servers running ok during the afternoon, tonight they crashed...
upon reboot all your chars are gone bye bye...
then their boards crash...

Consider that this should have been a production release with a bit of balancing, well, ouch on first impressions; which is sad as the genre really does need a few more options in the market place.

so this beta is basically a "production" test I would suspect (and it was not all that crowded on the server I "had" characters on hehe)

well, fingers crossed its a "tripped over the power cord" event...

No it isn't. They aren't giving the game away for free when it launches. It's a stress test designed to exceed the operational parameters of their hardware. To "Stress" it. This is the first issue they've had that I can remember. I'm not worried.

For all we know this was completely unexpected and they are all freaking out over the issue trying to figure out the best possibly solution before launch.

It is, however, more plausible that they can just limit the amount of people per server and bam the band aid is in affect.

All of my characters seem to be firmly back in place.


At least I didn't spend 10 minutes trying to talk to an NPC who didn't respond. Then discover 2 mins later that the NPCs had all disappeared. And then gotten a warning that the servers were going down in 15 mins to be booted off in less than 5 mins.

Repeatedly.

Didn't really have much of a choice did they? I hope it does well I truly do. I like it when people find something they like and is fun. Sometimes I wish that people could experience the same thing I do, inside, everytime I play WoW. I hope that RIft can become...something that is truly a part of you.

Open beta is a chance to test your release day. If they are having problems, it is good they are working it out.

It is sad what has become of the community that they judge game stability based on open beta. Beta is for testing!!

Of course, I'm guilty of it, since I review betas, hehe.

The thing is, they are trying to crash the servers. In fact, the developers issued a challenge TO crash the servers last beta as it was a stresstest. We tried. We failed.

I remember playing when they issued that 'challenge'. I chuckled when I didn't lag at all for the duration. Even did a Death Invasion and tons of pvp, no lag.

I had a good impression of today's play in Rift. Wasn't down long for me and nothing lost - just made people wonder when the downed servers were showing zero characters and you knew you had some there. Respawns are very fast so despite the crowd I didn't have to wait long to kill even the named quest mobs. It's nothing earth-shattering but I think I'll enjoy it a few months or more.

The latest beta, or all of them, very could have been occurring in test environments assembled for just this purpose each time. Wiping the slate clean was obviously intended - whether due to a new issue they found with a recent build or infrastructure change, who's to say. They probably tinker with things there while their production environment is tested and tweaked given the results.

Besides, whether a beta run occurs a month from release or an hour away, it shouldn't be a surprise to see things get wiped. It's what testing is for.

I played from 8pm to midnight got to level 11 on Wolfsbane without any issues.

Fyi. Bards need rebalancing. I'm currently building a Bard/Marksman/Ranger and the level of kiting stuff around is "AHAHAHAH".

I can take on 5 same level mobs solo and some elites solo as well by just mashing cadence after getting the talent that 100% of damage dealt with it is healed. Whats more stupid good is the channel rate of cadence is almost identical to energy regeneration so I can do it indefinitely. In short... if I can out damage the enemies damage output, I win - no matter what their level and other junk is. I'm tempted to consider respec'ing to Riftblade or something tanky and use it as a rogue tank build.

Later on I hope to tie in some aoe damage or threat gen to toy with it...

When it's 1v1, I open with swift shots, my pet charges it and taunts, I spam ranged combo point generators and hit with ranged finishers.

I can't think of a single class my cadence and coda of restroration out heals 1v1 :P, you have to mix other things in it while keeping all 5 of your motifs up to win. grin

I played for about five hours yesterday with no issues. Mostly ran around doing quests and getting the lay of the land. First impressions are that it seems like a game I wouldn't mind giving a chance.

When I first logged in, I had the choice of three servers that weren't "full". Looks to me like yesterday was a stress test day. Better to get it done now, than later.

What I was happiest about after playing was that I can run the game in Ultra Mode and still get very good framerates, even with my 2+ year old rig.

I do believe this game has potential.

I'm really really curious which elite you've solo'd at or before level 11 and which side, Guardian or Defiant? Was it the level 8 that walks the road? Did you take it at level 11?

Because after rolling at least dozen characters through that level, I'm scratching my head trying to think of any other elite I could solo other than one on alpha and that was long since buffed up (3 beta's ago).

My first impressions of Rift are comparable to those I had of WoW. Polished, stable (not to burst the OPs bubble but this was fixed quickly and things were back to normal), and fun. Needs some tweaking here and there, as all new games do, but the level of involvement and speed of response from the Devs is very encouraging. Is it the famed WoW-Killer? Nope, but it did make the peon cry in my case. /shrug

I'm guessing not.

I've worked in development and been a project manager are large software deployments. I consider Open beta a finished product. Its a stress test. Now, of course Trion fixed it or did they? We won't know until launch day. You do not want a band aid fix on something like that.

That all being said... Trion handled it well. I'm not concerned myself.

Its a little early to let the fanboi frothyness out....
