Subject: Sound problems...
Ok so i finaly got my gtx 580(my wife let me go nuts) got it installed updated the drivers today and i lost my sound for speakers and headset.

Seems the new drivers if you express install did a HDMI audio driver that messed up my xfi card from sound blaster.

I uninstalled the niv one yet it still cant find my sound card/headset it finds a digital only that my earforce 11 headset works with useing the digital spdif box from my 360.

tried reinstalling my drivers (card number is SB0770) and it says it cant find the card.

tried running the Fixit program from MS and it cant find a card/head set either pluged in, took out the card and changed slots still nothing.

so after 3 hours of coming thru stuff on the net i am at a loss.

Anyone have any idea or clue what the problem is? did the card die somehow? lol

edit- the sdpif output on the back does not work on the card but does for the onboard spot but my speakers wont play thru the onboard either.

Go into the CMOS setup and clear or allow a reset of the NVRAM. Save upon exit.

Each time you put in or take out a physical card do a NVRAM clear. I'm not entirely clear on what is going on but what I would probably do is remove the drivers for the sound card. Remove the sound card and disable on board sound in the CMOS. What I'm trying to do here is completely disable the sound apparatus. See if you can find a software tool to purge out the drivers completely.

Between all of this you want at bare minimum two full reboots of the OS and check that everything works the way it should before you put the sound card back in. I'm assuming that you don't want to rebuild the system from scratch unless you have to. I'm thinking either something is hooked up wrong, not seated correctly or the OS has driver confusion.

This is an IRQ conflict issue...move the card to another slot.

Its either an IRQ issue, or your not supplying enough power...hence the reason the DEVICE is not showing in the DM.

Try the sound card in all the slots.

I hope you mean with the BIOS reset you removed and moved the card, cause the bios reset will not clear the IRQs...you can turn off devices within the BIOS that arent being used like onboard sound, IEEE 1394, and so on and see if it will free another accessable IRQ.

Yeah good point on disabling items in the CMOS. I always disable everything that I don't use for on board hardware and I allow in the CMOS setup for the OS to assign resources which most of the time is not a problem these days.

Regarding the original post...

Did you go into the Windows Control Panel, Sound, Playback, and make sure the SB X-Fi speakers were the default device still?

digital was back then and i was unable to chose the speakers as it said device not found.

Starting to think i killed the sound card.

Got all my speakers working thru 7.1 setting (there 5.1) so it works for now.

Card should still be functional, just not in your system with that VC.  Toss it in another system with an older VC and it should work again.

confused
I've never seen a sound card that required power from an external source (powersupply). This is an X-Fi extreme gamer (Dell OEM version) I have one in my computer now and it does not require external power.

As long as your happy with the Onboard and everything else is functioning, thats what matters.

The fact that it DISAPPEARED from the DM shows that there is a hardware level conflict and not a driver issue.  If it were only a driver issue, it would still appear in the DM but could not operate.

Card miraculously got fried when you inserted the new VC and the computer continued to function normally....not likely.
