In the last month I've played:
Rift - Great game. Needs some end game tweaking or objectives other than PvP rank grinding. I don't mind grinding if there is a point. I want a modern day AC-like game.
AC - Yes this is my first time playing this MMO. Got to level 75 on my mage on the Darktide server. Fun game but it has that hopeless feeling for new players. Steep learning curve (which I enjoy) and economy is blown out of proportion for new players.
WoW - 7-day free thing. Logged in last night, updated my addons, killed a few people in TB and battlegrounds, tried queuing for one of the new heroics and crashed upon entry. Couldn't get my character out of the crashed instance for awhile.
I'm game surfing again. Rift account active but I barely log in.

I dont hardly play anything anymore. PC gaming is downright depressing these days. Its like we are being forced to consoles. After the debacle Sony just had....I am thankful I stuck to my "PC Gaming Only" Guns. Got hopes for Skyrim and Diablo III.

I wish I played that game 10 years ago. Even with the highly dated graphics, it is quite fun. I got into a guild called "Reported" or something. I only really know a couple guys in it now. They helped answer a lot of questions. I'm not a fan of the strafe casting thing that is in AC. It is easy enough to do it just kinda looks dumb when everyone (90%+ are mages on dartide) is doing it during a skirmish.
I don't think I'm sticking with it mostly because I don't feel like "buying gold" for an old game and you need a crapton of 'MMDs' as they call them to buy anything. I suppose I could bot for the cash. They let you bot in AC.

I tried going back to AC during one of my WoW-burnout phases but I just couldn't get back into it.
It's a great game though. I would recommend it over the latest crop of WoW-clones any day!

Spare yourself AC...they use a grossly flawed stat system that can make some characters simply unable to recover from "mistakes" you make at level 1...sad
Its also sort of a causual players fighter/magic user/healer healer fest. Kind of feels like Everyone is playing one of 10 shades of grey.
Peopel liekd it beucse at the tiem it was one of the few mainsteam mmorps you could solo well in ....

There are quests where you can reset skill and or specialized skill points, and so many guides to tell you what to train it is unimaginable that a 100+ IQ person could not figure it out.
As far as the "flawed stat system", it's one of the best, most customizable ever created.

AC1's character development was flawed in the way that to increase ANY skill, you had to grind mobs to get XP (or be part of a XP chain). Want to level cooking? Go farm some tuskers. Want to level crafting? Grind more Olthois, my friend.
UO's character development was and still is WAY superior to AC1. At least in UO, pure crafting characters are viable on their own without having to be part of a lame XP chain. You can have a "real" cook, blacksmith, etc... a totally non-fighting character if you want to.
This said, AC1 remains a very good game I played for 6 years and that I still have very fond memories of.
I'm fully aware of its flaws too though. If you ask me if I want UO with modern graphics or AC1 with modern graphics, my choice is made without even thinking twice... give me UO. Would UO have had 3D graphics back then similar to AC1, I would possibly never have played AC1.

Korrigan,
There are "exp turn in items" that have been in the game for quite awhile that you can farm with your "main" and give to your "alt"....
Since all they require is to loot these "bosses" before they respawn, people kill the boss, port alts to the corpse, and effectively mass farm these items.
There is a daily limit (on collection, not turn in)..but the need to be in an exp chain, or farm with your crafter are pretty much gone.

I don't know what AC you played but I remember a social environment like nothing I had ever experienced. A game where friendship was rewarded in a manner that encouraged large groups of people to work together for mutual gain. I'm sorry you saw friendship as a grind, were the Olthoi at least good conversation? Did they teach you any recipes?

I'm not following the train of thought here. Korrigan's complaint seems to be that in order to level a crafting skill, you needed to do non-crafting related activities to level them, not that 'friendship is a grind'.
You couldn't really create 300 pies to gain any points into your Cooking level, for instance. If you wanted a higher Cooking level, your only option was via : killing mobs for xp, vassal passup, or as Gutter mentioned, turn-in trophies from other characters.
For someone who truly wants a crafter only character (and one of my allegiance friends played exactly that kind of character as his main), that would easily be considered a 'flaw' and a valid critique.

Trig, it is extremely easy to make MMDs in AC. Just start picking up everything and salvaging it. Then sell the bags of salvage. I can make like 50 MMDs a night. More if I really try. Especially leather. When your salvage skill is about 150 you get a lot of salvage and it adds up FAST. I subbed again, started a new group of toons and played for 2 months, I had over 2k MMDs and that was with me actually using them now and then to buy stuff.

I've been playing the free 7-day thing they emailed me. I think my server could stand to lose a few subscribers. There are far too many people everywhere (cities, quest areas, etc.). A server split would be perfect.

Boone Hunter's quoted post is an excellent example of baiting (the entire forum). I would think that the original baiter, let's call him the master, has more fault than someone taking the bait.

To be honest, if you give SWG a fresh look with somewhat of a clean slate, I think you would like it. You can set up the UI to play like MMORPG's and not first person (was crucial for me).
I leveled up a character, actually I should check it out also I didn't quite hit max yet. ;p
Was pretty fun, kind of sandboxish, people are pretty nice.

It's hard to get past the graphics and the engine in general of SWG. It was pretty bad for its time, let alone nearly a decade later.

While I spun up AC for another go around I doubt I will be playing more than a month. The idea of grinding (and its a grind regardless of how many "do this quest for X million xp" you do) to get to the new content just does non enthrall me. Getting from one to fifty is pretty much handed to you. Still its the grind to 150 where the game is now and honestly you want 180+
Just not something I am willing to do. When asking people for suggestions far too many come back with Vtank
So I will await GW2. I might poke my head in WOW again once I am eligible for a SoR

well, if you're looking for an MMO and can't decide my suggestion is try out the free to play games.
games like lord of the rings, D&D, runes of magic, requiem, world of tanks
the great thing here is even if they only keep you entertained for a couple weeks or even if you hate it right off the bat yo didn't invest anything other than the time to DL/Install and sign up for an account.
edit: also realise you won't get the same quality as out of a game like WOW but it doesnt mean the games are bad. I enjoyed LOTRO for a litle bit, runes of magic i found fun for a couple months while wow was boring me, requiem lasted maybe 2-3 weeks but i was only playing it with a couple people from my guild who were also playing it(i stopped because they were so far ahead of me and there was more to do in wow so it just didn't last) no they weren't wow but they were fun and they cost me nothing to play them.

-no main healer class......... pvp will be about the fighter and not who is getting healed more. defense will actually matter.
-world event system ..........(no quests)
-an actual charater story line with choices .... (think fable)
