If you use an authenticator ? and we hope you do ? you may soon notice that an authenticator prompt may not appear with every login. We?ve recently updated our authentication system to intelligently track your login locations, and if you?re logging in consistently from the same place, you may not be asked for an authenticator code. This change is being made to make the authenticator process less intrusive when we?re sure the person logging in to your account is you.

We hope to continue improving the authenticator system to ensure the same or greater security, while improving and adding features to make having one a more user friendly experience. If you don?t already have a Battle.net Authenticator attached to your account, don?t wait until it?s too late - http://us.battle.net/en/security/checklist

Hmmm while I like the change for me....I know my brother won't like it. Him and his kids play on the same account with the same authenticator. One of the ways he keeps them from playing when they're not supposed to is the authenticator. If their system just bypasses it....I guess he'll have to start hiding power cords like our mom did heh.

Yeah, its definitely less intrusive to have one of your roommates or their buddy hack your computer and no longer need the authenticator as long as it is in the same location from when you last played.

I made an acct for one of my sons a while back and it gave me the ability to dictate which time(s) he was allowed to log on. It's all under parental controls in the account management area of the site.

I don't care for this change. Too many useful cases where an authenticator is specifically desired to be required each and every login regardless of location. I thought they already had a system that "learned" your normal IP and would only prompt you when away from that IP?

Methinks someone has a screwed up ISO character set (or lack of support for same).

Of course you do- more money for j00!

It makes sense from their viewpoint- an authenticator is marketed towards Joe User that doesn't want his idiotic downloading habits and 'password' password to end up with his account being ganked by someone in Korea. They'll be happy to not have to verify the authenticator every time they log in. If you're using it as some other form of security, it's not necessary in the first place, smart & secure passwords, parental controls, /etc. will do the job just fine.

It's just like Facebook using cookies to determine new machine login vs. existing computer.

I sorta keep up with news and this came out of nowhere, so several of my guildies were freaking out when they suddenly didn't need to authenticate. I was telling them they were in the process to getting hacked and having their authenticators removed. I'm helpful, or something.

Don't be ridiculous. You can't expect people to be personally responsible for their own computers or children, or to use features built-in to OSes for years and years now to control who can access stuff on their PCs. Insanity, I say.

You should probably pass on the authenticator and save up to get your own place... sounds like you have bigger problems than Blizzard being a big ole meanie.

Because realizing a notable portion of the playerbase logs in from dorms or houses with more than one person in them is just CRAZY, AMIRITE?

Something that bothered me about this change is i mistyped my password TWICE.. third time it let me log in with no authenticator.. that bothers me... seems to me you don't put in the right password it should then make sure you put in the authenticator to log in.

I have got kicked often on the last month or so. I've hated having to enter both the password and code to get back. I also use two accounts and hate the log on process when swapping. So I like this change. I did panic and put in a ticket when this change was put in.

I can see where some people might have a problem. Their should be a flag to force the use of the code if you want. I like the change I'm the only one who uses my computer. I tried using a different computer on the same router and it demands the code.

I'm the only one who uses my computer, so I like the change.

I do think they handled it poorly. There was no message or warning on my login screen the day this went live (or the day before).

If I didn't come here I wouldn't have even known about the change and I would have panicked.

I elected to add another level of security to my account. I paid for this option, knowing I would have to authenticate each time I logged in after adding it. In short, I chose to make it that way, and wish they hadn't nerfed the extra security I knowingly chose and even paid for.

This. I liked that security option. I do not like software only solutions no matter how robust they may think it is. It's rare that a hardware security solution is hacked, and with this change we are back to the level of banks. Not that it bad... but I am used to working in industries that can't afford even a single breach... and we always used hardware via either a fab or physical break.

Anything can be hacked, but software just always seems to be broken quicker.

what does it mean by "same place"? like could your neighbor with the same isp as you not need to enter the authenticator if they knew your info?

does it not work on IP address also - in which case theyre unique.

Seems like the best solution for Blizz would be to add an option in our battle.net profiles that says "Prompt for authenticator every time".

Based on my experience, it seems to ask you once a week, if you don't change computers. I authenticated last Thursday and it didn't ask me until today.
