They opened for System of a Down, and they were a BLAST. They're like an Irish Punk/Gypsy type sounding band with accordions and violins. They're show reminded me of Flogging Molly live. If you haven't heard of them, check them out! Here's the song they opened with:

A co-worker went to the System of a Down concert when they were here and was really unimpressed by them. Didn't feel they matched up well with the main act and had too many people on stage not doing anything for most of the act.

It's all a matter of opinion, obviously, but I found them to be really fun and different. I was in a such a good mood to get to see System again, I probably would have been pleased with anyone, but I paid enough attention to come home and look them up.

Gogol Bordello put on a hell of a show last year at ACL. They managed to capture the crowd better than any of the headliners I saw that weekend. They're one of the most fun acts I've seen live and they do such a great job creating an atmosphere of being at a huge party rather than just listening to some dudes play music.

Speaking of concerts, I'm still tryin to decide if I should go to this (Weezer, Ween, Protomen, Guitar Wolf, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears as highlights though there's some ACL overlap):

http://freepresssummerfest.com/lineup.php

And I've already a 3 day pass to this (Stevie Wonder, Arcade Fire, and Kanye as headliners and a really strong supporting lineup):

There's a concert coming to Los Angeles this summer that is unbelievable. I'm really sad I can't make it. Rage Against the Machine, The Muse, Rise Against, Immortal Technique and Lauren Hill. I am going to see A Perfect Circle in July though.

Muse is freaking awesome live. Jealous of getting to see APC too, I'm pretty sure they're bypassing Houston.

If they ever come near you on tour you HAVE to see them live. The studio recordings, while great, don't do them justice. Looks like they've got a couple shows in TN then they'll be back in the US in late August.

Edit: oh bonnaroo duh.

By the way, System played a 29 song set list. I don't think I've seen anything close to that. There was basically no down time at all. It was just song, after song, after song and next thing I knew, they were playing "Sugar", and told us they loved us, and that was that. There literally was ZERO downtime the entire show. It was amazing, fast and full of energy.

Can't tell if this is sarcasm or not!

But seriously the best bands are the ones that already sound good on their cd, but then you see them live and they put forth the effort to make the show an amazing experience.

Oh I was being 100% serious. I've seen a few bands live that I either really liked, or at least sounded good on their albums. However, live they sucked. No way to sugar coat it, they just sucked. Either the sound was off, the guy running the sound was awful (which really should never happen...) or - and I'm not lying - they completely lost the tempo between them on multiple songs and the songs sounded like garbage. All horrible things to hear out of a live band.

But there have been some bands that sound just as good live as they do on their album, which is rare enough, considering some of the engineering that goes into some albums... or they sounded even better live. Either situation will really raise my respect level for a group, or even convince me that they're actually pretty good.

Good! grin

Other examples of good on album but amazing live that I've seen: Matt and Kim (their energy and crowd interaction is ridiculous, Matt climbed the stage and dangled by one hand from the catwalk), Protomen (love these guys), Nine Inch Nails (most incredible stage effects I've ever seen), The Mountain Goats (how John Darnielle can make a crowd that happy and upbeat with songs that depressing is astonishing), Muse (second best stage effects).

I should have gone to see Flaming Lips but I didn't cause I'm dumb.

Our tastes are a little different, but I agree on Nine Inch Nails. He's amazing live. I think the most intense band I've seen live is Tool. A Perfect Circle also had great sound both times I've seen them. As you can tell, I'm a fan of Maynard James Keenan's voice.

A band that completely surprised me was Green Day. I'm not a huge fan, but their sound was very good.

The most disappointed I've ever been at a live band is Deftones. I'm a huge fan of their music, but I've seen them live twice and they were terrible both times. I won't waste the money again.

The bands I've thought have been the worst were Splender and Vertical Horizon. I know... I didn't see them intentionally. They were both opening for Third Eye Blind, of whom I'm a big fan. (My musical tastes are all over the place).

Anyway, point is they were both awful. The sound was bad. Splender's vocals were off, and the energy of each band was nonexistent. I don't need to see crazy, death-defying acrobatics at a concert, but I'd at least like to see you tap your foot or even take a step that way.

I would kill to see Tool. I was unable to get tickets for the show here last summer and I am so mad about it.

Edit: also, our tastes are more similar than you think. I tend to go to festivals rather than individual concerts, and I usually end up being pleasantly surprised by what I see there. Example: ever heard of Clutch? Awesome blend of heavy heavy rock and blues. I think you'd enjoy them. Example musics:

Electric Worry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx6FV2qR2TY
50,000 Unstoppable Watts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDoKyzHzP14
10001110101
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdYKTek5N1Q

If you like it, start with From Beale Street to Oblivion, move on to Robot Hive/Exodus and Blast Tyrant.

Edit2: this thread rules

Edit3: Oh man I should have put this one in there too:
Burning Beard (where in the video Neil Fallon totally embraces the lunatic preacher vibe he gives off live.)

Or you could have been like me and bought a ticket on stubhub for $30 total the morning of the show 90 minutes away (was way in the back of the arena, but still), and then on the drive to the show that evening have your car's radiator meltdown 20 minutes in. So that was a sweet $700 ticket I didn't even get to use. plain

Ok so this is a movie trailer but I don't give a crap because the cover of Immigrant Song by Trent Reznor and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is so goddamn amazing that you all need to hear/see it. Also the trailer is awesome and David Fincher is directing this so it'll basically be amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kOFGI0p6SM&feature=player_embedded

And yeah, Clutch is a criminally underrated band who it feels like should have had a much larger influence on music but they never really hit it big for some dumb reason.

It's fincher, it'll be on the same level as se7en, fight club, social network, and zodiac most likely.

But really I posted it because I can't get that song out of my head now. Such a good cover.

They're Swedish. The first one is supposedly good but they go downhill. I haven't seen any of them yet.

Same here, it was on one of the Showtimes or something and I caught it. I thought it held up very well... doesn't really look dated contents-wise (and it's definitely shot in the Fincher style so it's dark and beautiful with jarring angles).
