does she die or does kvothe lose her? notw says he had to kill an angel to get what he wanted from the demon so i'm guessing that means her. especially with all the fanfare he gives her and how sad it makes him when she is brought up for a second time in the book.

Im thinking she does die. We dont know for sure but it seems like she will die and his abilities wont be able to save her so he blames himself for it. Only a few more days for the 2nd book....

I was going to wait on this one for at least awhile, but broke down and ordered it around 4am this morning. The instant gratification I got from ordering a book and having it in my possession within seconds made me a bit giddy.

I also picked up Crippled God (finale of the Malazan series) and I am finally going to read Dust of Dreams (the previous book in the series) that I have put off doing for 2 years waiting for the final book to come out. Then I got a bit nuts and got The Black Prism by Brent Weeks and a couple of other books that caught my eye on the way to the confirm your order page. To round out my reading list I'm going to reread Name of the Wind before I tackle WMF because it's been so long since I read it.

Spent the entire morning cleaning up the house (just got back after a few weeks traveling), doing some cooking, and getting things ready for me to be sitting on my butt reading for the next week or two. tongue

oh...and I hope she doesn't die and don't think she does.

I started reading the book around 1AM after putting it off all day.

That was about 10 hours ago and I just came up for air. Didn't sleep a wink last night. I'm on page 650 or something. It's a damn fine book so far. I don't even know why really, it's not the most exciting or most original or the most groundbreaking...... well it is the most perfectly written book I've read in decades however. This Rothfuss guy sure does know how to put a sentence together.

he draws you in so well that you could, essentially, be reading a phone book and you'd think it was the most interesting shit in the world. and you'd likely read it again and wait years for him to release a second phone book.

Yeah, his story is almost like a comic book or a bunch of short stories compiled into a large volume. Most experience he gains from one situation doesn't seem to carry over into others. Its like he's compartmentalized aspects of his life.

but he writes so well that it doesn't really matter.

On denna, she's a total beyotch. Around their age, I was an emotional condom for a few girls, bit they never led me on. Ever. I knew we were friends, many times wishing we were more, and sure, I listened to more than one bitch about her "asshole" boyfriend(s). but I was never taken out for a picnic alone with a girl, half-naked, and expressing my desire for her, only for her to not only reject me but blow up in my face about how I'm just like all the rest and blah blah blah. Seriously, that would piss me off to no end. But oh, poor Denna, abused by men so she can't ever trust one. Boohoo. I hope this guy meets a hot princess and happens upon Denna in the street one day. "Oh, fancy meeting you here, this is Lady Lovely, my fiance who I'm madly in love with. Oh and this is Denna, a dear friend of mine." LL: "teehee, nice to meet you denya, kvothe slew a dragon for me! grin "

I think Brandon Sanderson said it well,(and I¨m paraphrasing) Patrick Rothfuss has mastered the art of telling a simple story well.

Patrick is a meticulous author, there lots of subtle word plays going on in the two books. One thing is that unlikely to be a coincidence is that Denna is similar to Denner resin (both are sickly sweet). I'm 99% sure the Denna story ends really badly, and I suspect her mysterious sponsor is somebody truly unsavory (perhaps one of the Chandrian) and she will be used to get at Kvothe.

I've about had my fill of Denna. After book one I was aghast when I realized she was going to be the lynch pin to Kvothe's undoing but now that I don't like her anymore I am perfectly OK with it.

The only thing that could make her not go terribly wrong is if Rothfuss goes in another direction just because it makes too much sense, but he doesn't seem like the sort of author to pass on something that makes too much sense just for a cheap twist.

Kvothe saying that he was betrayed is a tiny piece of foreshadowing that has been hanging over the entire book. Rothfuss has set it up in a way that a showdown with Denna's patron is a foredrawn conclusion no matter what happens and since we know something has to go horribly wrong Kvothe being undone by a girl is just too poetic to pass up.

What I wonder is if the Denna situation ties in to the king. Is Kvothe somehow tricked in to killing the king? Is the king a chandrian?
