Subject: Problem with my cpu heatsink/fan
Hey guys,

the heat sink/fan that sits on my CPU has these little pegs that push into the mobo. The pegs have sheared ends and the fan unit won't sit properly on the CPU resulting in overheat crashes. Is it possible to replace just the heat sink/fan? I am curious as to what my options are here.

Thanks

Yes it should be possible but we'll need CPU & mobo details. In the meantime I would down clock the CPU as much as possible or just stop using it until you have a replacement sink & fan installed.

You'll have a huge choice of aftermarket heatsinks and fans to choose from to replace your stock heatsink and fan. And if you spend about $25, you'll almost certainly get something that is better and quieter than what you had before anyway.

As Aerlinthian said, you'll need to be sure to get one that is compatible with your motherboard. For Intel, socket 775, 1155, and 1156 are pretty common sockets and you can find some heatsinks that will support all 3.

If you want to keep the price down, this CM Hyper TX3 is pretty nice for just $25. It supports socket 775, 1155, and 1156 (1155 and 1156 have the same hole spacing).

Awesome, thanks. I currently have been leaving it off,I can't recall what type of chip it is, but I will look into it. Glad to know this should be an easy fix.
