I am comfortable with my android phone and what apps are on it but a tablet is a whole new ballgame. I was due so treated myself with a Xoom but have no idea what apps are pretty much must have. I understand there is a really good thumbs keyboard out there and something about it shipping with some lousy default settings for web browsing but beyond that am pretty much in the dark on what is good and not so good. Things like is the default video/pic/media handler good or is there some must have app to do it? A file explorer that works well on the larger screen. Stuff like that.

I like both ES File Explorer and Astro File Explorer.

I use Dolphin HD as my web browser.

Dolphin for browser.
Winamp if you don't like the stock music player is good.
Team viewer is a must have.  I love being able to access my PC anywhere.
Google Docs
Kindle (if you are into reading and have kindle books)
Dropbox
ES File Manager
Bluetooth File Transfer

I also have a question:  Have you hooked up your XOOM to a 5.1 system via HDMI?  If so, does it sound like crap (flat, no bass, center speaker only)

Can I get $15/month for not playing them?

Opera Mobile is worth a look too, it's my favorite browser. Has a nice UI and very fast. No plugins like Dolphin though.

Has that been your experience or is it a known issue? I would think since the audio/video is just a digital signal it would come out just as clear and sharp as it would anywhere else once it hit the stereo. I would think the limiter would be the source media and not the Xoom itself.

The most it will get hooked up to is directly to the tv in my office so that would only be the little built in speaker system it has. I actually got a little portable ball speaker and it sounds pretty damn good for what it is. With upnplay (nice if you have a upnp media server running) I stream stuff off my NAS and it sounds great though I am running into some weirdness where it will play some h264 but not others and these are all literally same source, same settings and done in a batch but one will play and another won't. This is the default player though so I'll mess with some of those other players I've seen mentioned.

Unfortunately it appears to be a known issue. If you look up Xoom audio hdmi, you will find tons of threads on it

Oh bummer. I didn't buy it for that purpose though so won't really sweat it. It works well enough with the built in speakers or this little portable speaker for me.

It is my only complaint about my XOOM.  Otherwise it is a good tablet.  Thankfully I dont have the problems Ravyn encountered.  Either that or I have a higher tolerance.  But since 3.1, and now 3.2, it is much more stable.

OK resolved the encoding issues and managed to get the quality high enough that it works for watching stuff off my PS3/XBox too. I'm bummed about having to go stereo instead of 5.1 but I grew up with only two speakers so don't mind it so much. When I really want to rock out I can always pull out the DVDs. I much prefer being able to just cycle through everything on my media server though and being able to play anything from anywhere in the house without dealing with discs.

With SD card working I'll have no problems keeping entertained on long flights, heh. A couple seasons worth of shows or a pile of movies should keep me going.

I like being able to view my Nook stuff here too. It beats the hell out of the Nook (BW first gen) for PDFs and will actually be able to do comics and the like too though so that is nice. I still want the Nook for casual reading though as I really like that screen.

The annoying thing is not having access to root. I can't mount SMB shares or add some of the tools I would like. I guess that is the next project when I have time, heh. Looks like it isn't all that hard and is even done up to 3.2 already, at least for the model I have.

OK. Thumb keyboard and quick controls... huge difference! With this and the built in hotspot on my phone I'm set. Now I just need to get rid of all these images and ads. I forgot what a mess this place is without filters.
