed, was the Twilight Highlands and Therazane Rep. The others might have had one or two quests that rewarded you with some rep, or no dailies at all as is the case with Hyjal. The only way to rep grind was talbard wearing and going into dungeons, once more forcing people to play the way Blizzard wants you to play.

This is another reason I quit the game, being a hunter, all the decent hunter gear from rep was found on all these reps that didn't have a significant amount of dailies. Cata made the game far more against the player than for the player. This is why the Wrath model was good, and the Cata model is bad, the pacing of the game was just far more better and made all aspects of the game more a game, instead of feeling like work.

There's a lot more to endgame than getting exalted with the factions. Besides, this expansion has its fair share of terrible faction grinds, like the Tol Barad factions. Not to mention that grinding reps using tabards is a lot more time consuming since the dungeons take so much longer to get into and get through.

Also, the new firelands dailies are much worse than the tournament dailies were. The firelands dailies are a month of doing dailies to unlock dailies, that you do to unlock more dailies, that you do to unlock more dailies, that you do to unlock more dailies, that you do to get recipes that require BoP orbs that you have to go and grind dungeons to get.

Other parts of endgame much more time consuming that they were in WotLK, like gearing alts in heroics. It takes a lot longer than it ever did in WotLK to get a toon geared enough to step into raids. Capping valor points each week takes much more time than getting frost badges ever did. Even just getting a toon some honor gear seems to take longer in Cat.

Yep.

Btw, they spent an enormous amount of time revamping the 1-58 zones. Some of the quests are really excellent. I've done it a few times on a few alts. Unfortunately, you zip through it and end up leveling out of the area way before the zone is done. Another problem is that the quests are TOO directed. Ghostcrawler said it was too overwhelming to go into a zone and have tons of !'s--WRONG. It really takes away from replay value.

My last gripe (for now) is that I like to take questing breaks and PVP, and it's SOOO unbalanced it's beyond ridiculous. Somewhere between 60-74, there's some almost balanced levels--but they're few and far between. Post 70, you get a good set of PVP gear with resilience. Those are some good levels. Then you hit the 75-79 bracket, and you get Cata twinks with 35K+ health. Unfortunately, Blizzard has done nothing to and will do nothing to fix it.

Hopefully, they will keep losing subs and wake up.

a BIG part of the problem honestly is that they remoed the ability to do both 10 and 25 man raids.. why level up more alts when there's maybe 1/3 the raids being pugged as there was in LK?

and where is our weekly raid quest? did i miss something here? give incentive to people to pug a least 2-3 bosses in an instance.
