Who else bought this today? Been dying at work all day to read it. Opened it up and got goosebumps at the first page. And to make it better Patrick Rothfuss is in town tomorrow! Going to get him to sign some things for him.

Hey, he is coming here March 10th.

I am tempted to go, though I was just down there Thursday to see Kim Harrison. I really hate driving down to the pretentious hell hole.

My brother had him sign his copy, but I bought the ebook and was busy that night...Half way through now, it's great~ My friend finished it and is upset about the ending because it'll be another 5 years for the next one.

He was very clever and entertaining. You can tell he is very smart and understands his craft. I have never been to a more interesting and fulfilling book signing.

He even told me to drive safely on my way home.

hope we do, book 3 is going to have to be massive like this one was imo. all the crap that will probably happen between kovthe and alveron. but then there's also the stuff at the university, that damn plated door, Varitas!, haliax and cinder to deal with. might not be enough for a char like bredon unless he plays a substantial role later on.

Seriously not sure how he'll wrap up with only one book to go. I thought it was good, but I am surprised he is still in the university considering at end of book one he was talking about being expelled and I would have enjoyed if he used some of his new learned fighting skills more.

yeah I found that weird too. I thought maybe at first when he was being told to leave by Dal and his friends that maybe he'd get kicked out for doing something stupid. But now he's back and raking in some cash as well. Wonder if maybe him and ambrose finally go all out and he gets expelled...

i always suspected Auri was the girl from the first book that was mentioned by simmon and wil to kvothe....the one that was telling people she was going to marry ambrose and just "disappeared"

she has mannerisms of someone who was rich once.... it's a minor mystery but one i hope is cleared up

the next book needs to have a lot of crap in it to tie all this up

who auri is
how he gets the name "kingkiller"
how he discovers the names of the other "rings" he wears
what his greatest desire was that forced him to fight a demon to get and kill an angel to keep
who the chandrian really are and why they need to be protected from the "singers"
how kvothe gets kicked out
who the amyr really are
what this big war is all about and how he started it
why he can't do sympathy anymore
what happens to denna
why his eyes change colors similar to the fey creatures
the four plate door
what's actually in the damned box

there are probably more i don't remember off the top of my head....

i have guesses about most of those...but nevertheless those are things he has to address all in one book...and do it well

A couple of those like, like how he gets the title kingkiller and who the amyr are are pretty obvious as well as having some details slip out or were talked about. The Amyr btw are based heavily on Templars all the way down to the way they were "exterminated" but really not.

considering there is only one king mentioned and he hasn't even been introduced by person into the story yet i'm not sure how the kingkiller one is obvious....

as far as the amyr....once again...nothing is obvious considering the only bits we've been given about them are ancient legends

absurd logic that i knew was being hinted at.....J.K Rowling is as rich as the Queen of England....if someone killed JK Rowling...no one would call that person Queenkiller

Maer /= king

it's far more reasonable to assume it has to do with an actual king...which his arch nemesis' family is in line to become

or less likely a Fae king which has yet to be mentioned...notice Bast is introduced as a prince...which leads one to believe his father is a king

It is mentioned at least twice during the "present day" story line that he killed the king. How is that vague? Granted it's the legends of kvothe and not the related reality yet, but it will be. Also, if I recall correctly, kvothe himself kinda reflects on it in a round about way early on in book one.

i believe denna is involved in a lot of the story...

in the first book kvothe mentions he loved, lost, trusted, and was betrayed or some junk.....i think whatever betrayal that happens will come at from denna...Samson and Delilah style.... perhaps kvothe shares his 'true' name with denna and she gives it to someone else...or possibly her patron my be one of the chandrian...

Your statement was that you wanted something that we already know tied up.  It was a stupid statement, deal with it.

*edit* Let me clarify it for you. We know that he killed the king from several mentions to that fact so far, what we don't know is why and under what circumstances. But your statement was wondering how he got the title kingkiller, which we already know.
A couple of those like, like how he gets the title kingkiller and who the amyr are are pretty obvious as well as having some details slip out or were talked about. The Amyr btw are based heavily on Templars all the way down to the way they were "exterminated" but really not.

considering there is only one king mentioned and he hasn't even been introduced by person into the story yet i'm not sure how the kingkiller one is obvious....

as far as the amyr....once again...nothing is obvious considering the only bits we've been given about them are ancient legends

perhaps someone 'rich as the king of vint' mischief

absurd logic that i knew was being hinted at.....J.K Rowling is as rich as the Queen of England....if someone killed JK Rowling...no one would call that person Queenkiller

Maer /= king

it's far more reasonable to assume it has to do with an actual king...which his arch nemesis' family is in line to become

or less likely a Fae king which has yet to be mentioned...notice Bast is introduced as a prince...which leads one to believe his father is a king
JK Rowling can not grant titles and lands tho...the Maer is a king in everything but title. remember, there's only 1 book. most of it would have to deal with the chandrain/amyr imo and introducing a new king just wouldn't make sense. a lot of time would be wasted on it. also kvothe will eventually realize the trick to the lackless box so I'd speculate that he'd end up back there at some point, especially after being forced out of the university.

you know how he got the title? which king was it? how did he do it? did he actually do it with his own hand or was it accidental? how'd he get close enough to the king to do it? was it poison? was it sympathy? if he did it up close how did he get away?

all those things and more tell us how he got the title kingkiller...not simply "well duh! he killed a king! nothing more needs to be said on the subject! herp derp! i can count to potato!!!111!!!! drooling "

he opens the 4 plate door in the archives and while inside he meets a demon. the beast gives him knowledge of how to open the lackless box. he opens the box, which in turn unleashes some unstoppable menace that kills everyone in severen. it kills the king, which leads to rebellion and finally war with another nation. kvothe is lost in a fight and presumed dead. while on a mission Penthe find him nearly dead and saves him. she greets him, hello. shocked. they try to escape the city by following a backroad out, which end up leading them into the fae. somehow he loses penthe but finds bast. he sells some valuables he made in the fishery for a lot money and open his own inn. he seals his other items in a box of 3 locks, which now he can not even open.

Good lord. Ok, only two kings are mentioned, one is dead, one (the dead one's replacement) is not, the one that is dead is the one he killed. And yes, all it takes is the killing of a king to get the title kingslayer. Again, I'll say we know how he got the title, he killed a king, what we don't know is why or the circumstances.

so once again...i'm asking you....does the 3rd book need to cover this topic? yes or no?

For the third time, it will. For the fourth time, we don't need that coverage to know why he has the title kingkiller.

Icon bet that he kills the son of the guy currently 13th in line for the throne!

I wouldn't be surprised if he killed Ambroses father which made him king and started a war.

i think his Ambrose's father is 10th in line now...i can't remember if it said ambrose was 11th or if his father was....either way he's 10 or 11 now

and it was the very theory i stated above....so i will not bet you tongue

yes he is...but he's in line for the throne...we are working under the premise that more royalty die and ambrose's father becomes king as an already sizable chunk have died off

Its either 11th or 13th, cause Ambrose is said to have bragged he's (his father I mean) just about a dozen deaths away from the throne after a ship wreck.

Despite it being a bit slow in the middle I liked the book, too bad it'll probably be ages before the 3rd one sad

maybe he didn't kill a king.

maybe he only pretended to kill a king so that the king could abandon his kingdom!

i think it becomes pretty clear who Kvothe kills....it's clearly Ambrose...this is alluded to by the nickname "Kingkiller" and his sword being named "Poetkiller" ...one of which ambrose will become no doubt and one of which ambrose thinks he is...

OK, with all the raving here, I just picked up The Name of the Wind at the library. I've skipped most of this thread so I can avoid any spoilers.
