Subject: Logitech G110... yuck! (update: It's yummy now!)
After using Saitek keyboards for about the last decade, with my current Eclipse II probably about 5 years old now. I decided to go ahead and get a new keyboard. And because I have been using Logitech mice forever, I figured I'd try a Logitech keyboard now. I also assumed I'd be able to use the same Setpoint software with my gaming G500 mouse as I would with a G110 gaming keyboard.

The G110 came in today. I was disappointed to find out it doesn't work with Setpoint software. I have to download another app for the keyboard called Gaming Software. And that software doesn't work with my mouse. Seems a bit stupid on Logitech's part to not combine the software for their gaming keyboard and gaming mouse together. The two programs don't even look like they are made by the same company. Unify that stuff Logitech.

But that isn't important. The important thing is how well it feels typing. OMFG. These keys feel so rough and stiff. I know it's just out of the box, but the $10 Dell keyboards I use at work feel more responsive and smoother than this $80 (retail, got this for $60 on sale) keyboard. I'm extremely disappointed with the feel of the G110. I'm typing this message on the keyboard right now and it's a major chore and I'm having to backspace and fix errors almost every other word. The spacebar is especially bad.

I'm going to TRY really hard to see if a few days of use will break it in. But my wrists are already starting to ache typing on this damn thing. So I'm not sure how long I'll make it. Based on the example infront of me, I would only recommend this keyboard to people I hate.

I love the slim line keyboards now with the wee wee buttons. The less I have the press the better. happy

Well the more I think about it, the more I think this must just be a bad apple. It's just amazingly bad. I can't believe all the G110s can suck this much.

Still, pisses me off I got to RMA this now.

The keyboard included a free copy of Star Trek Online. Their stupid automated RMA system is now trying to charge me $22 for the game now that I'm returning the keyboard. Haha. Hopefully NewEgg will fix that for me.

I love my G110. I've never noticed any of the problems you mention and I use a lot of different quality/style keyboards. As for the software... that sucks. I've never used more than the macro software for the keyboard so I haven't run into that myself.

I might be a defective unit. NewEgg is taking it back for me.

I'm gonna visit Fry's and Best Buy and see if I can find any G110 or G510 keyboards on display to test out.

Kinda thinking about trying a mechanical keyboard too. But not sure I could get used to the noise. Also most don't have attached palm rests either and that's an issue for me.

wow that is really surprising, I have not tried that keyboard, but I use all logitech products. Mice, keyboard, speakers, headsets ect.

I had been using the MX 5500 Revolution for the past few years now, it just started acting up on me, loosing connection (wireless), I told logitech about it they replaced with a G19 Gaming keyboard, ($250) retail even though my keyboard was actually outside of warrenty. They sent me a UPS shipping lable to ship it back and sent me the new keyboard for free.

I always buy my logitech stuff right of their online store, gets to me in under 2 business days every time.

Well that was a typo when I originally posted it. But now I might have to concede to it being true. I was at Fry's today trying out a bunch of keyboards. Including the Logitech G series. I hated the feel of the G110, G510, and G19 I was able to test out. They all had the same rough stiff feeling as the G110 I got from NewEgg.

Even the cheap Logitech keyboards felt better to me. Maybe gamers like the stiffer feel to the keys. *shrug* I don't really see complaints about typing on these keyboards, which is why I was surprised by how much I hated it. Guess I'm the defective one. happy

Got a Razer Lycosa Mirror. Will be plugging it in and playing with it in a few moments.

I find that they usually break in ok. To be honest I do like the slim "short press" computers. You should try to track down an old Logitech Di'novo. I owned that keyboard and mouse set for about 4 years, it has a short, soft laptop style key press.

The Logitech Illuminated Keyboard seemed pretty nice, I was going to buy it, but they were sold out. There is also a wireless version called the K800, but not sure I really want a wireless illuminated keyboard.

So far really liking the feel of the Lycosa Mirror. Wasn't sure if I'd like the glossy look or not, but now that it's on my desk and lit up, looks pretty cool. Key caps are very smooth too and I kinda like that feel. Most importantly the typing action feels good. Maybe not quite as good as the Eclipse II, but for me feels considerably better than the Logitech G-series.

So I'm happy with the Lycosa so far. The capacitive multimedia buttons seem nice too.

PS. Yeah, I was thinking maybe using the G110 for a while might help loosen up that tight stiff feeling. But just wasn't sure and generally hadn't needed to do that before.

I ditched my gaming keyboard and got a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, wired version. I love the low profile and the keys have that laptop feel. It lights up with white LED's, just like my Corsair case. The keyboard, wrist rest and keys have a smooth velvety feel to them.

I didn't bother loading the drivers for it. Windows 7 detected it and the FN keys on top, shared with F1-F12 seem to work anyway. Hitting the mail icon with FN launched my Outlook, etc.

I guess my only complaint, which is minor, is the cord is rather short, or shorter than every other keyboard I have. The cord also comes out of the top, right hand side of the keyboard, not the middle or center of the top. This made routing the cable through the hole in my LCD stand look really stupid, so I have the cable going straight back to the right of the LCD's stands legs.

The extra strong keys are to help the keyboard survive excessive face rolling that today's gamers engage in.

The Lycosa Mirror is a nice keyboard. But I ended up returning it, I just realized I prefer the feel of full sized keys more than those low profile scissor keys.

I decided to give the G110 another try. Especially with it on sale for $58 at Fry's and $40 after the mail in rebate. There had to be something off with the first one because I almost never see a bad thing mentioned about this keyboard.

Glad I did. This second G110 is MUCH better to type on. There was definitely something wrong with that first one. Keys don't feel too stiff, spacebar is working perfectly. Much happier this time around. Whew, I'm not crazy now.

Glad to hear it. I bought a G110 and I'm pretty happy with it (backlight could be a bit brighter though).

I set up a macro to switch between default sound devices and just leave my headset plugged in 100% of the time, and its pretty convenient to have those jacks on the keyboard.

You can adjust the brightness the same time you pick your color in the profiler by clicking on the color part of the M1, M2, M3 buttons and selecting custom. Higher in the color picker box is brighter. Of course this limits your color choices since the darker colors won't be as bright. I can't see needing brighter than that but maybe you do and already know this.

I always have a problem ruining my gaming keyboards. Seem to always spill some beverage on them and no matter how I try to save them a week or 2 later a key or two will stop working.

I have tried:

Saitek Eclipse II with the plugin macro 'keyboard'. Really liked that one, worked well, looked nice, overall was nice.

Saitek Cyborg. Liked it but only got to use it for a couple weeks before I dumped a glass of water on it and had to go back to my Eclipse II, which I eventually dumped pop on and replaced with a.....

Razor Lycosa. Hated this thing. Actually I really liked it but apparently some of the models of it have keys which will randomly stop working and you have to unplug and replug it. Luckily I ended it the same way as the others.

I think I need a larger desk or stopping drinking things when I'm on my computer happy . Never have this problem on my work computers.

Saitek Eclipse I was the one with the plugin game pad. I had that for a short while, something happened to it though, forgot what.
http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-PZ08A-PC-Gamers-Keyboard/dp/B0002TJDPW

Then I went to the Saitek Eclipse II. Used two of these keyboards for about 6 years I think. They both worked great and felt nice to type on, no game pad though, but much better looking with 3 different back light colors available.
http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-Eclipse-Backlit-Keyboard-PK02AU

I bought a Logitech G15 at one point, but that was right before my house fire. Only had it a month I think and the keys got all melted. Ended up going back to an Eclipse after that. G15 was nice, but I didn't really use the LCD and it was too wide, I didn't need all those macro keys because I used a Nostromo too.
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-967599-0403-G15-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B000AY0HTU

And then we fast forward to now. I've retired the second Eclipse II. I used a Logitech G110 briefly, but it's already been retired after only a week.
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-920-002232-Gaming-Keyboard-G110/dp/B002RRLQIO
G110 seems like a nice keyboard, but after spending so much time on keyboard forums, I was convinced to give mechanical keyboards a try. Initially I was just going to stick with the G110 because of all the extras light back lighting, USB ports, macroing, and all for just $60.

But then I got weak and ordered a mechanical keyboard. A Thermaltake Meka G1. Primary purpose for picking this one was because of the built in wrist rest, I've become very used to my keyboards having this and very few mechanical keyboards include it. This keyboard uses Cherry Black switches which are ideal for gaming, but don't have tactile feedback like the Blue or Brown switches, and are a bit stiffer, so not quite as ideal for just typing.
http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mechanical-Professional-Keyboard-KB-MEG005US

However I have a second mechanical keyboard on they way. The Thermaltake is nice, but the keys are just a bit too stiff for typing, I can feel my fingers getting tired typing on this too long. Everyone kept saying to get a Filco and the Brown switches seemed to be really popular. I didn't get it at first because it doesn't have a wrist rest, but folks also say that's probably a bad habit I need to break anyway. And I can just buy a wrist rest.

My accountant (good friend forever) is really particular about his keyboards. It is a mechanical model made way back when. He trawls eBay and the like for it and whenever he finds one he snaps it up and always has a couple of them tucked away. I'm not too particular though I do like the feel of a good mechanical keyboard. I guess that is from working with all kinds of keyboards in all kinds of conditions and usually not having a choice in which I use. For at home I end up with a nice general purpose keyboard that has macro keys... typically a Logitech of some flavor.

Might be the IBM Model M keyboards. I hear people love those keyboards and snag them up on eBay. I had piles of them as a kid (my father love collecting computer crap). Wish I knew then that they'd be worth up to $100 on eBay years later.

Curiosity got me to try out a couple of mechanical keyboards, the $100 Thermaltake Meka G1 and the $140 Filco Majestictouch 2.

Was a bit of peer pressure from the folks on HardOCP, Overclockers.net and Geekhack. If you dare mention a membrane style gaming keyboard like the Logitech G110 the thread usually gets dog piled by people preaching the glories of the mechanical keyboard and trying to convert the blasphemous demons for thinking about buying a regular (membrane) keyboard. I drank the Kool-Aid.

Bought two mechanical keyboards. The Thermaltake was my first choice because I really wanted a keyboard with an attached wrist rest and it seemed to get good reviews. And I liked the feel of it, but it uses black switches which are stiffer and I did find it tiring to type on too long. It's great for gaming, not quite ideal for lots of typing for me. So I tried the Filco next, it has brown switches which press down easier, more comfortable to type on for long periods. Sadly it was quite expensive and didn't have an attached wrist rest or media keys or really any extras.

I enjoyed the feel of the keys on the mechanical keyboards. But I really missed all the extras that regular gaming keyboards provide such as dedicated media keys, back lighting, usb hub, wrist rest, and lots of choices. Some mechanical keyboards have some extras, but it doesn't seem any mechanical keyboard really had everything I wanted.

So I am sticking with my $60 Logitech G110 I bought recently.

With some luck maybe mechanical keyboards will gain a bit more popularity here in the US (guess they are already popular in Asia). After all Razer has made a mechanical keyboard recently so maybe Logitech and others will consider jumping in with gaming oriented mechanical keyboards. And I did consider the Razer Black Widow, like other Razer keyboards it seemed to be dogged with lots of quality complaints, so I passed on that.

This entire post written on a Logitech G110. happy

What the hell, I decided to give the Logitech G510 a try. I had assumed the main difference between the G110 and G510 was just the LCD, but learned there is actually another pretty big difference I didn't know about.

There are some smaller trivial differences, the G510 has more LED backlighting color options, you can make the G510 look brighter with these colors too, even white lighting if you wanted. Kinda like that. G510 oddly doesn't have a USB port on it though (guess it can't spare the power because of the LCD). The wrist rest is a little better too.

But the big thing I didn't know about is there is a difference in the quality of the keys. I thought the G110 kinda felt a little soft and mushy. The G510 has a more distinct cleaner feel when typing. I was watching a YouTube video just after my last post and they mentioned this and it was the reason I jumped in my car and drove to Best Buy to get it and what he said is definitely true, the G510 feels better to type on than the G110.

My accountant (good friend forever) is really particular about his keyboards. It is a mechanical model made way back when. He trawls eBay and the like for it and whenever he finds one he snaps it up and always has a couple of them tucked away.

If Thinkgeek still sells their Linux Tux keyboard, or whatever, it's basically a recreation of the the IBM M which is what he is probably using (or a similar facsimile). I used to use one at work until my coworkers complained of the loud clicking noise the keys make. And since I was doing a lot of PHP coding and documentation at the time, it was a lot of clicking.
