My friend just emailed and said Sony announced it. I know it was popular with this crowd.

I found this article about it.

The original planetside had some potential but I always felt like it was more or less Tribes 1.5, with more bugs and some really wacky balance issues.

i hope it plays like an actual fps and character development does stuff like give you new weapons/armor/items and does not affect your character's aim and such like it did in planetside back when i played it. it was dumb that they actually made your character aim worse at lower level

Is that really wrong? A BFG should hit with the same effect weather it is a rookie or a veteran firing it. Now the veteran should have a better chance of actually hitting the target compared to the rookie. The veteran will tend to aim and breath properly where the rookie will tend to spray their ammo with no attempt at aiming.

the only problem is it takes away the "true" skill of the player.. them them point and click away with their accuracy and reflexes instead of imposing artificial dampeners or helpers. now if you aren't actually aiming like in a FPS then it makes sense, because then it's like hit rating in wow. you click attack and if you have the gear to give you enough hit% then you're not gonna miss. but if it's FPS style play, then let it be and FPS.

to the effect of a veteran will have better better aim through pracice/experience of playing the game. if breathing is an issue on say a sniper rifle then a skill/talent could be given that gives steadier aim/breathing while sniping type thing but in the end it should be how well you personally can aim and shoot and not be hindered by a "your level X so you will miss this target more than someone level Y purely because of level (with the exception that if they have a situation where it's like a boss/enemy that's just way too high a level for you..).

The CU didn't destroy the sand box like the NGE did. It did affect god mode where everyone wore composite armor and used slow firing heavy hitting weapons because the correct talent tree selections allowed those slow firing weapons to fire at a much higher speed. I did go back a few times on veteran freebie time and just couldn't get into the "improved" NGE game.

Edit: My opinion of the CU/NGE is the CU came from Sony while the NGE came from Lucas Arts.

SOE doesn't ever seem to get it. Most gaming companies are gamers that love games making games for gamers. No clue what SOE is doing - but they're consistent at it.

Planet Side was a pretty good game, that ultimately suffers from what all those types of games suffer from and that is lack of progression/goals and the eventual boredom that sinks in when you do the same thing over and over and over again.

Anyways, I had enough fun playing the first game that I will seriously consider the second.

Yep. The hard part is that these sorts of games offer nothing over F2P alternatives to legitimize a $15 a month fee. It was a lot of fun when it was populated.

Track record is pretty poor for last series of MMOs they have been involved with regardless of the people involved, the name of the IP, or size of the team. I really loved Planetside... right up to where it was completely being ignored despite being populated. Then everyone kind of just started leaving and never came back for the expansion sad

That said, as someone who liked Planetside... why would I expect the new game to be anything like the original gameplay wise? They haven't stuck to game mechanics of original titles or even expansions (NGE). Heck, they produced DCUO stating it wasn't being designed around consoles even past release day when PC gamers were asking why you couldn't really use your mouse for anything.

I'm probably missing a title that was actually pretty good and true to the IP so I'm all ears, but off hand I can't think of anything they developed recently that would make me actually interested in even following development. Will just wait for release and see what people are saying on other gaming boards about it :P

That is just a stupid comparison. It doesn't take agility or intelligence to properly put one foot in front of the other. It does however take experience and training to accurately fire a weapon.

that is just a stupid comment. jumping over rocks and swimming across water and lava and jumping off cliffs and buildings and all the other sort of movement you can do at low levels in WoW is more than just putting one foot in front of the other. i'm sure swimming through molten lava takes some training.

Maybe if you had explained yourself in your first post it wouldn't have been such a stupid comparison?

In fact it STILL doesn't take any skill to do the things you described, so you are still using a stupid comparison. The closest thing that comes to skill is swimming and the human body can do that naturally anyways. There is not a single person on this planet that can naturally pick up a rifle and be very accurate with it first try.

Jumping over rocks? Anyone can do it.

Swimming across water? Anyone can do it.

Swimming across lava? Wtf are you stupid? There is no real life comparison.

Jumping off cliffs and buildings? All it takes is putting one foot in front of another.

So yeah, your comparison was stupid. Don't get all butt hurt when the truth slaps you across the face.

wtf are you stupid? so a human body can naturally swim at expert level but shooting a gun takes so much more skill?

you really think anyone can jump off a building and walk away from it or jump over rocks and trees and crap equally to everyone else? your comparison is stupid. no need to get so butt hurt because you are wrong.

you go ahead and put one foot in front of the other off a building and let me know how it turns out.

The human body can naturally swim with enough proficiency to get you across a decent sized body of water. The human body can NOT naturally pick up a rifle and proficiently fire and hit a target at a good distance away.

Who the hell said anything about surviving the fall? I only ever said you can do it with no skill at all. If you are going to throw all logic out the window then like Arc said there is no point in arguing with you.

And I know for a fact I could jump over rocks and fallen trees when I was younger, along with every single other kid I was around, with absolutely ZERO practice or experience.

So please, try to explain to me how I'm wrong again Mr. Butthurt.

how can you say that the results of shooting a gun will vary based on your skill and experience but things like swimming or spelunking everyone can do at the exact same skill level. if a game can take one of those aspects (shooting a gun) and add an artificial dampner to mess with the player's input then how is it any different than adding such a dampner on other aspect (movement across terrain).

its like talking to a 12 yr old you are so butthurt.

Except I never said those thing wouldn't vary. You sure do like to make things up. I wonder if it's on purpose or because your grasp on reality is so fragile?

If you truly can't see the difference between the skill needed to fire a weapon with any amount of accuracy and the ability of every single healthy human to perform the basic movements you insist require skill to do then you are one of the least intelligent posters on this forum.

What's it like to not be able to grasp simple concepts like that? Do you find yourself staring at the TV with drool dripping off your chin?

I was merely poking fun at your comparison there. You make it sound like swimming is instinctual while pointing a rifle breathing calmly and gently squeezing the trigger takes a lot of training. In the army, I was hitting targets 400 yards away my first time firing the m16 weapon. So it can't be that hard. Both swimmming and shooting take practice to be proficient.

Actually, that sounds like summer equivalent to the biathlon. Should be an Olympic event, the Swim and Shoot.

Yep, just like I got instruction on how to swim when I was a kid. I really do not know what issue you are trying to argue with me here. Are you saying swimming doesn't require any training or learning? I just thought it was funny how you worded the one sentence about human bodies naturally being able to swim, and thought the the only natural swimming ones were the dead floaty ones.

I was able to swim with no instruction at all. Every human can swim with no instruction at all.

So you think it's not possible to swim well enough to get by without instruction? Are you really going to argue that?

Quazi, please explain that if "every human can swim with no instruction at all", why do people drown?

Humans can swim before they can walk. People should really know their own capabilities. As a matter of fact, it is instinctual, you do it in the womb. Funny how your attempts to discredit come back to bite you in the ass.

Except in the womb, you don't drown by having your head underwater. Next?

This also does not happen out of the womb, except if you are an idiot and IGNORE your instinct to not breathe water. Sorry to say that Stupid trumps instinct, I figured this was a given. Next time I will make the necessary caveats to appease the obtuse.

Is this rocket science?

Oh wait, sorry, flippant "Next?"
